This book was intriguing from page one and I was hooked straight away. It is a well written, descriptive story with great characters and a unique and fascinating storyline. I really enjoyed it and found it quite hard to put down. Despite being a little drawn out at times the ending was very moving.
Lorelai is lovely, I really liked her and her friend Joanne. They were both full of character, humour and so well written that I could picture their lives in the cinema. The only thing that bugged me with her was all her introspection I got that what she was dealing with was huge...who wouldn't be freaked out by seeing the way someone dies when you kiss them, but I wanted to give a nudge at times to get on with things. I loved Grayson, he was so kind and understanding. I liked his humour and honesty.
I found the second half a little drawn out with Lorelai's procrastination, which I found a little wearing at times. I understood her reasons but just wanted less introspection and more getting on with it. Having said that it's a really clever idea and definitely an original idea, with plenty of romance.
Would you dare to begin your love story if you knew how it was going to end? Lorelai works in a cinema and writes adaptations of her favourite books in her spare time, her dream is to find the courage to pursue it professionally one day but she fears failure. An absolute romantic, unfortunately she carries another secret within her heart. The reason she avoids acting on her emotions, particularly when it comes to her love life...whenever she kisses someone on the lips, she sees how they are going to die. To relive these visions within her nightmares means she has never figured if her kiss is a bad omen or whether the fate of these individuals is a locked destiny, she refuses to risk anyone else's life, even it means subjecting herself to a life without companionship.
Then she meets Grayson. Sweet, clever, funny Grayson. And for the first time in years she yearns for a man’s kiss. But she can’t…or can she? And if she does, should she try to intervene and change what she sees?
I loved Lorelai's character, it was easy to fall in love with how much she loves books and her work at the cinema may not be ideal for everyone but imagine spending some days serving popcorn with your best friend and roommate and sharing the euphoria of audiences/customers arriving to see a classic or a favourite movie sounds nice and it was a cute story for the most part. I think this was better suited to being a Young Adult fiction novel because of the nature of the story. There wasn't as much romance due to the distance created by Lorelai's curse and the bond between Grayson and Lorelai felt almost superficial for that reason and I could not sense the connection between them. In terms of a starred crossed lovers tale, I did not understand Grayson's appeal as there wasn't enough character development on that front either. Lorelai's vision were scary but it was no less than a thriller fantasy for those small parts of the book and so it may have fared better for a younger audience. I definitely enjoyed reading about Lorelai's bond with her Grandmother and loved how that developed within the storyline. I think it was a pleasant read and interesting premise but I was just expecting a bit more depth hence my rating. Thank you @Netgalley and @HQStories for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Enjoyable romance sprinkled with fun and magical moments. Loveable characters. I enjoyed this book as it was slightly different to others in this genre. Nice easy read to cosyup with.
Thank to Netgalley and the publishers HQ for an Arc in exchange for an honest opinion
Ok wow I could not put this book down I loved every word and could relate to the whole do you want to be sweeping popcorn for the rest of your life quote. ( I also work in a cinema)
The story was amazing its, beautifully written and really captivates your attention from beginning to the last word.
This is the first book I have read from Carrie and I going to say I bet it's her best yet. My only complaint was that the book ended I could have read more and would love to see how this story progresses I really fell in love with the characters it was such an interesting concept and so creative and really.
It's a really easy-to-read great book for the summer by the pool and in my top five best books I have read so far this year.
Thanks so much for the early copy now I need to find a book to come after reading this one it's going to be hard to top for a while....
A sweet book with an interesting premise but it felt like it was written for and is more suited to the YA market. Even though the book was based in London the character names suggested something more global or this may have been to represent the magical realism aspect of the book. Enjoyable.
What an interesting concept! A woman who sees death when she kisses someone. As the novel progresses you learn how this has shaped Lorelai’s life and her attitude to love and relationships. I have to admit, these were the weaker parts of the novel because the real charm is in Lorelai’s personality which shines, particularly in scenes with her best friend, Joanie.
The novel is essentially a turning point in Lorelai’s life when she meets the handsome, kind Grayson and begins to fall for him. But a relationship isn’t possible without a kiss and she doesn’t want to see how he will die. I can’t say more than that without ruining the book!
It’s a really charming book that I read in one sitting.
A Whimsical wonder of a five-star read. This was my first read by this author, but it was so weird as they have narrated one of the stories I simply adored, so it was easy hearing her tell me the story again as I read. Lorelie is a complex character that will warm you, she will make you wonder and have you wondering who she really is, and what makes her so special, as she is special like a superhero. In some ways she reminded me of me, just with a kissing thing, she likes to read and loved the movies and aspires to write, I have a great bestie as well. Joanie was a great push to her, and Riggs as well, played his part beautifully. But it was Greyson who gave her the push and that was a kissable situation. I am so excited to sink my teeth into the rest of this authors back catalogue.
I like Carrie and have enjoyed her precious books. I think I liked this one best.
An original idea, with great characters. The story was fun, lighthearted and easy to read.
Really made me think ‘what would it be like to be in her shoes’
Escapism at its best
Loved it
If you could know how and when people would die by kissing them what would you do with that knowledge. And who would you trust enough to tell your awful secret to?
For Lorelai, this was her experience. After her first 2 kisses she vowed never to kiss another man and never experience that pain again. But then she met someone who she wanted to spend time with.
I loved this storyline that kept me hooked from the first page to the end.
The moral of the story - live your life right up to the end!
Carrie Hope Fletcher is a remarkable young woman, I found out after reading this. An actress, musician, writer, social media star and role model for lots of young women. She has written quite a few novels in a short space of time which could mean lack of quality. I am definitely not the target market for this type of novel, being an older woman who likes literary fiction, but I like to ix it up a little and relax with lighter stuff at times. It is romantic fiction with a bit of magic, intended for the YA /chick-lit market (although I know that is an out of date term these days.). I found the writing to be childish and naive, but I did like her characters despite them having silly names - (Lorelai, Lila, Griggs.) and the plot flows well. I thought the premise was a little silly and the way it worked did not stand up to scrutiny. What happens when you kiss your own children? Lorelai is good at running away. Why the long suffering Gregory keeps coming back is a mystery. She does not understand her own character and she needs her extremely devoted friend Joannie to explain her behavior and actions to her. (Which she does, at length.) She has withdrawn from her parents and yet they seem very close. Eventually the truth about Lorelai's weird ability (curse?) comes out and she is able to come to terms with it. A couple of things did not ring true - she has gone through university having sex but with no kissing. hard to believe. And I think that if an airline got a phone call to check an airplane as it might crash, they would get the police descending on the suspecting terrorrist activity. (And she didn't know which plane he was getting on anyway.) As the first reviewer on NetGalley for this novel I apologize for the low rating but I am sure others will like it.
I really loved the premise of this book, the idea that a kiss would let you see how that person was going to die. The execution was a little off for me though. I’m not sure I really believed the love story between Lorelai and Grayson, it all felt a little forced and it set up the relationships between her work colleagues a lot more than the relationship between the two of them. It just fell a little bit flat for me, I think it wanted to be a romance book but spent too much time on Lorelais gift and not enough developing the love story.
Lorelai has a unique gift - ever since her first kiss with Arthur, she can see how whoever she is kissing is going to die. Traumatised by this she has vowed not to let herself fall in love. Until now.
She loves books and film adaptations of said books. Working in a small family owned cinema she decides to set up a monthly book to big screen book club - meeting Grayson in the process. Will she break her own vow?
This book takes us on Lorelai's journey, trying ro figure out just what her ability is and how to control it.
I read this all in one sitting. I thought it was a really interesting premise for a book and a really easy read. At times some of the character interactions felt a bit wooden/forced/cliché - very insta-love and cheesy. It was a bit off putting for me.
All in all I did enjoy reading it but I didn't care too much about the characters to really LOVE it.
I am surprised to read some of the other reviews. I loved this book. I loved the idea that someone could see someone die with a kiss and the turmoil of whether it was ok to change that or not. I loved the character of Joanie who was as supportive as she was firm and I loved that it was a love story with a difference. I could feel the love between Lorelei and her grandmother.
Excellent writing
I thought this was a beautiful love story! A little different to anything I’ve read, but the characters came to life and I really got caught up in the trauma of what it must be like to witness someone’s death. I’d definitely recommend this. Thank you to the author and publisher for this ARC
With This Kiss is the story of Lorelai, a girl who sees the death of whoever she is kissing. It covers her journey of exploration as she tries to figure out exactly how this mystical power works, tempted out of her romantic isolation after meeting her insta-love crush, Grayson. I thought that it was an interesting premise, and it made me think about what such a curse would mean and how it would affect someone mentally. But unfortunately the whole romance just felt so empty to me. Both of our lovers are instantly into the other hardcore, but Lorelai runs away because of this curse that means she can never kiss him. I just wanted her to kiss him and get on with it to be honest. Because everything is so focused on her curse, there's no real character development and I didn't feel like I knew anything about Grayson at all which stopped me really being invested in their relationship. I certainly wanted her to resolve her problem so she could have her happily ever after, but it literally could have been with any man.
I also wasn't sold on the side characters of the book. I don't want to go into any detail because of spoilers, but there are two main side characters of her supportive best friend / room mate (who gets dumped by her girlfriend in a single line and then it's never mentioned again because apparently only Lorelai's love life matters), and her weird coworker Riley who ends up sleeping on her couch and doing some other things that need trigger warnings that I felt was dealt with quite abruptly and almost frivolously.
So three stars from me for what I think was an interesting premise for a love story, and I did enjoy the resolution of the main plot, but as much as I wanted to, I couldn't really get into any of the characters that much.
This is a very different book, and I found it hard to keep up my interest throughout.
kLorelai has a strange gift enabling her to see a death when she kisses someone. Grayson, with whom she is in love , wants more from her than she can give, and she is terrified of seeing his ending.
I didnt relate much to either character, to be honest. The whole book just made me feel sad and dar.k.
Thank you for a review copy of the story.which I appreciate.
An unusual love story but interesting. Lorelai has an unlikely gift when she kisses anyone, so avoids it at all costs. However, when she meets Greyson it is a battle with herself she is likely to lose.
I found her character very frustrating at times and wanted to bang her head on a wall but she gets there eventually.
Didn’t find this a great read, persisted until the end but been honest it was just to finish it and not to see how it ended as it wasn’t great at all..
I sat and read this book yesterday. It was a delight to read, I will purchase it when it comes out as I will read it again and again, beautiful writing captured me from the start. 5 stars thank you for allowing me to review it and I look forward to reading more of your books.
I have loved all Carrie’s books & this was no exception. Highly recommended by me. Thanks for the opportunity to read and review this book.
