This book intrigued me from the moment I read the blurb. The premise is unique and full of promise. I did feel that the story and characters were rather lacking and the overall book wasn't for me which is sad because I was wanting to like it.
I love Carrie Hope Fletchers previous novels and this was no different. A great magical journey and a fast paced read! I loved the premise and connected with the main characters. Definitely recommend!
Not for me I'm afraid. It felt very much like Fletcher went on a bit of a box ticking exercise to make sure that she covered as many woke topics as possibly, most of which were show horned in in a way that felt very forced. The rest of the writing was just as bad - bland and flat and not at all exciting or interesting.
I enjoyed this book although did find the theme a little bit out of my comfort zone. That said, the characters were a joy to get to know and the plot kept me on my toes, wanting to know the outcome. Thank you netgalley
I've read a few of Carrie Hope Fletcher's books before and this one might be my favourite. The plot is straight forward compared to the last one CHF book I read. It feels a little more real even though it is a supernatural type romance.
The setting for this book was fun! We're mainly in a cinema but there were mentions of the theatre and a pub which had a library room. I wish we had spent more time there! I feel as if there could have been a lot of potential there considering CHF's job.
Characters wise, I'm not the biggest fan of Lorelai, not sure why, but Joanie and Grayson! I loved how supportive Joanie is (she's the type of friend everyone needs) and how sweet Grayson is.
This is a very easy, supernatural ish read with an easy to understand plot.
Really loved this story. Such an unusual premise and plot.
Loralai was so well drawn and I loved reading her journey
Beautifully written and sparkling with magic this is a gorgeous tale.
A nice, easy read that was quick to finish. The characters were likeable and the ending satisfying. Thank you for the opportunity to read this novel- 3 stars.
A little very read
A very well written book
A book that you will get lost in
It really captures you and you won’t want it to end
Thanks NetGalley
This was such a gorgeous romance from the very talented Carrie Hope Fletcher. I enjoyed it immensely and feel so privileged to have been able to review it.. I will have a much more detailed review to come unfortunately due to some health issues I can’t type a lot at the moment, but it truly was a gorgeous book and I hope the first of many I get to read/review. I loved the premise, characters, and how the storyline played out.
As an avid fan of Carrie Hope Fletcher as a performer, I was excited to read this book. The premise is original and intriguing.
Lorelai (beautiful name) realises that when she kisses someone she has a premonition of their death and a result hasn't kissed anyone since she was 18 yrs.
I was rooting for a happy ever after for Grayson and Lorelai. There was lovely writing, but while I enjoyed the read, it just didn't have that magical spark that the beautiful cover promised.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I really wanted to like this book, but I’m afraid I didn’t. The writing is very simple, and although it was a very strong initial plot idea, the rest of the story is severely lacking.
Lorelai is your average kind of girl, with a less than average size secret, when she kisses someone; she sees how they’re going to die. Having avoided kissing someone since she was 16, she’s managed to carve out a life that makes her happy. Then she meets Grayson, a sweet and handsome man, and she realises that maybe she’s been missing out all along.
The main character is over dramatic and whiney, and if she actually just bothered to communicate with people, she would have no issues. She repeatedly refers to herself as a monster, and it’s honestly ridiculous. The thing that makes her ‘monstrous’ is not as dramatic as she makes out. The whole thing is blown way out of proportion and takes the idea of a hyperbole to a whole other level. It was honestly laughable. Slightly awkward events were overblow and embellished as if it was the end of the world, and it just made everything seem too far-fetched. Plot points were exaggerated to create interest, but it made it farcical and not believable; and the characters seem almost moronic.
I don’t think the main couple had any chemistry, and we didn’t see much develop between them so I just couldn’t get on board with all their drama.
There were a couple of things thrown in, which I felt was to tick a box, so they came across hollow and insincere. Also, who calls it ‘salty’ popcorn? It’s clearly salted.
Sorry, it was just such a letdown for me. No character development, a weak plot and overly simple writing. I wouldn’t recommend.
I absolutely LOVED this story so much from beginning to end. Carrie always seems to tap into the unknown and I really love that. What a gift Loralai has but what a burden it must bring. Loved reading the story as it unfolded and highly recommend.
I really enjoyed this. The main characters- particularly Lorelai were all so well written. A great story - something a bit different but really well written. Absolutely recommended.
A really my nice easy read and beautifully written. A story of how life would be if you saw your life flash before you and see how people died. A really interesting read yet emotional at times. Would definitely recommend
Sadly, a book where the introduction of a trans character is juxtaposed with the mention of Harry Potter within five pages is not the book for me. I DNFd at this point.
Oh, I loved this book. A family secret, a secret power….it can be the worst or maybe the best thing that could ever have happened to Lorelai.
How can she allow herself to fall in love and open her heart when it might mean breaking it?
With This Kiss is such a sweet book. Lorelai is adorable, she has a gift to see things when she kisses someone and so far, it has been an absolute curse but now, she has a chance to find out if it can also be a blessing….
For her, a kiss is not just a kiss. A really nice book, loved it
A sweet, love story but ultimately not memorable. The premise was great and got me excited- Lorelai sees the death of every person she kisses on the lips. There were so many creative ways to explore this theme but frustratingly the author avoided all complexity which kept the story quite one-dimensional.
I was hoping for a taste of fantasy, an attempt to explain the "gift" and where it came from, and what else it was capable of. Instead the story focused on romance, and all explanations were avoided with a "We don't know why".
As a fantasy, this was a lost opportunity and frankly quite disappointing. As a romance, it was sweet and mildly entertaining, with characters that had personality but no depth. So much heart and soul goes into writing a book so I always feel bad giving a low rating, but I expected more.
I think Carrie Hope Fletcher must be what comes after a triple threat. Not just a West End star but author too. A good one at that.
It's aimed at a fairly young reader so what to me, seems needlessly repetitive is probably tuned exactly to her audience and is very well written.
On the basis of a trouble shared … Loreli makes things worse for herself by guarding her secret, an unwanted power she has that wreaks havoc on her love life.
It's fresh, different and has quite a sensible theme throughout.
CHF never disappoints with her work, and her books are always an instant buy for me. This was no exception. It left me feeling happy, loved and all round giddy! I can’t wait to purchase this for my mum for her birthday
Carrie Hope Fletcher’s novels have been on my TBR for years but With This Kiss is the first I’ve actually read. I found this novel utterly addictive, as soon as I started it I couldn’t bear to put it down and within a few hours I’d read the whole thing. I am now determined to read Carrie’s entire back catalogue of books before the year is out. Carrie’s passion and love of books and theatre really shines through within this story and it’s beautiful to see how her interests inspire the story.
I often ponder about death, there are endless questions I could ask. And although I find books about grief too emotional to read, a book about knowing how people die fascinated me, particularly as it wasn’t by touch of a hand but by a kiss on the lips which made the occurrence less likely to happen by chance. The main character, Lorelai, in most instances, would have the opportunity to consider whether she wished to know how someone would die or not and so whether she would kiss them. When this novels begins, she has sworn off dating in an attempt to never experience the traumatic visuals of someone dying by kissing them, and then Grayson walks into her life.
Carrie Hope Fletcher has mentioned Pushing Daisies as inspiration for this novel and it definitely reminded me of my love for it. Lorelai asks herself many questions throughout the story regarding her particular gift, and because of this she slowly begins to build self-confidence and self-belief and choose her own path. The friendship between Lorelai and Joanie was wonderful and really emphasised the strength of a good friendship when there are no secrets between you and you can depend on each other no matter what.
This isn’t a romance read, it’s more of a novel that will lead to your own inner questions and deep thinking. The story doesn’t dive into Lorelai’s gift into as much depth as I would have liked, but I did appreciate the flashbacks to Lorelai’s various kisses that showed her gift in action. If you enjoyed the show Pushing Daisies or the novel They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera this is definitely a novel to consider adding to your TBR. I will be exploring the author’s previously published novels for sure.
