Where have I been? Bigger Than Us by Fearne Cotton was an amazing book and a very interesting read I loved it.
Especially as I will be reading further books from Fearne. This book was written from the heart and she spoke with experience and she helps understand anxiety, self-limiting beliefs in a relatable, non-preachy way.
I can’t say that I particularly enjoyed this, it was ok, but not as good as her other books by any stretch.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
I like the way Fearne Cotton approaches the reality of dealing with the stresses of our lives and how she has developed ways to do this and putting her thoughts and ideas out there to share and support all others. however, this was maybe a little too far in that the spirituality of it was just beyond what I am willing / capable of adapting. It was interesting in a way of understanding but as it wasn't really my thing I couldnt really make the most of what it could offer
We’ll written and lovely to hear Fearne's voice so clearly, but didn’t really get that interested in the core subject of the book, Obviously a major event for the author and her passion comes through in the writing.
Over recent years, Fearne Cotton has refocussed her career and life to spend more time looking at connection rather than living a life of celebrity glitz and glamour. This book is the result of Fearne exploring the more spiritual things - those things that are "bigger than us".
I approached with this book with some trepidation and scepticism. I like Fearne and often listen to her podcast (Happy Place), but I'm not a spiritual person. However, I needn't have feared. Fearne, with her usual kindness and sensitivity, takes the reader through various ideas, conversations and experiences to try and open up a wider realm to people. But this is no hard sell and Fearne clearly knows that some of the things she talks about might be too "woo woo" for some.
This book didn't persuade me of anything, but it wasn't really written for that purpose. However, it did give me insight into why some people find astrology, prayer and shamans (amongst other things) meaningful and I hope has given me more empathy for people who have a more spiritual approach to life.
A lovely book I dipped into each night at bedtime for a week or so, about intuition, connection and “finding meaning in a messy world”. Some really beautiful reminders to trust the Universe a bit more and to stay open rather than close down when life gets tricky. One to bookmark and return to again, for sure. Fearne rocks!
With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC.
I was so excited to be granted the ARC of this book. Having followed Fearne online and on screen for many years I was yet to read one of her books.
The topics she covers include Reiki, Shamanism and meditation and the book is a combination of her own experiences and interviews with experts. I didn’t enjoy the interview transcripts unfortunately as it didn’t read as well as it would on the podcasts.
Some very interesting topics covered in the book and I’m sure people will enjoy Fearne’s insights.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
I genuinely couldn't get on with this book. I usually really like Fearnes writing but I found this waffly and too airy fairy.
I have enjoyed fearne cottons other books, so I was looking forward to this. I really enjoyed it, and encourage everyone to read it
As a fellow anxiety sufferer I was excited to get my hands on ferns book. I loved it and so many things resonated with me. I definitely recommend this book not just to anxiety sufferers but to family and carers too!
I have read all of Fearne Cotton's books and they are all brilliant.
This did not disappoint. Speaking with spirituality and thought leaders, she helps understand anxiety, self-limiting beliefs in a relatable, non-preachy way.
This is the first book I have read by Fearne and it is one that you can take things from and others leave behind. I thoroughly enjoyed it as a read and it has meant that from it I have looked and ordered other books that she recommends.
I will certainly be reading further books from Fearne and exploring more of the areas that she writes about in this book.
I want to start by saying that I love Ferne Cotton and have found her other books really enlightening and helpful but unfortunately this one just wasn’t for me and didn’t get past the first few chapters.
I love Fearne Cotton's podcast Happy Place and was looking forward to her deeper reflections on spiritual and energy healing in Bigger Than Us. The topics she covers include Reiki, Shamanism and meditation and the book is a combination of her own experiences and transcribed interviews with experts and practitioners. Unfortunately the interviews did not work for me in this format. Fearne is a great interviewer on her podcast but I would rather listen to than read these sections. Also as someone who has a huge interest in many of the modalities covered in the book, I did not find it particularly helpful as a self help book or information guide to various healing therapies. The book sadly didn't flow for me although others may appreciate the style and layout.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
On a beautiful book exploring spirituality, connection and meaning in our messy world. I picked up Fearne Cotton’s ‘Speak Your Truth’ around this time last year, which I thoroughly loved for its life-affirming messages, so I got excited when I found out about ‘Bigger Than Us’. This book feels like her own personal project, and Elizabeth Day referred to it as Cotton’s magnum opus’. I have to agree.
The book is divided into the three lessons we can all learn, i.e. love, awareness and communication. Cotton uses her personal stories and discussions with experts to go through things like meditation and yoga, energy, enneagrams, prayer, rituals etc. Yes, you can see what the sceptics would think, but even the most sceptic side of me couldn't help but read through the entire book. I love her honesty and how inspiring her work is.
“I most definitely want a life with meaning. One where I can examine my own mistakes and see the point of them. One where I can break apart pain to see the wisdom inside. One where I can see pure beauty and bliss in the simple, everyday stuff. One where I know I’m nurturing my soul as well as my mind and body. For that I need to put my attention on all that is bigger than me – that beautiful, mystical, at times inexplicable something that is bigger. So big that our minds cannot compute its size. So big that its abundance isn’t always obvious to us. So big that it doesn’t need to shout or scare us, even when we forget to feel humble and give it respect. So big that we take it for granted and miss the everyday magic happening all around. So big yet also within our human body. The love, energy and abundance of it all, outside of us and within. It doesn’t matter what lexicon we adhere to, meaning and connection are available to us all.”
Read it, be open-minded, and who knows. You may get so much of it.
**Listened to the audio book, and read along to electronic copy**
I bloody love Fearne Cotton, and this definitely one of the books I was most looking forward to reading in 2022. I had preordered the audio book as soon as I was able. I was excited to read a book about all of my favourite things, and all things spirituality. I was excited to learn more!
This book covered a great deal, but unfortunately it didn't go into much detail - this left me a little disappointed. Cotton had interviewed some of her favourite practitioners in each field - but these were people she has previously had on her 'Happy Place' podcast, so I felt a bit short changed. I listen to the podcast, and love the podcast but I wasn't expecting half of this book to almost be a transcript of the podcast.
Overall I liked the book, and liked the content, but I was just left wanting more! I wanted Fearne Cotton to delve deeper. I liked the way she incorporated her own personal experiences, but I just wish the book had more pages and could have told us more about each of the different methods.
It was OK, I enjoyed it, but wanted more - so couldn't give this a higher star rating.
In a modern world full of stress, anxiety and the pressure to constantly be doing more, this book is essential reading.
Featuring interviews covering topics such as meditation, prayer, ritual, the enneagram and more, Fearne embarks on a journey to find peace, calm and connection. I indentified with her search for peace and contentment and empathised with her mental health struggles. Her passion for the subjects covered is evident and I loved her enthusiasm and open mindedness.
Even now, a couple of days after I finished reading, I'm still thinking about several of the topics and discussions. It's a book I know I'll definitely go back to when I'm feeling lost or need to destress.
Enlightening, thought provoking, comforting and soothing - Better Than Us is an essential read!
Thanks to Net Galley. Ebury Publishing and Penguin Random House for the ARC.
I’ve read all of Fearne Cotton’s books and I think that this is probably my favourite. The book is presented in an easy to read style while introducing us to things that are, truly, Bigger Than Us…… spirituality, faith, reiki, shamanism, mediumship, manifesting, and Enneagram numbers among other. I found the book enlightening, thought provoking and beautiful. Fearne has inspired me to live my life in a more thankful way, looking for the positives in life and focusing on love. I have always been drawn to alternate ways, but feel inspired to live a more spiritual, non religious, way.
It is refreshing to read that someone in the public eye suffers from the same self doubt and negativity that I have suffered from all of my life, however, from this day on, I vow to change my thinking and work towards a more peaceful life. Thank you Fearne for writing such an inspirational book. Right, I’m off to find out my Enneagram number! Highly recommended.
Bigger Than Us by Fearne Cotton is a mix of her personal experiences and interviews with various experts on subjects such as meditation, energy, astrology, prayer, signs, connection.
