This book has been a great listening experience. Thanks to the author and the publisher for bringing this book to life.
I really enjoyed the book and the narrator was good as well. I did speed up the reading to 1.5, but that is pretty normal for me. The stories were diverse with numerous examples of animals that have rescued people and/ or other animals with some possible theories on animal empathy put forth. It was heartwarming and made me think.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for my review! This is a short audiobook at 3.5 hours and was the perfect companion for a day of household chores. These heartwarming and amazing stories are inspirational acts of kindness that many humans should take note of. The stories are well-researched and varied with many different animals. I enjoyed the narration as well. TW: Suicide.

A captivating exploration of empathy in the animal kingdom!
In her incredible book, When Animals Rescue, Belinda Recio takes readers on a journey around the world, delving into the remarkable and heartwarming stories of animals defying previous scientific knowledge to save another species in need. With a keen focus on animal empathy, Belinda Recio presents a compelling case for an ongoing debate within the scientific community.
When Animals Rescue showcases a collection of real-life accounts that will leave readers amazed by the intelligence, compassion, and inherent nature of these magnificent creatures! From seals saving humans from drowning, a crow adopting an abandoned kitten, to gorillas dismantling poacher snares, the stories within this book will blow your mind!
Belinda Recio’s skillful storytelling and Hayden Panettiere’s excellent narration bring these accounts to life. What sets When Animals Rescue apart, though, is its ability to appeal to a wide range of readers, young and old. Whether you’re a biologist seeing to understand the intricacies of animal behavior or simply an animal lover with a fascination for extraordinary stories, this book is a must-read!

When Animals Rescue is a fascinating book with a bunch of amazing stories to discover about animals rescuing humans or other creatures. There were some stories that I've seen or heard about. Really, it is a great book to read or listen to for those who love animals and knew how wonderful beings they are. I had such a nice time while listening to the audiobook.
This was such a fun and adventurous listen. I loved this book and listened to it in little chunks of time but kept coming back. I fit it into my busy schedule to listen to a few stories and then was back for more. The book is filled with stories of animals partnering and rescuing humans, both owners and strangers in the wild. It was whimsical and happy and filled with adventure. I loved listening to it but I also listened with my kids and a family friendly listen is always a win.
This is a wonderful book about the power of animals, and how they sometimes go out of their way to rescue humans, birds and other animals. It is a really amazing book, which shows just how caring and compassionate animals can be, and how intelligent and sensitive they are.
In the book, there is a lovely narrator, who has a beautiful, calming voice, which I loved to listen to. She tells us stories about different animals who have rescued others, and listening to these stories was uplifting, heartwarming and inspiring to me. I just love animals so much, and to hear how they have helped others, is just amazing and it fills me with awe at these awesome creatures we are blessed with on our plant.
I highly recommend this book, which is suitable for children and adults. It should be in all schools, and shown to all children and young adults, so that they can better understand these beautiful creatures.
Many thanks to the author, narrator, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
I chose to listen to two of the author's books close to each other. This basically brought down some of the excitement since the 'feel' of the stories are similar even if the content is not.
Although the narration was brilliant, I think I missed out on the pictures that would be accompanying the print version. If you purchase the audiobook, however, there is a way to access the photos, which is something for people considering this to note.
The cover and tagline say everything that I possibly could about what this book is all about. The foreword is touching, and the author's notes provide perspective. The sheer admiration the author has for collecting this data is evident. It is one thing to watch bite-sized videos on a loop on Instagram or elsewhere about the delightful doings of animals; the scale of this collection is a lot larger. I especially appreciated the way the chapters are divided. It helped keep my attention when I listened continuously.
It is not heavily science-based, and the whys of the anecdotes are not investigated to a deeper extent. The author provides only exactly what she promises: lots of stories of animals who behave the way we as puny, simple-minded humans would never consider them to!
I highly recommend this to lovers of the genre and those looking for a non-fiction audiobook that one can dip in and out of.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own listening experience.
Stories like these are brimming with emotion. Humbling, joyful, hopeful. heartwarming, jaw-on-the-floor, perspective-giving emotion. And when voiced by the incomparable Hayden Panettiere, the listener is fully immersed in goodness.
When Animals Rescue explores a wide range of altruistic species who help each other, help humans, and live lives bigger than themselves. Turns out, this world is a kinder, more empathetic place than it lets on.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing a copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
This book is for every animal lover! And it will work for kids too!
This is a collection of real-life stories that show how animals can show compassion, kindness, and dare I say love??? And this is not just to their own species, but other species that they may not normally ‘cooperate’ with/ live with. And yes, this includes their actions to us humans, who may or may not show compassion back to the animals.
This book shows how smart animals truly are. Those of us with house pets already know this, but you might think differently about the opossum or even hippopotamus! That is until you read this book!
The stories range from the expected with dealing with dolphins, whales, cats and dogs to the unexpected as I just mentioned and more including bears, parrots, and crows. The chapters are short and work for quick trips in the car or for an extended drive. The chapters are easy to understand for all readers and this book is age appropriate for young children who I imagine would love the stories even more so than the adult animal lover. The narrator is Hayden Panettiere and she does a good job in her narration.
This book does leave you thinking about the extent to the intelligence and more of animals and where we humans as animals would fit on the scales of all emotions and feelings.
Many thanks to the publisher who sent me an e-audiobook version to listen to via NetGalley.
This was an epic read. It was so amazing and interesting that I was hooked right from the start. Just the way it was written was so amazing. I listened to the audiobook and loved the narrator. Such a wonderful sense of atmosphere and tension was created by the author and narrator that I had such a range of emotions while reading it. I just thought the author writing style was just spectacular. There is just so much warmth and compassion in her books. I definitely felt so good while reading this book. I just couldn't believe how much real evidence there was out there of animals helping keep humans safe and help other animals out. These amazing stories had me in awe. The way each story seamlessly flowed into the next was just perfect. I really can't recommend this book enough. I thoroughly enjoyed every second and I will definitely be looking out for more titles by this author.
The highest praise goes out to the author and publishing team for creating such a wonderful and very interesting stories that I have no doubt in my mind others will enjoy just as much as I did. Please write more of these books.

This book was FABULOUS. The stories, some well known...some not so, were heartwarming and engrossing. It was just an all over feel good book that should remind humans that we are closer to our "animal" counterparts that we think we are.
I reviewed the audiobook. Hayden Pantierre did a fantastic job doing narration with the soothing voice that these stories that this book demanded.
If I had one criticism, as a former rattie mama and lover, it would be as to how the author could not feature the rats from APOPO Herorats? These ratties do AMAZING things on a daily basis and truly show how dynamic rats are and their capabilities in making the world a better place.
Reviewed for publisher via Netgalley.
Yes - read it or in this case listen!!
I listened to this in the March 2022. I wanted something positive to focus on with the world in such turmoil. It certainly didn't disappoint. Being able to focus on the positive was a much needed break.
The book is thought provoking to say the least. Examining the compelling arguments for the all too human reasons why animals rescue, made me wonder about greater things for humanity and our treatment of animals.
Wonderful book. Gave me some hope and something to look forward to the future to see how mankind continues on our journey with our animal brethren.
I didn't think the narrator added anything to the book but she certainly didn't take anything away. I would honestly recommend the book because it's easier to look up the information being referred to online if you are curious about a particular animal or story. I believe I heard a reference to pictures are well. However, it's a good book for commutes since each story isn't very long.
I received an ARC audiobook from Netgalley to help prepare for my honest review.
This book was incredibly interesting. As both an animal lover and a scientist, I was positively chuffed to learn about animal altruism and their capacity for morality. I am currently taking a course on bioethics and we often talk about morality and the capacity for rational thought as being a human qualities, but Recio provides strong evidence to challenge that argument. How else can we explain a hippo saving a juvenile from another species? Sometimes, I felt the definitions were a bit redundant, but that may be due to my educational background. Overall, this book was a treat–especially with Hayden Panettiere narrating.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an advanced audio copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
This title was just supremely 'meh' for me. There wasn't inherently anything *wrong* with it... it just wasn't for me. I thought this was going to be a book that included a few stories about animals who saved humans and then would focus a lot on the biology and psychology from animal research. Overall, this was just an amalgamation of stories about animals doing nice things. Some of them had to do with animals rescuing humans, but a lot of them weren't. I'm sorry, but I don't care about rats saving other rats. And that's not what I thought this book was going to be about.
I'm also a bit confused because this title seems like it is meant for an adult audience, but a lot of the way it was written was relatively juvenile. Who is this book for? I'm not sure.
Hayden Panetierre was *fine* as the narrator. Nothing special; nothing horrible. Her narration was really slow though. I did have to speed up the title significantly because she narrates much more slowly than most other audiobook narrators.
A fascinating collection of animal stories. Some tales had me smiling, others had me laughing, and even others crying or in shock. The whole gamut of emotions is contained in this book. There are horses and pigs, cats and dogs, whales and dolphins... So many amazing stories! Definitely recommend.
Audiobook listeners: Hayden Panettiere does an excellent job narrating. Would listen to more from her.
Recommended for: Adults & Teens
Suitable for: Ages 12 and up (Contains some mentions of the midwifery skills of some creatures assisting in animals births.)
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Really enjoyed this book! Very fun stories, and the narration was excellent. Definitely recommended.
This is a fun audiobook. It would be great for a family road trip. The stories appeal to all ages and every member would find something to relate to.
This audiobook was okay, but I think it would have been better with a little more research. I'd already heard almost all of these stories before in various news outlets, so it would have been more enjoyable to hear something new.
I thought this was such a sweet book! I love hearing stories of how animals are so thoughtful and caring. The narrator was awesome. I teared up many times at how it must have been to see animals behaving in these ways (particularly the domesticated animal stories).
