The book is a collection of animal stories showing empathy and altruism with human encounters. The book covers a variety animals, including usual suspects (whales, dogs, dolphins, elephants) and unusual suspects (birds, cats, pigs). It is a short and easy to understand tales which would be great to read for children, but not just for kids - I felt stories very uplifting and comforting. I am going through a touch part of my life and dark mood surrounds me sometimes, and these stories cheered me up. If you are an animal lover, you probably won't discover anything new reading this book - all familiar and lovely connection with animals which gets forgotten in our busy daily life. Lastly, the narrator has a lovely and soothing voice. I enjoyed this book like a warm afternoon tea.
**Update: I subsequently listened to her previous book, Inside Animal Hearts and Minds published in 2017, which has the similar vein and found it more interesting, as it includes more topics such as intelligence and humor. Having listen to that, I feel the author could have written more interesting book deepening the subjects, rather than reciting some of the same episodes (coco, for example). I personally would recommend Inside Animal Hearts and Minds over this book personally, although both are enjoyable for animal lovers.
A heartwarming account of instances of animal altruism. Given how rough the 2020-2022 time period has been, this collection of examples of cross-species assistance gives me warm fuzzies. This second book of Belinda Recio is just as fascinating and informative as her first book 'Inside Animal Hearts and Minds'. Stories of altruistic behaviors across species include birds, canines, elephants, porpoises, and primates, An informative feel-good listen.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. I was enthralled with some of the stories of how animals rescued or helped humans as well as other animals. the fact that some of the animals are normally predictors of the ones being saved or protected made it even more astonishing. Each chapter covers a particular animal (dog, rat, whale, gorilla, etc.). And then there are multiple stories within each chapter. I continued saying, “Wow!” throughout the book. Amazing stories that I think most anyone would enjoy learning about.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sky Horse for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
“When Animals Rescue” is the perfect audiobook to curl up with before you go to sleep and Hayden Panettiere is a wonderful narrator. Journalist, art curator, educator and nature writer, Belinda Recio’s collection of true stories will soothe you with their depths of animal empathy, compassion, altruism, and other emotions we associate with our highest human virtues. Here are verified stories from scientific literature, news reports, YouTube videos and TED talks of astonishing deeds by animals, sometimes across species boundaries. “When Animals Rescue” is much-needed in a world where far too much violence is directed towards countless animals, wild and domesticated. What many of us can take from Recio’s work is a change in perspective and behaviour to make the world a kinder place for animals – and ourselves. After listening to the audiobook, I fell asleep feeling humbled, awed and a little hopeful that one day, somehow, we might make significant progress towards healing this beautiful but deeply scarred planet.
Interesting stories and very informative. Enjoyed listening to this. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook
A terrific audiobook about how animals help others out of concern for others. The stories are lovely and worth listen to. The narrator is soothing to listen to and makes the story easy to listen to. Bye the way as a pet sitter I already know that animal being care about others and wonder what those who don't believe are afraid of. n
The audiobook can be listen to in a couple of days and can be listen to anytime you want stories that will make you feel good.
I want to thank BooksGoSocial Audio and NetGalley for this wonderful audiobook.
This is a wonderful book full of heartwarming stories about a wide variety of animals and their apparent ability to have and show empathy for humans and other animals. Most of these stories were hopeful and inspirational but there is a section at the end that discusses potentially harmful experiments on rodents that didn't seem to be necessary and was the reason I give this four stars instead of five.
The narration by Hayden Panettiere was excellent. She added a lot of heart to already heartwarming and interesting stories.
Audiobook provided for free by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
When Animals Rescue, by Belinda Recio, truly is full of amazing true tales about heroic and helpful animals. These stories of animal empathy and altruism encourages us to reflect on our own capacity for empathy. While this isn't my usual genre, I genuinely enjoyed learning about the study of animal kindness. So, I had a bit of a hard time putting it down. Luckily, it's not terribly long.
I received the audiobook version and Hayden Panettiere did an excellent job keeping me engaged and interested. I never realized what a sweet, engaging voice she has until I listened to this book. Warning: A Collection of True Tales of Animal Empathy and Altruism might change how you see animals and how they impact the world around us. I already knew that animals are capable of caring about others but now scientists are proving it.
This wonderful book is full of examples such as: humpback whales protecting a biologist from a shark, a pride of lions rescuing a girl from kidnappers, gorillas working together to dismantle poacher snares, a parrot warding off an attacker in a park, a chimpanzee consoling a human, and an elephant trying to rescue a baby rhino and many, many more.
Thank you NetGalley for a free audiobook copy in exchange for an honest review! This book was a very uplifting listen. I've listened to a few chapters with my toddler and he had a great time as well. The length of each story makes this possible and the chapters being divided by animal really caught his interest. Beyond that it's a lovely collection of animals being heroes, even when science sometimes wants to brush the behaviors off. The narrator has a very sweet voice that works well with the topic. My only complaint is that the sweetness combined with the structure of the book makes a better listen in small doses otherwise the stories started to blur together.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing this eaudiobook in exchange for a review. I personally have always thought that animals had altruistic tendencies. This book does a great job of collecting both the stories and research on this subject. I appreciated how many different types of animals were discussed.

I enjoyed this, there's a lot of heart warming stories in this book. If you're looking for something wholesome to read I would highly recommend.
When animals rescue - Belinda Recio
Amazing! Another brilliant listen. These stories would be great for a young family to listen to together.
In some cases animals have more empathy than humans. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love hearing stories like this. This is why it annoys me so much when people say animals are dumb, they're so not. Listen to these amazing stories about empathic animals and let them change your mind
So many great stories of animals showing empathy! This book was well written and well narrated. The information was well presented and really makes the listener take a look at their thoughts and opinions about animals.
This was such a lovekly book to listen too, filled with stories that are heartwarming and awe inspiring. I took these animals to my heart, what wonderful creatures. A really inspiring and uplifting listen. The narrator was also a great choice, it was very clear and well read.
The book relates stories of animals displaying behavior that is commonly perceived as human-like. These stories are inspiring and fascinating.
Although the author states (and the writer of the foreword insists) that common ancestors and evolution lead to animals and humans simultaneously developing these traits, it seems much more logical to me that God imbued these nurturing and compassionate qualities into many of His creations from the beginning.
Ms. Panettiere does a great job narrating.
Animals show compassion, and yet there are scientists who still don't believe these stories as animals showing compassion, but responses explained away by other scientific data. This book breaks down the animal stories into different categories listed here, whale, parrot, gorilla, dog, lion, monkey, dolphin, cat, pig, bear, horse, seal and sea lion, orangutan, elephant, hippopotamus, chimpanzee and bonobo, crow, rat and mouse. Each chapter is then broken down further by different stories that highlight the compassion, nurturing skills, rescues, alerts used to get attention, intelligence, reading human emotions, and even helping out and showing kindness to interspecies of animals, just to name some of the stories without really giving away specific details or spoilers. Excellent book highlighting why we just appreciate animals, domesticated and wild.
*I received a copy of this book from Netgalley. This review is my own opinion*
This is the second book I've read/ listened to by this author and it didn't disappoint.
Where the first book covered animals thinking, intelligence, emotions etc. This one demonstrates how animals use this to help others.
There are various stories of dolphins or whales saving marine biologists or surfers from shark attacks or of the crow who befriended and helped a kitten.
These stories demonstrate that what most humans think of animals, that they are cute but keep to themselves/ aren't very smart, is wrong.
This book is a light-hearted interesting read and I definitely look forward to more of these books from the author.
Thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for a copy of this audiobook.
When Animals Rescue is an audiobook about animal behavior by Belinda Recio.
It contains some many wonderful stories from the animal world, where different animals, not just other animals but humans as well. It includes a whole range of animals that are capable of such behavior, like Bears, Whales, Lions, Dolphins, Pigs, Cats and so so many more.
Some of these stories were truly heart warming and extrodinary. You wouldn't believe how some of these animals saved people, and if they hadn't have been there the people would of died and not been there to tell the tale.
This is perfect to all who like animals like myself. As a the human race we tend to underestimate animal intelligence, but this certainly corrects this misconception.
Humans tend to underestimate the intelligence of other animals, but this book aims to change your thinking.
From a cat waking its owner to prevent death by carbon monoxide poisoning, to a monkey helping another to give birth, to dolphins surrounding a diver to prevent a shark attacking them, this book is full of stories of animals who have helped humans or other animals. The chapters focus on different animals: Dolphins, Pigs, Cats, Lions, Bears, Dogs, Horses, Elephants etc and tell stories of how those animals have shown empathy, or kindness or intelligence. I was particularly struck by the gorillas who worked together to dismantle snares left by poachers, but so many of the stories were surprising.
The last chapter does touch on animal experimentation & study data relating to rats & mice, which some people might not enjoy after the heartwarming stories that precede it.
I listened to the audiobook with Hayden Panettiere as the narrator. The narration was well paced and bar the odd word that jarred (likely my British vs the US pronunciation!) I felt that her voice suited the stories.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this and recommend it as an uplifting, heart-warming book that will help you see so many animals in a new light.
