Sadly, this isn’t for me. I did read it through but by the end I was skim reading. I expected quirky based on the title alone but this just wasn’t my kind of manga.
Overall, it's a good read that plays with the isekai genre. The main character's virus abilities can be applied in a lot of different ways throughout the story as it continues, and will definitely spark some discussion amongst readers. The MC is introduced as being somewhat self-serving and even fantasizes about controlling the world, but by the end of the manga, they seem to imply his character is being redeemed-- which makes for a much more interesting story in my opinion. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.
An action packed, fast-paced and humorous manga with an interesting premise. A 30-year-old scientist gets reincarnated into another world as a virus. He keeps building up abilities as the virus multiplies, switching from the body of a rat, a wolf, a goblin and then a hobgoblin. If you like isekai manga (reincarnated into another world) or play RPG games, then this manga is for you. It’s not really for me since I prefer character based stories, but I will definitely recommend to teens in the library.
'It's That Reincarnated-as-a-Virus Story, Volume 1' by Kalaku Yuki and Pirota is a manga about life as a virus.
A virus researcher dies and gets reincarnated as a virus. When he infects a mouse, he discovers he gains the ability to control the mouse, plus other skills the mouse has like fear and evasion. As the virus moves to bigger and bigger creatures and learns more skills, he finds out he isn't on his planet anymore and can inhabit beings like goblins and trolls.
The timing of this manga is either really bad or not bad at all depending on how you feel about current events. The story was actually written in 2018, and is actually really clever.
I received a review copy of this manga from Kodansha and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.
Cute and slightly different take on the Isekai genre. The setting and the gimmick of being a virus is more than enough to make up for the main character being a bit dull.
This manga’s title and synopsis intrigued me. I’m glad I requested it because it’s a really interesting twist on the reincarnation stories and tropes.
The set-up this first volume has is a solid foundation for a really interesting and cool story! The protagonist has character development by the end of the book. He’s learning and adapting, much like a ‘true’ virus does. The fact that he was a virus researcher in his previous life gives him a good start in terms of figuring out how his existence continues and whatnot, but it doesn’t give him a ridiculous advantage.
One thing that is like to see more of is his past life: does he have family he misses, what regrets does he have, is he going to use his existence for good or continue infecting without remorse?
Before I start this review I want to say that in the afterword the author says that this book was announced in 2018 and is not inspired based on recent events.
TW: a virus, 'cause like, were in a panini right now.
Reading this book was a pure serotonin rush. The art style was absolute perfect, (i mean just look at the wolf, he's adorable). I found it super interesing the this manga was following the view of an animal. I mean, I've just stared reading manga right now but I've never heard of a book following an animal.

🌱THE EXCELLENT
~ A fun twist on the isekai story… which still manages to remind me of the progression of That Time I Was Reincarnated as a Slime
~ Good descriptions of viral infections and ideation of viral lode
~ A fun gradually powering up story
~ Great possibilities for other volumes since it’s huge world and we have already gotten a peak of a potential ally ;)
A 30-yro pharmaceutical worker, who has grown disenfranchised with humanity, makes a mistake one day as he is making a random new virus and wakes up in a new world. Like most random isekai stories, he is given a chance at reincarnation by a goddess and flung to the new world to find his way. As a virus, he must learn how his infective capacity work, how he can multiply, transfer to new hosts and survive the electric bear. 😬
Very light and enjoyable ✨Give it a read.
🌱THE MEH
~ Another isekai story, yes, unfortunately? No…
~ Older rejected male and young excitable female 🤦
♡🌱 But that’s just me ;)
If Cells at work and Reincarnated as a slime had a baby! This is another ridiculous isekai twist, and it works. It's fast paced and funny, can switch between cute and violent well. I love the MC and how they jump between taking over various creatures bodies by replicating itself and spreading to new hosts.
I thought it was interesting to see how he was initially determined to take over humanity. Yet as he begins his new life as a virus, he quickly changes his mind as he starts interacting with various creatures and humans while being in control of a host.
I definitely will be continuing this series in the future, and its worth checking out for a palate cleanser.
This manga is about a virus researcher who is reincarnated in another world as a virus. The premise itself is really funny and even more in the current situation of a pandemic.
The story is pretty much as any isekai with a monster like protagonist (slime or spider). A reckless main character trying to gain new skills, this one is more similar to the spider one.
The art is okay, not my favorite, but not bad.
Overall enjoyable, I give it a 3.5/5.
If you enjoyed isekais, you should give this one a try.
Rating: 4 🌟
First and foremost, I'd like to express my gratitude to Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for providing me with an e-ARC of this manga.
On another planet, a virus researcher was reincarnated as the infection itself? The virus has immense power, but spreading it could be the difference between life and death.
I genuinely enjoy how the author organized and delivered the topic. The plot was quite interesting.
I had a lot more fun with this title than I was anticipating, given, *gestures in 2019-2022*. This is a fun take on reincarnated in another world type stories. Our humble protagonist is a googly-eyed virus. There's some science and sass to this title as our lead infects bigger and better bodies and gains new RPG skills as he goes along, each new body of course, gets the googly eyes. It's a light, fun read with more heart to it than I was expecting!

I was curious about this it reminded me a bit of one anime about being reincarnated as a smile but this one as a virus is super entertaining. this must be taken light-hearted in the lights of COVID but i think it is an entertaining story and all the concept !
A really fun story!
With things the way they are in the world now, viruses have become somewhat of a "popular" topic. I thought it was quite entertaining to read this adventure from the perspective of a virus in a fantasy world setting learning about its abilities and how to survive. I am looking forward to reading the next volumes in the series!
I haven't read any other "Reincarnation" style manga, so I am not able to judge this one in comparison. But I did enjoy this one.
There is a disclaimer in the book that I believe I should also emphasize in this review: the story was thought of and mostly written prior to the world pandemic that started in 2020. This book was not meant to take advantage of it in any way.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the author Kalaku Yuki, the publishers Kodansha and the NetGalley team for providing me with an Advanced copy. I cherished this opportunity to read it in exchange for an honest review.
This title jumps right into the premise. A new virus is born and lands on a rat's nose. The virus becomes sentient in the rat and is able to control its body. Much of this title is the sentient virus talking itself through what it's capable of and what is going on around it. It turns out to be a reincarnated virus researcher and is knowledgeable about what he is capable of. The rat ends up getting consumed by a wolf and virus transfers to the wolf and befriends a human adventurer that is having trouble with some goblins. The virus then transfers to the goblins after he learns more about the human and where she lives. This title reminds me a lot of reincarnated as a slime. Every time the virus transfers to a new being it takes on new abilities and is able to use them to protect itself. Which in theory kind of makes sense for a virus but they end up being more like game abilities than real life abilities. This is nothing like a Cells at Work virus. It was fun but not educational or realistic.
Wonderfully wacky and wild and a little timely, eh?
Honestly it reminds me so much of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a slime. Even the mc looks the same. However, I think there's potential for this story to be fresh and even if it's basically the same, I still like it okaaayyy?!?!
Egalley received in exchange for an honest review
ARC Copy...Yes this is very much one of the over the top, hilarious yet interesting Isekai premises so far. The protagonist is reincarnated as body jacking virus with big cutesy eyes and many abilities that in turn grant other abilities. I have a feeling plushies will be made of the "virus form". I find it cute too that even the protagonist has "evil" plans on his little virus mind...he is forced to realized his "targets" are actually kind and fun to see his former targets actually express affection towards him.
In terms of isekai stories, this is a little more on the wild side. I've accepted wild premises before but this one was a little too wild. Maybe if instead using a stronger word than "virus" would have helped since half of what the main character was doing is beyond a virus.
