Karin Slaughter is just one of those authors who you know won’t let you down, Her books are always wonderfully written, with multiple characters that could possibly be responsible for the crimes. I felt very much attached to the both Emily and Andrea in this story, they had so much depth to them that you Can be forgiven for believing them to be real. I stayed up into the small hours to finish this, as each chapter ending just left me needing more.

Andrea Oliver, the daughter from Pieces of Her, returns in Girl, Forgotten. She has just finished her gruelling training to become a US Marshall. Her family connections see her immediately shipped off on her first assignment in Longbill Beach. She meets her new partner Bible (who was hilarious!) and their job is o protect an elderly judge who has been receiving death threats. Andrea has a second secret assignment, but o find out who killed the judge’s pregnant teenage daughter in 1982. It is widely thought that it was the first murder committed by Clayton Morrow, Andrea’s father.

Girl, Forgotten is told in 2 different time periods and 2 points of view. We learn about Emily, the murdered teen in 1982. Who was the father of her baby and who would want to kill her. Then we have Andrea in the present, learning the ropes on the job as a US Marshall. This town has a lot of secrets, and they do not like outsiders.

Another fantastic Karin Slaughter book, highly recommend. Published June 23rd.

Thanks to Harper Collins UK for my advanced copy of this book to read

This is the second book in the ‘Andrea Oliver’ series by author Karin Slaughter. Not sure why but I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first one in the series. Well written as you get to expect with the author but for me personally just didn’t grip me as her books normally do.

Emily Vaughn is getting ready for her prom night at Longbill Beach which should be the highlight of her year but she has a secret that will result in her death.

Forty years later, US Marshal Andrea Oliver receives her first assignment. She is to go to Longbill Beach to protect a judge who is receiving death threats. Andrea is well aware of the Emily Vaughn case after learning of it twelve months ago and has been haunted by it ever since. The case remains open as no one was ever convicted so Andrea see’s this as a perfect chance to uncover the truth.

Writing this and thinking more about the story as well as looking at other reviews makes me wonder if I was just having a bad day when I read this. I certainly enjoy this authors books so fully intend to read more.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Harper Collins for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

You will find that this new book from Karen Slaughter is actually a follow-up to her original book pieces of her. Andrea or Andy Oliver as she is known is just qualifying as a US Marshal she is then approached as her first assignment to go to the town of Long Beach where in 1982 Emily Vaughn was murdered on her prom night. It is thought that the main protagonist from the first book may also be the murderer of Emily.

As Andy meets her new partner Bible she embarked on protecting the life of judge Vaughn who is also the mother of the murdered Emily. Since 1982 the judge has not known who killed her daughter . Andy must battle with her task in hand of keeping the judge safe but while also investigating the vicious murder of a young girl.

Through investigating the murder entry Andrea Oliver is able to discover more about her father Clay and those who grew up around him.

I personally loved this book it was great to continue more from the perspective of Andy. Here mother was only a small character.. I will certainly be looking out for the next instalment in this saga. A very worthy read and a very worthy five stars.

Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to see an ARC.

It’s unusual to find a novel telling two separate stories that works as well as this one. The first story is that of Emily a high school student who is murdered on the night of her school prom in 1982. She was pregnant after a rape when she was incapacitated and her killer was never found - not that anyone seemed to try very hard. The other story is that of Andrea Oliver, a newly minted US Marshall sent out on a mission to protect a judge who has been receiving death threats. The two stories gradually become more and more intertwined until the author very cleverly brings them into one narrative towards the end of the book. The reader is never in any doubt about which of the stories is being told, and this takes the skill of a really excellent writer. The book did take a little time to get going at the start while the scenes were being set, but soon became really gripping and kept this reader awake long into the night to reach the satisfying dénouement.

This is (unbelievably) the first Karin Slaughter I have read. I thought it was well written and decently done, but nothing really special.

A prologue recounts the death of eighteen-year-old Emily Vaughn in 1982. We then meet Andrea Oliver in the present day as she is finishing her training to be a US Marshal; she is then assigned to protect Emily’s mother as she approaches retirement as a judge...and to try to prove that Andrea’s own father was responsible for Emily’s murder 40 years before, in order to keep him in prison, because he is a manipulative, dangerous man.

Slaughter gives us an engaging protagonist in Andrea and the background in the US Marshal Service is very interesting. Other characters are pretty convincing and well-drawn, but they did all seem pretty stock thriller characters. I found the cutting between the present day and the period leading up to Emily’s murder rather annoying, to be honest, and the This Time It’s Personal aspect felt silly and clichéd. I ended up skimming some bits and didn’t feel I’d missed an awful lot.

Overall, I’d say this was a competent thriller rather than anything exceptional. It’s probably 3.5-stars, but I’m rounding down rather than up because I really did think the personal involvement aspect was such a badly worn and unnecessary plot device.

(My thanks to HarperCollins for an ARC via NetGalley.)

Girl, Forgotten, the latest Karin Slaughter offering re-introduces us to Andrea Oliver, first met in ‘Pieces of Her’ but now all grown up and newly qualified as a US Marshal. Her first assignment is to protect a Judge (Esther Vaughn) who is receiving death threats in the small town of Longbill Beach. It’s no coincidence that this is the town that her father grew up in. Clayton Morrow, her psychopath of a father has served over 30 years in prison and is shortly up for parole unless he is convicted of further crimes. In an effort to uncover a ‘further crime’ Andrea and her partner Leonard Bible (Catfish to his friends) are flung into an unsolved murder from 40 years ago. The unsolved murder of Emily Vaughn, Judge Esther’s heavily pregnant teenage daughter.

Girl, Forgotten straddles two timeframes and as you would expect the tension mounts the further into the story you get. The characters are really well developed with a great solid cast and some real ‘rotters’ thrown in. The story is complex enough to keep things interesting and gives us more of Andrea’s background. As with all Karin Slaughter books I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more about Andrea, Mike, Bible, Laura and Gordon.

This is a really well-written book that flits between two stories, both of which draw in the reader.

In one part of the story, it's 1982 and Emily Vaughn is sneaking out to her high school prom against the wishes of her parents. It soon becomes clear why they are against her going out - she's pregnant which they find a disgrace and hope to hide her away to avoid bringing any more shame on the family.

The mystery at first is who is the father of Emily's baby. When she is murdered on prom night, the question becomes if her killer is the same person.

The other part of the story, set in present-day, follows Andrea who has just graduated as a US Marshal and is sent to protect a judge who is receiving death threats. The judge is Emily's mother, and as part of trying to get to the bottom of who is threatening her, Andrea is also drawn into investigating what happened to Emily nearly forty years previously.

I loved both Emily and Andrea as characters. Both are brilliantly drawn. Emily, on the advice of what seems to be the one real friend she had, begins her own "Columbo investigation" into who got her pregnant. We see her as a vulnerable teenager, part of an apparently "cool" gang made up of people she can no longer trust, one of whom has raped her at a party, leading to her pregnancy.

The descriptions of how Emily was drawn to the gang are believable and really take us into her world. It's also a world where she can't rely on her mother or father either, her grandmother being the only family member who seems to truly care for her.

Andrea also has her own insecurities and issues, tied up with her parents - as did Emily. I enjoyed the descriptions of Andrea fending off phone calls from her mother and offers to "help" her with things such as finding a new coat!

Andrea has deceived her mother about where she is and what she's doing, partly to avoid fuss and it seems partly to protect her. As the story goes on, we learn more about Andrea's dangerous past and her links to Emily Vaughn's family - and daughter.

This is a great mystery story on its own, painting a picture of a town where women aren't safe and where most men can reasonably be considered a suspect. But it's also a great read because of the way Slaughter draws her characters. Definitely recommended!

A girl dies on the night of her prom. She had a secret and the whole town seems to clam up to avoid the truth getting out. But forty years on a young service agent is sent to protect a Judge who has received threats and the secrets begin to unravel. Pacy and entertaining thriller.

I love Karin Slaughter novels and this one definitely didn’t disappoint.
Our two main characters are women and do they go through a lot !?!

A clever story that jumps in time but is super easy to follow and uncomplicated. Our two main characters are brought together by the actions of one man even though the events take place decades apart .

I read this not even knowing it was the second in a series , it definitely works as a stand alone but I will definitely be purchasing the first in the series .

This book has everything you want from a crime thriller and I’m sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. It will grip and intrigue you right until it’s last page .

Thank you NetGalley for arc of Girl, Forgotten.

A newly qualified Marshall, Andrea, has been assigned to protect a judge receiving death threats whilst also investigating the murder of pregnant Emily Vaughn which happened 40 years ago. This investigation is important to Andrea and she will do anything to find the prove needed to put the killer away.

Fantastic follow up to Pieces of Her, with great characters who really bring the story to life and of twists and turns.

Highly recommend. 5 stars.

Karin Slaughter does it again! Even though I haven’t read Pieces of Her, I’ve only seen the Netflix adaptation, I found this very easy to jump straight into the story and back into the lives of the people I’d met on screen, even if there were a few differences here and there
-
Slaughter seamlessly weaves a tale of mystery and suspense that only she can. If you’re already a fan, this will long continue, if you’re new to her work, you’ve got a very enjoyable journey ahead!!

I have really enjoyed all of Karin Slaughter's books and I particularly like her ones like these which are set in recent history as it gives a completely different perspective on policing and murder investigation. This book is split between present day, where a US Marshal investigates a cold case murder of a pregnant teen, and 1982, where a teenager tries to uncover the truth about who raped her, since nobody is willing to listen to her and take her side, but only ends up being murdered. It's a sad and shocking story, infuriating at times, and I was fully invested in finding out what had happened to Emily - although I did find Emily's own investigations more gripping than Andrea's in the present day.

Technically a follow on from Pieces of Her, but you don't need to have read it - I can barely recall the plot and it didn't stop me enjoying this one.

Another excellent book by Karin Slaughter!

One of the reasons I love Karin Slaughter is because she never disappoints as an author!

Her books get you hooked right from the start and Girl, Forgotten was no different!

As always the story was really well written with some great characterizations. The way some of them were written made it so easy to dislike them!

Reading Emily's story made me feel so sad for her, especially when she wasn't even at fault. Without giving away anything, what was done to her was terrible and no, I'm not talking about her being murdered, although that in itself was terrible.

Andrea Oliver, was an interesting character and I liked her. Wouldn't mind reading a few more books with her and Mike in it!

Thank you to NetGalley , Karin and publishers Harper Collins for the chance to read this book.

💭 ᴍʏ ᴛʜᴏᴜɢʜᴛꜱ:
This was such an addictive read. Going straight into the murder mystery got me hooked. There was so much character built around this book that I kept wondering: "Could it have been him/her?" Every single suspect was unique and truly unlikeable. I had to know more. Andrea is the perfect example of someone who needs to stand on her own two feet and I loved watching her grown throughout. The two timelines (40 yrs apart) added so much more dimension to the story. Highly recommend!

I’m fairly certain that I read the previous book in this series, but couldn’t really remember it. Therefore I would have liked a bit more background to Andrea and her mother’s story. I preferred the parts of Andrea’s narrative to that of Emily’s, which I thought was repetitive and over long, slowing down the overall tension. However, this is a thrilling book, beautifully written, and I was avidly turning the pages long into the night.

Karin Slaughter is one of my favourite, go to thriller writers, I always feel that I'm in safe hands with her novels and she never disappoints. Girl, Forgotten features Andrea Oliver from a previous Slaughter novel, Pieces of Her. Andi is now a US Marshall and she is sent to the town of Longbill Beach to protect a judge and her family who have been receiving death threats. However the town was also the location of the murder of Emily Vaughn 40 years ago and the dual timeline moves back and forth between the present day and 1981. The novel also picks up the connection to Andi's birth father from the previous novel.
I love the character of Andi and as you would expect from the author it is a complex, multi layered, well plotted novel with great characterisation. It's not my favourite of Slaughter's novels but I'd still highly recommend it.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.

Who killed Emily Vaughn? In 1982 Emily was brutally murdered.
40 years later and newly out of trading for USMS Andrea Oliver is tasked with protecting Emily's mother, a judge who has been receiving death threats.
Andrea is determined to solve the mystery of Emily's death, for a very personal reason.
I loved this book, it kept me guessing right till the end. I was glad to see Andreas character back again.

Once you have read a few chapters the reader becomes enthralled with the story of Emily and later a marshal named Andrea investigates her death whilst guarding Ester who is a retired judge. It keeps you intrigued until the last chapters.

Andrea Oliver had been living above her Mom's garage for a while and it didn't really suit either of them. So, after one of the hardest challenges of her life, she has become a US Marshall. The usual course of events is to graduate, recover and then begin the next exciting chapter of your life but unfortunately for Andrea that is far too easy! Primed and ready before she's even accepted her well deserved applause she will be heading out on her own before the day ends. Her assignment to try and prevent her own life from imploding, tackling, secretly, the small matter of a 40 year old unsolved crime, and protecting, visibly, a local family!

Longbill Beach is a small seaside town where everyone knows everyone and keep all secrets closely guarded. With a partner she's only just met, her mother unenthusiastic and concerned in the background, Andrea has to hit the ground running. Her own doubts and fears rest unhappily in the recesses of her mind as she presses forward not at all sure if this will be her first or only assignment.

Once again Karin Slaughter has written an instantly relatable main protagonist who has both the strengths and weaknesses this author is so good at exploring. If I'm being extra critical there is, in the world of thriller writing, very little new here, but it's execution makes it a page turner. The new marshall and the 40 year old case are both stories you want to unravel and that, in the end, is the whole point for lovers of this genre.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I really enjoyed this, and found it a very good book to get lost in.

Girl, Forgotten by Karin Slaughter is a contemporary crime suspense that drew me in from the start.
It is told in two time periods – present day and 1981. The action heats up as the roots of present day crimes lie firmly in the past.
A group of friends from 1981 all protest their innocence – but someone must be lying. Someone knows the truth of what happened on that fatal night. What will it take for the truth to come out?
Secrets and lies have been circulating since 1981 after terrible crimes were committed. Someone is trying to bury the past. And someone is determined to uncover the truth so that history will never repeat itself.
The plotline is complex and well executed. The reader is kept on their toes as the action alternates in time.
All the characters were well drawn provoking some extremely strong responses from the reader. The character of Emily really lodged in my heart. She appeared weak to her peers but was in fact strong, tenacious and kind.
I thoroughly enjoyed Girl, Forgotten. It was an epic and compelling read that would make a fabulous Netflix series.
I received a free copy via Net Galley. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
