The setting for the Drowning Hour was brilliantly constructed. The close yet remote island, the half-finished Stanhope Hotel, the Blackwater estuary, the Strood, Nix at Six, and the Drowning Hour itself all added to an eerily exclusive atmosphere that provided its own inherent suspense and intrigue that was well complimented by the psychological thriller-esk plot.
And although I didn’t have any issues with the sisterly language (I actually appreciated it), I did find quite a few subplots and certain situations disjointed and incomplete. And in fact, some parts just felt too convenient to support the plot itself, making certain sections feel unnatural at times. Additionally, I didn’t actually like any of the characters, which definitely makes the entire experience a little less enjoyable.

A well written book with an interesting spooky plot. Anyone with a phobia of water or confined spaces would be well advised not to read it.
However I enjoyed it, as I have with the author’s previous books.
A very dark tale of mysticism, tarot and a very loveable dog.
Enjoyable

Much of this novel is taken up with a seeming ghost story. Hannah is stuck on an island in an Essex river since her sister was killed. The reason she died is revealed quite late on. I thought this was a well written story, but it lacked some pace. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to the publisher for my advanced copy of this book to read.
I have been a fan of most of this authors books but I am afraid this one was a miss for me. For a thriller it was incredibly slow to become a thriller. The main characters of Hannah and her sister felt very young and their way of talking to each other very annoying.
The premise of the book sounded really good but I failed to get hooked.

The Stanhope was a exclusive hotel that was always packed out, that was before a tragic accident damaged its reputation now its talked about for all the wrong reasons.
The claustrophobic nature of this thriller pulls you in. I love the fact this novel is a slow burn, because its so creepy and foreboding.
I can't write too much storyline without Spoilers because it's best into this blind. I will say though if you like a terrifying, isolated thriller you need to read this 🌟🌟🌟. 5

Great thriller. I really enjoyed this book and the combination of psychological thriller mixed with the perfect amount of supernatural too. This is a slow and steady, creepy read, as the tension and claustrophobic feeling gradually builds. It is hard to say much more without spoilers but it is a good read.

Absolutely loved this book, such an atmospheric, creepy yet beautiful setting for an equally eerie story.
I truly felt for Hannah and her unusual fear, stuck in such a pretty but ghostly place especially towards the end - there were some good twists too, keeping me hooked until the fireworks finale!

Tremayne has written a very atmospheric and intense read and one that I enjoyed immersing mysef in. The setting of an isolated hotel on a remote island was perfect for this read, it really added to the sense of isolation and desperation as events intensified. From the beginning, it was clear a traumatic event had occurred at The Stanhope not that long ago and Tremayne slowly reveals the devastating events.
Hannah is a great character, she is likeable and easy to get to know. I was rooting for her throughout the book and she carries the story well. My only negative is the book is a bit too long and it does lose oomph and impact because of this. Overall 'The Drowning Hour' is a creepy, intense read.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for an advance copy.

I hope the author will take it as a compliment when I say this book is deeply creepy, but in a good way. I had to stay up late to finish this one as the tension got the better of me. Very solid thriller.

This story was very slow to get going for me. It was at about the 50% mark that things started to happen and the tale became more interesting. The descriptions were good and I felt convinced with Hannah's inability to go near the water and with how isolated she felt. I did find the baby language between Hannah and Kat somewhat irritating and there was some repetition.
Many thanks to Netgalley/S.K. Tremayne/HarperCollins UK for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

I really enjoyed this book. Hannah works in P.R. in the beautiful island based hotel The Stanhope, A dream job for most but not ideal when you’re terrified of water. As the book unfolds we discover how her luxury home is her prison and a gripping tale follows as she struggles to find the answered that will set her free

Hannah has a phobia of water and she is stuck on an island surrounded by water.
The question is should she be scared of more than just the water around her.
This is a great mystery Thriller. I love isolation thrillers and this didn't disappoint i think this could of been a little shorter but I still had a great time reading it.
Thank you to Netgalley, Harper Collins UK and S. K Tremayne for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This could have been a much better read, but the style of writing wasn't to my taste. The whole premise of being stuck on an island I found not very believable and I didn't really like any of the characters. The whole thing didn't make a lot of sense.

I chose this book because I drive across The Strood regularly, but unfortunately I found the book really slow and not enough to keep me interested. I couldn't quite work out if it was supernatural or something else at times.

This was so disappointing!
I usually love S.K Tremayne's books - particularly the ice twins, but this just fell flat for me!
I found the book incredibly slow - not what you want from a thriller. It states on the cover 'unputdownable' but for me, i didn't want to pick it up -and therefore it took me a very long time to read!
The writing about the claustrophobia of the island, and the fear of the water is very good - but on the other hand, it was so good, it actually made me feel uncomfortable and reduced me to a bit of panic at times... not so great!
I hope that Tremayne goes back to their greatness for the next book - but I just wouldn't recommend this at all!

The Stanhope is a smart hotel on an island off the Essex coast. Hannah is the hotel P.R.. Her sister drowned with several others during a drink and drug fuelled party. Hannah, who still grieves the loss of her mother is so affected by her sister's death that she develops a full blown anxiety state, including fear of water and cannot leave the island. She senses that all is not right with the hotel and suspects that the largely disused east wing is haunted. One betrayal follows another as Hannah gropes her way through her mental haze towards the real story of her sisters death.... powerful people don't want her to succeed.

A rather unusual storyline that promised more than it delivered. A young woman trapped on an island by her own phobias after the death of her sister and living in the only habitation, on the island the hotel she works in. The story verges at times on the supernatural, but never really makes it. As I kept reading I was always hoping for that little bit more to happen or to be explained but when the ending came I found it to be both mundane and unlikely. Not for me I'm afraid.

My first novel by this author and it was ok.
I was unsure if it was meant to be a ghost story or a psychological thriller and as such it missed the mark for me. I found the premise of being stuck on an island due to a traumatic event interesting but it did not hold my full attention.
I found the relationship between the sister's and their special language a little strange. I feel he was trying to show their closeness but it did not work for me.

This is a great mystery thriller.
Hannah has a severe phobia that has left her stranded in a hotel where she works.
Her fiancé comes to the island to visit her but she is too afraid of the water to leave.
There was an incident years ago and through conversations she thinks she had with her sister, Hannah is determined to find out what really happened that night.
When business dries up the manager decides to close the hotel and leaves a few staff there to maintain it but soon things go from bad to worse.
This is a unique storyline and one that certainly kept me guessing about what really happened to Kat.
A good read.
Thanks to Harper Collins and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Unfortunately, I wanted to enjoy this book but it was definitely a bit disappointing.
I loved the concept of this book. I really enjoy books set on islands.
However, this book felt much longer than it needed to be.
It was slow and quite boring in places. The middle part of the book was very repeative.
The main character was annoying, although you felt sorry for her, I never really warmed to the character.
There definitely was a caulstrophobic feel to this book which I did enjoy, however, there wasn't much action till the very end.
Overall, this felt like a pretty average psychological thriller, I've read very similar before so unfortunately does not stand out in any way.
