I really love the perfect series of books and this novel didn’t disappoint. Very aptly named, it both starts and ends in sorrow. Heart wrenching in places and superbly written.
Sadly the download on this kept failing (the app isn't perfect yet) so had to buy the paperback and can't comment on the narrator. However it is an excellent addition to a great series which I can highly recommend.
I am new to this author, despite this being the 6th in the series. Written in a way that does not confuse listeners who haven’t heard the previous books but also not going into too much detail introducing backstories that it would annoy those who have listened in order. I didn’t feel I had missed anything (although I am sure I have) and was able to follow the relationships easily. The only thing that confused me a little was why there were so many non-Scottish characters in a book based in Scotland.
A gripping storyline that kept my attention from start to finish, a great length book too which always makes it even better. Narrated well which added to the enjoyment of what is an imaginative and complex story.
I will definitely listen to the other 5 books in the series as I really like the author’s way of storytelling, warmed to each of the main characters and thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook … other than the last 90 seconds or so - I hope the unexpected cliffhanger doesn’t end badly & there’s a 7th book on the way!
A really great listen, if you enjoy the likes of Joy Ellis, Denzil Meyrick, Jo Spain & Peter May this audiobook is definitely worth listening to.
For fans of Val McDermid and Ian Rankin, this was a good read following the brutal crimes of a serial bomber ripping out the heart of Edinburgh.
The descriptions of some of the deaths are pretty brutal and graphic, but the story of Quinn (perhaps an unlikely name - her boyfriend then moves on to a girlfriend named Aspen, which also feels a little too American!) and her family was enticing and vivid.
I knew that the obvious suspect wasn’t the culprit, but didn’t quite guess the actual individual. But the reasoning behind the crimes was interesting and engaging.
The narrator of the audio book was fine, perhaps excepting the irritating Natasha! Luckily she doesn’t come into the story that much.
Intricate bombs are going off around Edinburgh, a select few victims have one thing in common and the police and medical services are being targeted. DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach must work out the link before more people end up dead.
Wow, this was a heavy read. I loved it but it was traumatic and I am glad it was on audio.
Fields gives us a narrative that is dark and twisted, opening your eyes to a flawed system and being on the side of the villain.
Her writing has such graphic descriptions you can visualise everything and her characters are so realistic I fell in love with Luc Callanach.
This is actually the 6th novel in a series that I was not aware of and this does not take away from the novel. I found this could easily be a standalone. However, if you have not read this book yet, I do recommend you read the other novels first; as after reading this, in which a specific scene happens, I personally don't want to go back and read the other novels, but I would read the next in the series.
So, although I found this to be a heavy read it has not put me off wanting to read more by this author, and in the future, I will know not to let my guard down.
So I’ve read a few in the series so far and I was trying very hard to figure out why I couldn’t remember exactly which series this was. The problem is that this is a common format and a common story. It is told well enough. There are some horribly abusive people horribly abusing people. There are a lot of different police officers who all kind of blend together, not just within the story but amongst all of the police in all of the series that are coming out right now. The story itself was OK. We have to connect a present bomber with a rapist from the past. Those characters are easy enough to keep straight. The police were pretty interchangeable. The narrator in the audio version did the different accents so well that I occasionally could not understand what was being said. I’d have to pull up the digital version just to figure out what was going on.
Overall, an average police procedural with some truly terrible crimes.
Wow, what a surprise this book turned out to be!
I listened to the audiovbook, and it was only on downloading it that I realised this was book number 7 in the DI Callanach series. I usually hate reading books out of sequence, but thought I'd give this one a go anyway and I'm SO pleased that I did.
One for Sorrow is set across two different timeframes and clearly defines both, making it easy to follow. 'Before' tells of Quinn, a young girl, and Liam, a man who becomes obsessed with her. The present follows the story of The Edinburgh Bomber, a serial bomber who both DI Callanach and DI Turner are trying to track down.
Obviously, the characters were all new to me, but I was able to get a good feel of them and their personalities fairly quickly. The writing was excellent and the story was perfectly paced for me, without many 'dull' moments. I found myself feeling quite smug that I'd worked it out, only for the writer to turn my thoughts on their head and go in a completely different direction. There were numerous twists and turns and times where I genuinely gasped out loud!
The narrator was very good; I particularly enjoyed that he did the relevant accent for each character. It made it really clear who was speaking and I found that I liked listening to his voice.
Overall, an excellent book; the best I've read for a while and I have now downloaded the previous 6 books in the series as I need to know more about these characters.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for sending me an ARC in return for an honest review.
Wow. From the minute this book starts you are transported to a Scottish mortuary. The description so vivid it’s like you were actually there. The book then splits into two story’s. That of a young girl and her stalker boyfriend. The other that of a bomber targeting a certain group of people.
DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach are working to stop the bomber. Will they discover who is responsible before more lives are lost. Each death is very descriptive. This adds to the enjoyment of the book.
I certainly didn’t see the ending coming and I even shed a tear. The narrator for the audiobook brought the characters to life and I wanted the story to continue long after it finished.
Totally recommend this book. Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to hear an ARC
Words nearly fail me. One For Sorrow has been an utter rollercoaster of a ride. The book is one brutal shock after another! Helen left nothing off the table. She is brutal, lethal and hard and at the same time gentle, emotional and touching. Her bravest and best book yet. This is a standout book of the year for me. I’m in awe. The narrator brought the book to life and did an amazing job. I was an emotional wreck afterwards. Brilliant!
WoW....Someone poke me!!!! What have I just listened to! OMG! I need a strong coffee now!!!
One for Sorrow by Helen Sarah Fields is the seventh book in D.I. Ava Callanach series and to be honest with you I haven't even read the other six books.! Where have I been?
I was so lucky to have a chance to listen to the audiobook Narrated by: Robin Laing.
This book was one of the best books I have listened to! I even went and used all my audiobook credits I had saved to purchase the other six audiobooks, and I never do that! So it must of been Superb!!!
Robin Laing was excellent and I just loved his voice and all his voices he did for all the characters 5/5 for him.
One for Sorrow by Helen Fields was just superb! This audiobook had everything with lots of twists and turns throughout. It was fast paced and so gritting etc it had me on the edge of my seat several times and it even had me Laugh out loud at some of the comments from one of the great characters said. (Yes, I got funny looks from my hubby)
I gasped, then shook my head in disbelief, It even had me hold my breath and cry especially at the end......so this book had everything! you need for a brilliant book!!
One for sorrow, ...............two for joy is a perfect name for this book. I loved all the characters especially D.I. Ava Callanach she was awesome!
The Biggest thank you to Netgalley, the publisher HarperCollins UK Audio, for this brilliant audiobook; I am posting this honest review voluntarily. One For Sorrow is published on March 3rd.
PS, Even my hubby heard some of this audiobook and now wants to listen to it and the other six books so Robin Laing was brilliant as he never asks to listen to audiobooks!
Loved this audiobook.
Helen Fields really knows how to reel you in with all the twists and turns.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher, the author for an audio ARC in return for an honest review.
One for Sorrow begins with a detective investigating a dear friend's murder, which was done under horrific circumstances. Nothing about this case is straight forward. One twisted lead intertwines with many other seemingly unrelated events. The puzzle pieces all lead to an unexpected serial killer.
Although the pace of the book was too slow for me, I very much enjoyed the plot and the various twists and turns.
The narration worked really well on this book. The story itself was really interesting for a police procedural. I always enjoy a book written by Helen Fields, and I have been enjoying this series - but this was the first time I listened to it as an audio book. This just added an extra dimension and I am glad that I had the opportunity to do so.
I was given an advance copy by the publishers and netgalley but the review is entirely my own.
Firstly, the narrator has a wonderful voice until he takes on a woman. He can come over a bit Lady Bracknell. I will forgive him because the rest is perfect.
This book is one of the most heartbreaking I have ‘read’ in years. I won’t give away any spoilers but two stories run parallel throughout the book. Both devastating. So hard to write about them without giving anything away, but so many good people are lost along the way.
I will be definitely looking for more books by Helen Field
brilliant book that kept me hooked. Great narratation.
I think this was a great book for anyone who likes thrillers and mysterys. it was interesting and fun
If I could write a review only using emojis it would be a big line of crying faces! I've been waiting for the return of Ava, Luc and the team and it has definitely been worth the wait.
One for Sorrow is outstanding and Robin Laing narrates perfectly.
I felt every emotion listening to this audiobook and I didn't want to end. I finished listening two nights ago and it's still on my mind.
Helen's books are not your run of the mill police procedurals. They are dark, tense and graphic. They also feature one of the sweetest love stories ever (and I don't normally do love stories)
One for Sorrow is amazing. If you've followed this series from the start I can guarantee you'll be crying at many points throughout this one.
One of the fastest paced books I’ve read! So much happened, so many twists and so much plot! Can’t wait for the next one. I’m not going to attempt to summarise any of it as I don’t want to give anything away. You don’t breed to have read any others in the series to be able to read this one.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
I've listened to all the previous audiobooks in this series, Robin Laing is extraordinary and, for me, is a part of the series as the characters are :) I felt there wasn't "enough" Luc and Ava for me this time, or maybe I've just been waiting for this book (dose) for too long. Otherwise another gripping story from Helen Fields you won't be able to put down.
I'm now anxiously waiting for number 8... because there will be a number 8, right Helen?
Can't thank everyone enough for the opportunity to listen to this ARC.
OMG
So so good!!
It started out a little slow but I like being reintroduced to the characters but wow it when it picked up it didn't stop and I thought I knew what was happening and had figured it all out but tricky tricky I was pleasently and heartbreakingly surprised by the twist, I very much enjoyed the past and present connected timelines and various point of views.
The narration was excellent but there were a few times where the narrator sounded slow or or out of breath or struggling for air I don't know if this was done intentionally as it was very noticeable with Felicity husband but it was also a few times it was done with Callaghan which seems not suited to the character so might have been an audio issues.
Either way this has been the best yet and I have listened to them all...very sad to have lost Graham but hope this isn't the end!
5 stars!!!!!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books and Helen Fields for an audio ARC of One for Sorrow in exchange for an honest review. I was lucky enough to receive both the digital ARC and audio ARC of this book and alternated between the two formats.
The story:
Where to start... The only reason I didn't read this book in one sitting was having to work! Right from the start I was intrigued and hooked, and the suspense was present all the way through. The story is explosive, thrilling and keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, with twists and turns a plenty. Easily a five star read that I would recommend to anyone who likes detective fiction.
The DI Callanach books are my favourite series, and being back in their world made me realise how much I had missed them. I loved the cameo from The Shadow Man, and my heart aches for certain characters I will not name to avoid spoilers. The only thing I would have changed would be to feature more Luc & Ava, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the next book? Which I now need asap!
If you haven't read the Perfect series yet, do yourself a favour and pick it up - you won't regret it!
The audio:
This was my first time listening to Robin Laing's narration for the DI Callanach books, and I think his narration and style was on point! I struggled to begin with as some of the voices he portrayed were not how I had pictured them (and Luc's accent hurt the French in me at the start), but after getting used to them it worked really well and I would definitely recommend his narration of One for Sorrow to any audiobook listener. He really brought the story to life, and I might listen to the audiobooks also narrated by him for my next reread of the whole series.
