While I had anticipated delving into the history of Saint and Isolde, I found myself happily immersed in the enchanting realm crafted by Adrienne Young. "The Last Legacy" unfolds as a standalone narrative within the influential city of Bastian, situated along the shores of the Unnamed Sea. Bryn Roth's return to Bastian on her 18th birthday, at the behest of her uncle, unveils the family's involvement in a less-than-savory gem trade. Though lacking the high-seas allure of the Fable duology, the novel retains an intriguing sense of intrigue as the Roth family maneuvers to secure patronage and a merchant's ring, aiming to shed their illicit image.
Despite my enjoyment, a desire lingered for a more extended narrative and deeper character development. I hope Adrienne Young treats us to another installment, allowing for further exploration of this captivating world. My rating stands at a solid four stars.
Adrienne Young is one of my all time favourite authors, with Fable and Namesake being two of my particular faves, so naturally I was ecstatic to be able to return to that world with a new story!
I loved the vibes of this book. It lowkey gave YA peaky blinders and I couldn’t put it down.
Adrienne Young has such an incredible way of writing that builds the world and the characters so effortlessly.
Adored it!
I really enjoy this author however I found this stand alone not quite the same and lacking in terms of the plot. I did not find myself reaching for it and found it dragged.
After really enjoying fable and namesake despite disliking the authors previous series, this just didn’t hit for me. Not only was I confused as I was sure that these characters appeared in namesake but the timelines didn’t seem to like up, but also nothing happened. Like really nothing happened. Why am I supposed to like Ezra? He’s never even nice to Brynn but she’s in love with him after she stares at him a bit and then super quickly wants to sleep with him. Also ick to the experienced boy but inexperienced girl thing. At least in fable I felt like they’d gotten to know each other, but this I felt it was so lacking. I didn’t care about any of the characters and the interesting parts weee all just missing. I loved the gem stuff and hoped it would have more of that but it didn’t. I’m going to read Saint but like I’m so disappointed I may go back to avoiding Adrienne Young’s books.
Thank you for my eARC of this book. Unfortunately I didn’t finish this one, I just didn’t get pulled into the story and found myself forgetting about it.
After reading Fable and Namesake, I was excited to find out Adrienne Young was writing a follow up. Here, we meet both familiar and new characters as we learn more about the captivating world that has been created. There's less swashbuckling but it's still really good. This book can be read as a standalone but I'd advise reading the others first to enhance the little details.
The last legacy is one of the books that has left me with very mixed feelings, but also new book in the fable universe? Sign me up!
Many Thanks to NetGalley and Titan books for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Overview:
Bryn receives a letter from her uncle Henrick on her 18th birthday summoning her back to Bastian- leaving her eager to re-join her long lost family.
Henrick has plans- and it does not take long for Bryn to see the family is entangled in shadows and into the dirty business that got her parents killed. The cost of being accepted may be too much for Bryn to bear.
Review:
Plot- overall it was a straightforward story but kept me engaged throughout however honestly it was pretty predictable which way the story was heading. Generally, I found the romance that is heavily implied in the synopsis being a bit lacking and forced at some points and it did not become a focus until over 75% of the way through which I thought was a bit strange.
It was quite light on the fantasy and action but I honestly enjoyed that as the authors writing style and prose made up for this and kept me invested. Pacing wise, the story started slightly slower which is why it took me a while to focus on this.
World building- If you haven’t read the Fable Duology this is fine but some of it may be confusing form a world building perspective- but as I have read Fable I found it extremely well done overall,
Characters- This was possibly the biggest let-down for me and why I gave the book 3 stars. I was not invested in any of them. Generally, they were all well introduced, developed and their interactions and motivations were great in some cases but I found so many of them off-putting/annoying whilst reading that it put me off caring for their development. The big negative on this for me was that Bryn came across as slightly whiny and I think as she was the MC it put me off.
Final Thoughts,
If you enjoyed Fable then you will probably find this pretty easy and enjoyable and a nice re-entry into the world.
ADRIENNE YOUNG DID IT AGAIN!!! I swear she never fails. I absolutely loved the Fable and Namesake duology so I was really excited to read this and explore more of the world she had created. I do say you need to read Fable and Namesake to really appreciate this book. I am so excited for Saint to come out!!
Adrienne has done it again. As a fan of the fable series I loved this alternate ire of that world. The last legacy is a standalone spin off that world and while can be read as an enjoyable standalone. I loved it with my love of fable series.
This has all the makings of an amazing full length novel as well as an awesome novella.
If you want a great adventure read that has strong characters, epic forbidden love and twists that leave you in knots. Pick this up, you will not regret it
I have been a huge fan of Adrienne's work since her debut book Sky In The Deep, The Fable/Namesake world that Adrienne created was so captivating and hearing that The last legacy would be set in that world I knew that I would love this book too. Since The Last Legacy is a standalone, you do not need to read Fable and Namesake first but it is something I would always recommend as there are many breadcrumbs and
In The Last Legacy we follow the story of Bryn Roth, who is after spending most of her life away returning to the city of the Untamed Sea to find her place in the Roth family. Bryn is quick to realise that what she believed to be her future from a young age is potentially not all that it seems to be.
This story is a book about betrayals, family, destiny and retaking control of that destiny, following in what you believe in, including believing in a small forbidden romance that was so incredibly beautiful to follow as it bloomed throughout the book. Adrienne Young has a very strong ability to create a captive solid main character that you can not help but become attached too.
Overall this standalone exceeded all the expectations I had for this book and i can not wait to see what Saint is going to be like
Thank you so much to netgalley and Titan books for providing me with this e-arc
I liked how the story was getting along. The story of Bryn who is trying to make her place in the family was interesting and the other characters were also okay. But I couldn’t connect myself with a family political drama for time being and hence I am DNF’ing my current read. I would probably read this in future and may be I would enjoy it more.
Another great Adrienne Young book, we're back on Bastian following Bryn as she returns to her family the Roth's and their ambition to become legitimate business people. I felt it was a bit slow and boring it places but the overall story was good.
Actual rating: 3.5/5, rounded up
I loved Fable and Namesake, so I was really excited to return to this universe and learn more about the Roth family in The Last Legacy. While I didn't love it quite as much as I did the previous two, this was still a very enjoyable read and confirmation that I will read pretty much anything Adrienne Young writes.
The Last Legacy starts shortly after the events in Namesake have taken place. Although it is meant as a standalone and can easily be read as one (some references are made to the previous book's events but they are marginal to the plot), the worldbuilding might prove confusing to readers who are not already familiar with it as a lot of knowledge of how things work in Bastian is taken for granted.
The Roths had definitely intrigued me in the previous book and I looked forward to learning more about this crime family. The characters were definitely the best thing about this, even though the focus was on only a few of them. Bryn was an interesting main character to follow and I loved seeing a lot of Ezra and Murrow, but I wish we could spend more time with the rest of the family as well.
Sadly, I wasn't all that sold on the romance. I love a forbidden romance/enemy-to-lovers as much as the next person, but its development here just didn't convince me as it just felt rushed and lacking in build-up. Bryn's feelings just seemed to change almost overnight and I couldn't feel the chemistry almost at all until towards the very end of the book.
The plot is also quite thin, as nothing much seems to happen for large portions of the book. However, we do get a fair bit of scheming on all sides and I was all there for it! The descriptions are also gorgeous and I ended up not minding too much about the lack of action as I just enjoyed being in Bastian.
The Last Legacy is a cosy, easy read that Fable fans will definitely enjoy. This kind of book was exactly what I needed when I read it, a quick and comfortable book to take me back to a world I had enjoyed, so I still liked it despite all its flaws but I'm not sure it would hold up on a re-read.

The Last Legacy, an off-shoot of the Fable world felt more like a YA historical tale than the fantasy elements in the Fable series. That said, the town and world that Bryn occupied reminded me me of the barrel from the Six of Crows. A family (not found in this case) that was all about the swindling and trust was not in the vocabularly. I did find it easy to get into and occupy.
Bryn was a savvy character, wise from the start but she still had some villainous street-smarts to learn. Bryn’s arrival with her Roth side of the family was something of a baptism of fire. The characters around the dinner table were the kind of ‘friends’ that might put a knife in your back easily. Some of them grew on me and Ezra certainly did. Hendrick was an evil fella and I do love how Adrienne Young can write these kind of characters.
I missed some of the subtle magic that existed in Fable and I would have welcomed a little in this book. The plot was interesting and I particularly appreciated the themes of being enslaved and unable to control your own future. The story wrapped up a little quickly, but it was a good, encapsulated read and I appreciated this standalone addition to the world. Rounded up rating.
Thank you to Titan Books for the review copy.
Having absolutely loved Adrienne Young's Fable duology, I was keen to return to the universe of this duology for a new adventure. While it isn't necessary to read Fable and Namesake to follow events in The Last Legacy, this book is set after the events of the duology and it was nice to reconnect with a few minor characters, and to learn more about the Roth family, which featured in Namesake.
The Last Legacy focuses on Bryn Roth, who was raised away from Bastian by her aunt, but returns to the family and has to find her place in the cutthroat and shady family business run by the Roths. The family is involved in the gem trade and in all sorts of dodgy dealings, and Bryn undergoes a lot of character growth to find a way of dealing with her uncle Henrik and forging a future for herself and for brooding silversmith Ezra.
The Last Legacy was a thoroughly enjoyable and fast-paced read. Young's world building is immersive, and I found myself rooting for Bryn and Ezra. Bryn was a feisty heroine, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching her claim her stake in the Bryn family, and then risk it all for her chance at happiness.
Thanks for the eARC, Netgalley and Titan Books!
After falling head over heels in love with Fable and Namesake last year, I was so excited to see that there would be a companion novel to that series. The Last Legacy is not really a third book in the Fable series. The characters from Fable and Namesake are not in this book… however it is set after the events of that series, and it’s still in the same world. I am such a huge Adrienne Young fan that I couldn’t wait to dive in, and I was so excited to get an ARC from the UK publisher.
The Last Legacy follows Bryn, an 18-year-old girl who is summoned back to Bastian by her cutthroat family of gem merchants. She finds she needs to be just as brutal to find her place in this family. But as she realises there is more and more dangerous work afoot, she has to decide between her family and her heart.
I absolutely loved The Last Legacy. I found this one so intriguing. We had heard about the gem traders and merchants in Fable and Namesake, but we saw that from the outside in those books. Here the gem merchants are front and centre with all their dodgy dealings, and I loved seeing this side of it. I kind of missed the whole ‘pirate’ feel to it that we got in the first few books but I loved seeing a different side to the world and this series.
Bryn’s character growth in this book is incredible and was amazing to witness. She goes from meek girl, to brutal cutthroat to get her own way and I loved every single moment of it. I loved that she went from the girl she was expected to be to her essentially going ‘fuck it, I’m gonna do what I want’. I loved that attitude and it just made me love her all the more. Add in Ezra, the brutal and brooding hero of the book and I was sold. He was perfect and I fell head over heels for him from the moment he was mentioned. This book was fast paced and action packed and I seriously couldn’t put it down. I absolutely devoured it in a day or two. I just adore everything about this series.
Adrienne Young has absolutely become one of my all time favourite authors. I have read all but one of her books and loved them. And the one I haven’t is on my immediate TBR. She is just an incredibly writer that sucks you in right from the start and won’t let go of your heart till the very last word. I just adore her worlds and her characters and I can’t wait to see what she writes next. If you want an incredible adventure that will leave you shouting from the rooftops over how good it is then I urge you to read this series. While I did prefer Fable and Namesake (hello, pirates), this one was also just incredible.
4 Stars
Adrienne Young does it again! Another wonderful book filled with interesting characters and a unique storyline. I would highly recommend reading the Fable duology before reading this book as although it can be read as a standalone, there are many references and background information that you will not understand if you do not read Fable and Namesake first. Plus, they are excellent books so I highly recommend reading them anyway!
This story centres around Bryn, an 18 year old girl that has been raised away from her relatives, the notorious Roth family. On her 18th birthday she is sent back to join the family business where she finds things are more complicated than she thought.
I really loved Bryn, she had such a unique personality and loved the way she grew from shy wallflower to confident woman taking charge of her own destiny. Her caring nature and bravery was admirable and she is the kind of character you would want on your side!
Bryn has a forbidden love interest and I loved this aspect of the story. I only wish the book had been longer so we could have seen more of their connection!
The side characters are all very interesting and play great roles in the story. They were all interesting and there are a few characters that I would love to know more about!
As ever, Adrienne Young's writing was flawless. She has a remarkable ability to pull you into a story and make you care about her characters. This book was easy to read and understand and she let the story do the talking. Although not quite as good as Fable, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this extra insight into the Roth family who we met in Namesake.
Overall, a wonderful addition to the series and a fun story with lots of twists and turns. I cannot wait to see what Adrienne Young releases next!
Please note that I was #gifted this ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and publishers for this eARC
The last Legacy has it all, adventure, betrayal and the fight of the most deceitful and cunning.
Bryn is the main female character, once the letter arrives to call her home, she is packed off to resume a place in the Roth family.
She soon learns that she needs to be as cunning as the men to claim her stake in the family.
This novel has it all suspense, adventure, love.
The writing is descriptive and nothing goes a miss, each character has a uniqueness to them. As a reader I was rooting for Bryn and was quite pleased she was a strong fiesty woman, rather than a meek "yes" woman.
The Twists and turns were also captivating and surprising.
I felt The Last Legacy was a really great read. Definitely one to put on your list to read.
What a great read and loved being back in the Fable world!
When Bryn has to go back home to Bastian on her 18th birthday she finds herself immersed with her, frankly brutal, family again!
I liked Bryn, she was smart but sometimes a bit whiney!!!
This was a quick, fun fast paced read with mystery, intrigue and a small bit of romance!

With a plot that was better than that of the first two books, and a message that was much, more clearer, the Last Legacy was born to be a much better read. True, the romance isn’t as good, so if you read a story just for the romance you may be disappointed. Seeing as how I don’t, it wasn’t too big a deal, but whatever “romance” is in this seems to be just explained away with the old adage: “love is blind; it doesn’t have to make sense”. Which is good, because it very much doesn’t, especially at first.
I think my favorite character in the Last Legacy is Henrik. It’s not because I relate to or admire him—the man’s an ass. But he’s so complicated; it’s hard not to be fascinated by him. The man will do anything to protect and guide his family to success, but he will also allow none to cross him, including his blood. He has a hard but bleeding heart, and will go to the ends of the earth for his family—even for Bryn, whom he has not seen since she was a child. But then he’ll turn around and sacrifice anyone in order to achieve his goals, blood be damned. It’s this split personality, this seemingly contradicting nature that makes him so fascinating!
At first, I actually took it for bad writing. But he’s written so consistently—flipping between the two extremes often at the drop of a pin. Above everything, Henrik is ambitious. He’s willing to do anything, sacrifice anyone in order to achieve this ambition. But under it all, he has the desire to be loved by his kin, and often looks after them with the care and love of a doting parent—so long as it does not clash with his ambition. I’m not sure you’ll have met anyone like this before, but I have, and Henrik’s portrayal is spot on. So spot on that it’s both mesmerizing and incredibly unnerving.
I’m just going to skirt the edge of the romance here as I don’t want to complain about it constantly. Bryn shows up. She and Ezra butt heads. Then she can’t get enough of him and vice versa. And by unspoken consent they’re destined to fall head over heels—with little to no actual contact. Yes, I’ve heard of love at first sight. This isn’t it. It’s more… loathing at first sight, then love at fifth or sixth. The 180˚ isn’t gradual, but it’s not instantaneous either. It’s just abrupt—and annoying.
The Last Legacy is very much a book about dreams; what Bryn wants, what she’ll accept instead, how her dreams change and grow when confronted with reality, and at last of what achieving these dreams will cost her. For in life it’s so rare to have one concrete, consistent, never-changing dream. So often to be human is to waffle; to question what one wants, to wrestle with the consequences of achieving it. This is the real plot of the Last Legacy—and it changes with the development of Bryn’s own character. But what does she want, and what will she accept? Whether Bryn wants something she can’t have is a ridiculous question; we all want something that we can’t have, that will never come to pass. Just some of us accept this, while others don’t. Will Bryn accept what she can’t have and move on, or persist in achieving something that will never happen, even as her world crumbles around her?
