Thank you to Titan and NetGalley for this eARC of "The Last Legacy" by author Adrienne Young. My opinion is purely my own and some people may disagree with me.
I loved this book and although I've read Young's books before, I really wanted to read this for the cover. I'm glad I did, because this was an amazing book to start the year. There are scenes of abusive nature of in this YA Literature work, but I felt like it was mild in comparison to other scenes in literature at this time.
Bryn is probably one of my favourite Adrienne Young characters and her well developed character arcs truly did help you sympathise and worry for the protagonist. From the get go, I adored the brooding Ezra and the romance throughout with these two was perfectly paced and it didn't feel rushed in this short book.
In conclusion, I absolutely adored this book and rated it 4 stars.
I don't know what to say honestly. Don't get me wrong i like the writing style and how Young describes and crafts her storyline and characters but this one was kind of a bummer. It was really slow at the beginning and i had a hard time to get into it. The characters were okay but no one really seemed to catch my attention for all too long. It's nice to see all those easter eggs from Fable but compared to the original story The Last Legacy was a bit disappointing. It doesn't seem to have the charme and depth than Fable had which is really sad because Fable was one of my favourite books last year.
But i think it was still nice to visit the world again and to meet new characters.
Would i recommend this book? Yeah why not but i would also say not to expect too much out of it
When a letter arrives on Bryn Roth’s birthday summoning her back to Bastian, Bryn is eager to prove herself and finally take her place in her long-lost family.
But her uncle, Henrik has big plans for her and she must win everyone’s trust if she wants to hold any power in the families’ delicate hierarchy. It doesn’t take long to realise that the Roths are tangled in shadows. Despite their growing influence in upscale Bastian, their hands are still involved with the kind of dirty business that got Bryn’s parents killed. With a forbidden romance to contend with, the cost of acceptance from the Roths may be more than Bryn is willing to pay.
With an exceptionally strong heroine and incredibly entertaining plot , I absolutely loved Adrienne’s newest work. lt’s set in the same world as Fable and Namesake but, it is a standalone and, aside from a couple of mentions of characters Holland and Auster—who hails from the Roth family—there’s not much connecting them.
So, if (like me) you’re new to Young’s books you can enjoy this without having read Fable or Namesake. But, if you’re eager to see more of you’re favourite characters you’re going to sorely disappointed as they don’t feature prominently in the plot.
That being said, reading this was a really enjoyable experience! It’s fast paced with the plot’s emphasis on social climbing, illicit dealings and a rather enjoyable though straight forward forbidden romance. I loved the premise (girl learning how to survive in a family of criminals trying to go legit).
The world building was wonderfully descriptive and the rules of Bastian are set out almost immediately after Bryn steps off the boat (though it felt rather organic rather than exposition-y) and I was instantly immersed in the lives of the Roth family and the underhanded dealings.
The Roths themselves gave off huge Peaky Blinders vibes, which I loved, but Bryn was definitely my favourite. She’s smart, fearless and is willing to do anything it takes to make sure her future is her choice, and hers alone.
I loved the writing, which was exceptionally good (I loved the reading experience of this one) and with quotable gems such as “It was a city of stories. But not all of them had happy endings.” I literally couldn’t help but devour it. The pace is also pretty fast despite the plot being more intrigue than adventure but nonetheless, I really enjoyed it.
Overall, The Last Legacy’s a really entertaining and scandal filled standalone that has me incredibly excited to check out Young’s other books. It’d make the perfect weekend read for Historical YA lovers or fans Adrienne Young.
Also, a huge thank you to Titan books and Netgalley for the e-arc.
A captivating read from start to end! The Roth family and all it's secrets is so interesting I couldn't put the book down. Bryn is a compelling lead and I enjoyed how she grew into herself as the story progressed
The Last Legacy by Adrienne Young is the third volume in the Fable series, but it is not connected in any way to the previous volumes.
I was intrigued by the synopsis right away and the cover is really impactful, if it weren't for the length of the book. There are a lot of pages that I don't find them useful to the story, and that's a shame, otherwise it would have been a full grade.
Bryn is called back to return to Bastian to take her place in the family.
Henrik, her uncle, however, has other plans for her. Hers is not an easy return, she must earn that empty seat.
Secrets lurk in the Roth family that could challenge everything Bryn has ever believed in, plus a forbidden love doesn't make things easy at all.
The novel is smooth, the author preferred not to highlight the romance, but leave it as a side story. That's something I always appreciate when it comes to this kind of book, otherwise it would just become a simple romance.
I'm definitely going to pick up the first two volumes now, which I was already intent on reading actually, I was just waiting for the right time.
Thank you to Netgalley and to the publisher for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
The last legacy follows Bryn Roth, who after her eighteen's birthday gets summoned to come live with her uncle in Bastian. Upon arrival, she soon realizes how different her life will be in this new city that is full of intrigue and questionable people. To prove herself to her influential family, Bryn gives everything to fit in and has to face challenges she has had never to face before. There she meets Ezra, a good-looking boy who seems to not like her at all, but who stirs new and unknown feelings in Bryn.
I loved this book, it was filled with everything I adore in a good YA-fantasy. I always enjoy the author's books and this was not different. The writing style is great, the romance made me have all the butterflies and the intrigue kept me on my toes till the last page. My only wish would have been to get more, since I'm still not ready to let these characters go.
I received an ARC of this book from Titan Books, courtesy of NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
”They were smartly dressed and groomed, but something about them had the look of feral creatures who’d been tamed”
Just before we start, I have not read Fable and found I understand this completely so yeah!
This book follows Bryn who has just turned 18 and is sent to her extended family who run a crime empire.
”The pendulum swing of my Uncle’s wrath and affection was a dangerous, shifting wind.”
One thing I really loved about this book was the writing, it was really beautiful and captivating and I honestly couldn’t put the book down.
That being said… I did have some issues with it:
“This was only the beginning”
First of all was the pacing, everything happened so quickly and there was little to no indication of how much time passes in the book, is it a year? is it 3 weeks? I have no clue.
I felt like the ending was so rushed and random and that nothing came together in the way I expected.
My other issue was the plot, I felt I never fully had a grasp on what exactly our MC was doing, whose side she was on exactly, and what her end goal was?
Half the time it felt like she was joining her family and the dark side, while she simultaneously was disgusted by their actions. Like b its a literal crime family what do you expect?
”In that fine line between influential and dangerous ”
One of my other issues was the romance. Both of them had the potential for a great relationship, but it all happened so quick with very little interaction between the two of them, if there was maybe 2 books of slowburn getting to know eachother then I do believe Bryn and Ezra would have been great, but they seriously went from hating eachother to admitting to being in love a few chapters later and I have no clue how much time passed because we are never told!!
All of that said, this is still an enjoyable read, its quick, fun, and I did love the writing style!
Read this if you like:
✨ Crime families
✨ Historical fiction
✨ Forbidden romance
✨ High society deception
✨ Betrayal
I enjoyed this a lot!
The plot was exciting and I was hooked from the first page on. The main character Bryn was fierce, but all of the characters were intriguing since everyone had some kind of agenda.
However, I couldn’t help but feel like the book could’ve been a bit longer — I think it would’ve made a great duology.
