What a beautiful book! The information in this book is so well-presented. The entire book is full of fascinating information about real railway journeys around the world. As my class are huge fans of the Adventures on Trains series and also watching both M.G.Leonard and Sam Sedgeman's latest adventures via Twitter, they are sure to enjoy being able to leaf through this book which I intend to buy several copies of for my classroom. Well done yet again Sam - this book is a huge treat.
“Train journeys are as varied as the world”. This quote sums up the book perfectly, as you travel around the world, no two trains, journeys or history are the same!
Completely engrossing, I spent ages travelling the world by train. Sam Sedgman’s passion for trains shines through this book which is beautifully brought to light by Sam Brewster’s wonderful illustrations.
There are 12 epic journeys shared in this book spanning the globe from South America, North America, through Europe and into Asia and India. Some of these journeys are immediately familiar, for me The Canadian, The Simplon Orient Express and the Eurostar. I was endlessly fascinated by the extra facts and pages to emphasise the importance of these connecting cities, people and industry. As an animal lover, I was pleased to see native animals represented along the journeys as well.
Sam Brewster’s illustrations are impeccable. The use of colours for each journey and the research into the geography, flora and fauna is evident. Each journey is entirely unique and while I can’t imagine getting the opportunity to travel on some of these, I feel as though I have a greater understanding of just what the journey would entail.
This would be perfect in all schools, classrooms and homes. With plenty to see, read and imagine, it is an incredible trip around the world.
Me and my son love the adventures on train's series and when we saw this we could not wait to read it.
The train journeys are so fascinating and the scenery you get to see is incredible.
We have picked out the journey we would most like to do.
This was such a fantastic book, the journeys were fascinating, the illustrations beautiful and the facts were really interesting. It definitely made me want to go on more train journeys in my future and possibly to places I hadn't really considered much before. Sam has such a wonderful balance of facts told in a storytelling type of way, his enthusiasm came through well and infectious.
Solid 5 stars.
A different and interesting way to present non-fiction information for children. Historical information about different countries is linked to railway journeys, and how aspects of their infrastructure were created.
This book is superb! I love travelling by train, and reading this was extremely fun. I adore the illustrations and all the information. I am going to buy a hard copy!
This is the book to stop train enthusiasts in their tracks! On its own, it is an absolutely fantastic non-fiction book for children and adults alike. Paired with the Adventures on Train series also by author Sam Sedgman and his co-writer, MG Leonard, it is the most perfect fiction/non-fiction combination ever!
Epic Adventures takes readers around the world on 12 amazing real-life train journeys. A brightly coloured map of each route is accompanied by tiny details of what travellers will encounter along the way. Facts are dotted around each double-page spread giving details of the location, important aspects of geography, development of the route, significant people and places, and the impact of the railway.
Featuring some of the routes already explored in the Adventure on Trains series, readers will love finding out more about these exciting settings. My son wonders if some of the other routes included in this book give clues to future Adventures on Trains mysteries! We’re really hoping for a Canadian adventure with stops in many of the places we’ve visited together.
This truly is the work of an expert who is passionate about railways. The language is so engaging, reminiscent of the descriptive passages in Adventures on Trains, the details are fascinating and Sam Brewster’s amazing illustrations pull it altogether into a wonderful reading experience.
There’s always a lot of talk about Reading for Pleasure – well, this book sums it up. Children will be queuing up to read it, enthusiastically sharing the gorgeous pages and all the fascinating facts they discover.
Thank you to Macmillan Children’s Books & NetGalleyUK for this fantastic book!
I am a huge fan of the Adventures on Trains series, so when I saw Epic Adventures, it was an obvious choice.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Each epic train journey covers two double page spreads. This first shows the route, and the second shows some of the culture of the area travelled through. There are also a few pages just about trains. All pages are liberally sprinkled with interesting facts. A variety of topics are covered, the nature and scenery, the local culture, the technology. I particularly liked the fact that the exploitative nature behind the building of many of these train lines was not brushed over, though it wasn’t by any means shoved in your face. Sam Sedgman has done an excellent job of picking out great facts, that are full of interest.
The illustrations absolutely bring this book to life. Sam Brewster has done a brilliant job with his colourful and appealing artwork.
Overall, this book is fun and informative, and is simply bursting with fun facts and lively illustrations. I recommend it to anyone who likes trains, or the Adventures on Trains series, or both. It’s delightful.
I was given a free copy of this book, my opinions are my own.
This is a really informative book, well researched and beautifully illustrated. The structure of the text is engaging as there is not too much text but what there is, has purpose. This is a perfect accompaniment to the #AdventuresonTrains series that Sam has written with M.G.Leonard or as a stand alone. A book to pore over.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for this e-copy to review.
I am so glad that Sam Sedgman has created this amazing non fiction MASTERPIECE as I knew that I would absolutely love of. I was not disappointed. This will really interest my class and I’m sure they can’t wait to find out lots more, especially when I’ve shared it with them! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to provide a review for an ARC. So fortunate!
The book looks amazing and the parts I could read were fabulous. However due to the formatting it did not read well on my device and so I was unable to follow the follow. That said the parts I could work out were great and having read the other train books by this author have no problems in recommending it because I am sure the print copy will be wonderful and easy to read.
Wow, what a great book giving information about different train journeys around the world.
The illustrations are wonderful, really eye catching.
Thanks to this book and the Adventures on trains series, I am now desperate to try some of these amazing train journeys.
I can't wait to own this beautiful book - already pre-ordered.
Using trains as a starting point, this is more or less a geography book – and a bold and colourful one at that. The first journey is the Channel Tunnel, leaving London for Amsterdam, and this inspires two double-page spreads, one showing the route, and another a cutaway of the tunnels. Both are high on learning by bullet point, as the text is skewed towards the trivia and caption-length bites of it at a time. Bullet trains are here, too, as after a diversion to southern Africa it's the Shinkansen that gets attention. All the time there are the data about the trains and journeys, and facts about the places they run through, although people here for the STEM subjects are appeased by asides about top engineering projects, railway history and so on. But this should definitely not be bought just for the STEM shelves in the school library – we even cover the history of the Soviet Union when looking at the Trans-Siberian Railway, so humanities are definitely of concern too. There is even the good old camel train. Either way, just because the book might be awkwardly unclassifiable, nothing makes it a bad one.

Unfortunately the formatting was off on my iPad, however I could easily see that this. Ok would be inspirational to fans of the railway series by MG Leonard and Sam Sedgman. Maps and exciting info about long international train travel routes. I will be buying the print copy of this for my 11 year old son who is a top fan of the train series.
Thanks to #NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ahead of publication in exchange for an honest review.
This is a simply wonderful book that acts as a companion-type book to the Adventures on Trains series. I already knew about some of the routes, purely from reading the aforementioned series and it was lovely to find out more about them. I also spent a bit of time trying to second guess the next places that Hal and Nat go, simply based on this book.
It has lots of wonderful information about the trains and their locations / routes and is beautifully illustrated too. A must for any budding train enthusiasts.
A wonderful addition to Sam Sedgman and M.G. Leonard's Adventures On Train's middle grade novels. This fascinating journey that takes in 12 train journeys from around the world, looks not just at the particular details of the trains, their routes and statistics, but also looks at the cultures and environments they pass through. I found many of the details really interesting and many were genuinely fun facts. It's enhanced by the beautiful illustrations by Sam Brewster and good use of the page spreads themselves. A must for any child interested in trains, but also a lovely book for anyone to dip into and enjoy.
My train mad 7 year old son was delighted to read an advanced digital copy of this book with me. We both enjoyed reading all the information in the book, information that covered the train journeys themselves along with interesting facts about places the trains pass through on their journey. The illustrations in this book are lovely with so many little details that you don't necessarily notice the first time you look at them.
I highly recommend this book to any child who has a love of trains. My son has asked if we can purchase a physical copy of this book so he can look at it himself.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book.
Sam Sedgman was just the person to author such an incredibly informative yet fun book looking at twelve of the worlds greatest, epic train journeys.
Each page contains delightful images and a host of information. And it's not just about the trains and tracks, but also the destinations, creatures, inhabitants, food, plants and history. This really is a treasure trove in children's non-fiction that surely will find a place in every adventuresome child's heart and grace a shelf in every home, school, and library.
Any reader of the 'Adventures on Trains' series penned by Sam and MG Leonard will surely be wanting this as the perfect companion for the adventures past, and those to come. I know I do, and I am way over school age!
Aimed at the 7 to 11 age group, I am sure this will also be well received by younger readers as something their parents and teachers can read to and with them, and share the awe, wonder and diversity of the twelve journeys that span across the globe.
This book might be based around journeys you can make by railway, but there’s more than just train facts inside.
The gorgeous illustrations are packed with detail and every page contains a truly epic amount of information. This is a book you could return to again and again. Each time, both children and adult readers are sure to uncover another new fact or fascinating nugget of information about these railways and the countries they pass through.
There are also additional pages that highlight interesting things outside of these journeys, like epic engineering and abandoned stations.
This book is sure to get a new generation of children excited about their own adventures that they might have on trains.
