I am incredibly grateful to both NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for the opportunity to read and review The Match. Being selected to explore this captivating story before its official release has been such a treat, and I can’t wait to share my thoughts on it with all of you. A huge thank you to the teams at NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for their generosity and for making this advanced reading experience possible.
Wilde has grown up knowing nothing of this family and even less about his own identity. All he knows is that as a young child he was found living a feral existence in the Ramapo mountains of New Jersey.
He became known simply as Wilde, the boy from the woods.
Now Wilde has had a hit on the DNA websites where he has been researching. A 100% match, his father. They meet up and Wilde soon realises that his father doesn't even know he had a son and is as mystified as Wilde is by his existence.
Wilde continues to research for his family on DNA websites where he becomes caught up in a community of online doxxers, a secret group committed to exposing anonymous trolls.
Then one by one, these doxxers start to die and it soon becomes clear that a serial killer is targeting their secret community and that his next victim might be Wilde himself...
I liked this book much more than the first book in this series, The Boy from the Woods. It has that Harlan Coben pizazz that we all know and love which I felt was lacking in the previous book.
I found this story so easy to follow despite it being fast paced and full of suspense and mystery.
I love that this mystery was centred more around Wilde and he found himself intertwined in everything that was happening.
I am hoping that the third instalment in this series is on the way.
I can't wait to see what is still in store for Wilde, Hester and everyone else.
With thanks to netgalley and the author for allowing me to review The Match
The match is another great book by the author Harlan Coben, who I find never disappoints and he doesn't with The Match. Fast paced and keeping you guessing, A great book.
Thank you to Random House UK, Cornerstone and NetGalley for the complimentary copy of The Match by Harlan Coben.
I'd read a few books by Harlan Coben before and knew that I'd enjoy this book as well.
While it was slow to get started, it didn't disappoint.
Wilde discovers he's not alone in the world and has relatives who he has matched with on an ancestry type site.
There's a few twists and turns, but the biggest twist was discovering his mother was still alive.
Wilde knows little about his beginnings other than being found lost in the woods and no one responding to the nationwide appeal to help identify him. As an adult, he adds his name to a DNA database , hoping to discover more about himself. A match to a celebrity TV star, who then goes missing draws him into an expected drama; drama that crosses paths with a vigilante group committed to exposing online trolls, a serial killer, the police and the FBI. Every chapter brings a fresh twist and reveals more about the perplexing mystery he finds himself in, whilst also bringing him closer to his own truth. This is a rollercoaster of a read. #thematch #harlancoben #netgalley
I enjoyed this book, well what can you say all Harlan Coben books are very readable and I have been reading him for years. I hadnt read book 1, and from this can see that there is backstory so would be better off reading book 1 first but it did work.
Great way of spending the afternoon going into his world.
I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
I found this one a bit slow as it went on, it started with some oomph but then the pace changed. I find with Harlen Coben books they are either excellent or a bit mediocre. I know many adore his books but I find I like some and others not so much.
I liked the main character of Wilde. He is known as the boy who grew up in the woods. It’s somewhat unbelievable really but puts an interesting spin on things. He’s never known who is family are or where he comes from. A DNA database match changes all that. Wilde seeks out his closest living relative. From there he connects with more relatives and the plot starts to move towards his search for answers.
Along the way people are getting killed and Wilde gets tangled up in the process. He kind of plays Detective and ruffles a lot of feathers as he goes. He has some complex relationships with people. His home is isolated, hard to get to and close to nature which is what he knows best from his time in the wild. It’s a bit of a mixed bag this one.
I just found some elements a bit over the top and like I said the pace isn’t up to speed, literally. It’s an okay read but nothing to get excited about. 3 stars.
Harlan Coben is such a fantastic thriller writer. This book is a brilliant page turner, with twists and turns and intrigue! I love that this book follows on from one of his previous books (the Boy from the Woods) as we get a much deeper backstory from the main character.
If you like thrillers, you'll love this!
Nothing better than a Harlan Coben book. This book was thrilling and I couldn’t put it down. I hope to see it on the small screen soon..l thanks
Harlan Coben always delivers a great read and this book continues his legacy in spades. Interesting characters and he always likes to include characters from previous books which is like bumping into an old friend. Would thoroughly recommend
An exciting thriller read with twists that keep you guessing till the end! Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
The Match by Harlen Coben is the second book in the Wilde thriller series and this has so many twists and turns that it is difficult to decide what is truth and what are deeply buried secrets.
DNA samples that tell who you can be related to, are the basis of the storyline and it is a fascinating story.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is a masterclass in storytelling.
Highly recommended
This is a gripping thriller, which is the sequel to The Boy From The Woods.
The story is about a feral boy called Wilde who was found living in the woods at Ramapo Mountains. Now he is grown up, he uses his DNA to find out more about his background and to find out about any of this relatives.
I found this book really interesting and fast paced, with a lot of adventure, a bit of murder and some espionage thrown in. I enjoyed the ride. Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
This is an absolute gem!!! I’ve been so excited about this book and it hasn’t disappointed.absolutely will be recommending this book to anyone who will listen to me.
This is the follow-up novel to The Boy From the Woods, about a small child who was found abandoned in a forest. Here, in his 40s, the story of his origins is important to him and he tries to find his family via a couple of ancestry sites. Connections are made but there is nothing straightforward about the next step.
This is a complex story with several threads, as is typical of Coben's books. There are recaps on the previous book so the reader knows who the characters are - as much as they appear anyway. Nothing is as it appears, though. The story is modern with the DNA aspects and reality television stars, online trolls, as well as the use of the latest technology. Told mostly from the grown 'boy from the woods' point of view, but not entirely, plus one other character in the first person who holds the key to everything.
An action-packed adventure, some espionage, vigilantes and dodgy law-enforcements. Oh, and murder. There is also loyalty, affection and romance for older folk. But mostly it is a book about fitting in and identity. Cleverly plotted, well paced, complicated but explained in a satisfying ending. Recommended.
This is the second in the Wilde series... if you havent read the first yet go back and start there. The first book is good and this one is even better!
The story develops Wildes character and history further with plenty of twists and turns along the way.
Great character development and well thought out plot.
Looking forward to book 3!
Even though this book is 2nd in a series, I read it as a standalone and it still works.
Wilde doesn't remember anything about his childhood and parents as he was found in the woods alone and 35 years later he is still trying to find some answers. When he signs up to a DNA website he begins to discover relatives which are then somehow connected to murders on a much bigger scale. This story uses 3 different plot points to create an intriguing story which all comes together at the end for a book full of mystery and intensity.
I liked Wilde and his friends but thought there was quite a lot happening at once which was hard to keep up with. Overall a thrilling fast paced book which I didn't want to put down.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance review copy.
I'm a big Harlan Coben fan and was looking forward to getting stuck into The Match, having really enjoyed several of his other novels. I have to be honest and say that whilst this was still good, it just wasn't as enjoyable a read as the others I've read.
It's a complicated story with a lot of characters to keep up with, and perhaps I just don't get enough regular reading time to have managed to keep up with it all. Having said that, if you can invest the time and really get stuck into it it's an intriguing story and one that you definitely want to find out the end to.
I enjoyed this book, it was easy to read and held my attention. I will be reading more from this author :)
"At the age of somewhere between forty and forty-two – he didn’t know exactly how old he was – Wilde finally found his father."
Wilde doesn’t know his family. He doesn’t know where he was born. All he knows is he was found as a small, feral child in the woods near mountains in New Jersey, with no name or idea who he was. Now, he’s found a match on a DNA ancestry website, to none other than his father. But the man has no idea he had a son, and claims he doesn’t know of the mother could be.
Wilde decides to let things lie and move on with his life. But then he finds more family members online, which somehow draws him into the world of doxxers and a highly secret group that exposes – and punishes – online trolls. When members of the group get killed, one by one, Wilde investigates and soon is in danger himself.
At the same time, a reality TV star goes missing after shocking revelations that appear to show he’d sexually assaulted someone. The matters are linked, and it’s up to Wilde to discover how.
I wasn’t so crazy about the first Wilde book, ‘The Boy From the Woods’, even though the concept fascinated me. So I’m not entirely sure why I requested the second book from NetGalley but I’m not sorry I did. I was intrigued by Wilde’s discoveries about himself and especially about the central premise – I’m sure we’ve all wished that online bullies could be found and punished.
‘The Match’ is pacey, interesting, full of tension and a great action thriller.
Yet another brilliant book from Harlan Cobain, Wilde who was found living in the woods as a child, and knows nothing of his past or real family. A D.N.A test links him to his father however things are not going to be straight forward as is usual in Harlan's stories as other relatives are revealed and Wilde is accused of murder .Plenty of other side stories are woven into the plot and yet another success.
