I have not read all of the Gamanche series of books but when I do I am always please that I have.
A great setting, cleverly plotted and with a set of characters that are sympathetic and true to life.
This is the latest book in a long series. This book is exciting and gripping. The characters are well developed.
A great addition to a fantastic series.
Thank you for providing a review copt of this book. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped and did not finish. I appreciate the opportunity.
"All the Devils are here" takes Gamache to Paris to visit his family; they all plan to meet up with his Armand's Godfather Stephen while there, but things soon take a strange and desperate turn, and Gamache must try to figure out who is targeting his family before events end in tragedy.
Before I read this, the Paris setting had me slightly concerned - I mean, how could you have a book about Gamach that wasn't in Three Pines! (I know there are one or two others previously but they seemed closer to Three Pines and still had some villagers in them...) but I should not have been worried. The change of setting works amazingly well, and I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of the book, plus full of emotion for most of it too. Anything negative happening to any of the series' characters now feels like a blow against my own family.
Penny's trademark cosy but enthralling vibe is absolutely continued here; the wit and humanity we expect from Gamach et al are ever present through ATDAH and I cannot wait for the next in the series already.
I had to DNF this book about 44% in.
I just was not invested in the story, I did not care for the (many!) characters, and the plot seemed to budge just a little.
This was also my first book in this series, so maybe that hindered my overall experience, but I just could not (and did not want to!) come back to it.
Maybe I will come back to it - but I doubt it. It really didn't pique my interest in the slightest.
Thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC!
A thoroughly entertaining and engrossing whodunit, All the Devils are Here keeps you guessing until the end, which, although important, is but a necessary conclusion to what, for this reader, is the best part of Penny´s books: the way she weaves a story within a number of stories. In this case, relations father-son (a number), the deeds of the past (again a number), friendship, birth-death... there are so many strands (walking Paris, evoking its streets and places also has a big pull) that effortless merge and make the story grab you that I am sure I am not the only one who finds this intelligent entertainment, filled with ethical and moral considerations lightly yet pointedly drawn to our attention, difficult to put down once started.
Inspector Gamache is as urbane, thoughtful and contained in his wrath as per usual, in Paris with his wife and old billionaire godfather Stephen to see their children and partners now living there and about to make them godparents again (Anne is having the baby daughter announced in the previous novel of the series). Into this family reunion which opens with a wonderful conversation between Armand and his elderly (93) but powerful godfather Stephen in front of the Gates of Hell in the garden of the Musee Rodin, violence erupts in a totally unexpected and engrossing manner... the unknotting of the truth will involve trust, links to the past, the death of innocents, greed, revenge... I really think that story line is better kept totally under wraps, full of surprises!!
A great read, suspenseful, thoughtful, funny in parts, with some guignol scenes which were supremely fun to read, and loads of Parisian food and drink and wonderful ancient buildings. Recommended heartedly and even if it is part of a series, this novel can be read on its own perfectly well although the enjoyment of discovery through the series of the background stories will be missed.
With many thanks to the publishers via NetGalley for a copy of this excellent, thoughtful and humane mystery novel.
This book takes Gamache and his family out of their comfort zone and into Paris. I am always at a disadvantage here as I have come to this series late and are not reading in the correct order. A puzzle to be worked out, bodies and general jeopardy. Definitely enjoyed this but prefer the Three Pines location. Thanks to Netgalley.
I feel lucky to have had this book early from NetGalley, and it's the 5th one in the series I have read and I am hooked!!!
Some great characters in this book, Inspector Gameche, his family and extended family.
The book is suspenseful, full of historical facts and has a twist at the end. Will recommend and can't wait for the next book in the series, but, I must read the rest of the series first.
Have only read the first book of the inspector Gamache series and really enjoyed it. This book was also very enjoyable and I will definitely read the rest of the books in the series.
In this sixteenth instalment of Louise Penny's Chief Inspector Gamache Mystery series the Gamache family are to find themselves thrust into a nightmare that threatens them all. Armand and his wife, Reine-Marie are visiting their children, Annie and banker, Daniel in Paris. Former homicide detective, Jean-Guy Beauvoir left his job at the Sûreté du Québec and is now working for a multinational engineering company. After a family meal, Armand's godfather, 93-year-old billionaire, Stephen Horowitz, is hit by a van, his life left hanging in the balance. Paris police chief, Claude Dussault, and Irena Fontaine head the investigation, but Armand is not happy where the case is leading so returning to his former role as detective, Jean-Guy, Armand and Reine-Marie, a skilled researcher, involve themselves even though Armand is out of his jurisdiction.
Family tensions and potential police collusion are combined creating a veritable cobweb in this tale of murder and attempted murder. An excellent character study, All the Devils Are Here also has weight as a solid and enthralling, clever detective thriller. Very highly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Hodder & Stoughton via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
This book is set in Paris. Armand and his family are all there. Daniel, Roslyn and their family have been there some time and Jean Guy, Annie and Honore are about to be joined by a new baby daughter. Armand and ReineMarie have come to Paris for the birth. On their first night there, Stephen, Armand's godfather, is knocked down in a hit and run. When a body in Stephen's apartment, it becomes clear that the accident was actually attempted murder.
What follows is a maelstrom of events in which Armand struggles to find someone to trust. He has to find the reason why Stephen is fighting for his life in hospital and finds it difficult to know where to start.
Armand is facing a race against time and it is his families lives that are at stake
I loved reading this.
I was a late starter with this series. This being only the third one I have read but I really enjoy them. Set in Paris I quickly got to grips with all the family members which I think made it more enjoyable. These are well crafted, thoughtful novels from Louise Penny. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to review. Great book.
I love this series and I think that Louise Penny is a master storyteller. This book isn't amongst my favorite as I found it a bit too slow and I missed the 3P setting.
It's an enjoyable story, i liked it but it took a long time to feel involved and sometimes I struggled with the plot even if it's quite well developed.
Not my favorite but a good book that I recommend.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
Armand and Reine-Marie were in Paris for the birth of their grandchild. A far cry from his job as The Head of Homicide for the Surete du Quebec. When his godfather Stephen is run down in cold blood he cannot help but be in the thick of the investigation. There is a lack of respect from the Paris police for who they believe are just provincial colleges from Quebec. There is a lack of urgency even when a body is found in Stephen’s apartment. Armand will not realise until to late how this investigation will involve his close family. How out of terror goodness may rise. You really see a part of Paris not normally on the usual tourist routes but that comes with a much more interesting story. A strong story in this wonderful series following Armand and his family and friends. You can start with this book and fall in love with the characters and find yourself being swept up into the world of Three Pines.
I was given an arc of this book by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I found this novel absolutely stunning in terms of characterisation and plotting. Armand attends a family dinner where things take a turn for the worst when the man who raised him is injured. Armand does not think it is an accident, and decides to try to get to the bottom of the mystery. The problem is that his patron has made many enemies in business and the investigation is lacklustre and perfunctory.
Set in Paris, this novel is wonderful in all respects, and I highly recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley for this E-arc.
Louise Penny has done it again. A captivating Mystery Which is a gripping page turner. I loved that the reader gets to find out about the Gamache family. Finally learning more about Daniel Gamache. The one negative to this instalment is that it wasn’t set in three pines and therefore lots of the beloved characters are missing.
Stylishly Crafted…
A new entry in the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series is always a treat, this is book sixteen in the series. The Inspector goes in search of secrets, a search which takes him to Paris. Ever suspenseful, clever sharp dialogue with a snappy and unpredictable plot and twists and turns aplenty. The ever empathetic, upstanding and knowing Inspector is the ideal protagonist. A worthy addition to this long running series - if you have read this series then you may have your favourites but each mystery is always hugely satisfying, stylishly crafted and never, ever disappoints. Consistently superb.
