I definitely needed this book. It has been years since I had any contact with growing vegetables. Having a great refreshing reminder on how things work has been fantastic. I also found so many new hacks which I hopefully plan to use in the near future.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this lovely ARC.

This is a fantastic, clear and comprehensive guide to growing your own edibles. Covering everything from where and how to grow through to harvesting and storage, accompanied by clear colour photographs. Both dig and no-dig methods are covered, as well as how and what to compost.

The centre of the book contains an A-Z of edible you might want to grow., As well as covering the usual fruit and vegetables, Joe also gives information on herbs, edible flowers and perennial edibles.

This is a great book and even as someone who has been growing edible for a good few years, I learnt a few things.

I feel like I should firstly say that I’m not a gardener, not even a little bit, but I want to be and this book actually makes me think that I might be able to grow some things in my garden that I could even eat, and that thought absolutely thrills me!
It is easy to follow and has lots of useful tidbits of information for starting an edible garden .
I’m feeling inspired to do more with my garden than just mow the lawn and complain about the weeds.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this book in return for an honest review.

Insightful and knowledgeable starter book for the new gardener who wants to get growing!

Edible garden really knows how to get your green thumbs in the growing business! I've got everything now to make it happen, my pots, compost and my seeds, even a trusty watering can but I couldn't have got the confidence to get started without the Edible Garden wisdom.

Covering a wide range of topics soon helps the confidence flow, it's well written, encouraging and reassuring in it's nurturing of the reader which helps them to go on and produce something truly lovely for their own garden.

The structure for this book is very helpful, creating beautiful and inspirational pictures to furnish the book with and also bringing small chunks of importance into the mix, it really is a no brainer, easy to read, easy to follow and with plenty of tips, any newbie gardener would be mad not to go out and get it put on their shelf!

With thanks to NETGALLEY for the FREE ARC in return for my review, many thanks again!

A very interesting wee book for creating an edible garden. This has given me some ideas for incorporating the edibles into areas for the decorative plants in my garden. The book is full of useful information.

I have always potted about in the garden since I could walk but recently (since the first lockdown, really) I have got bitten by the grow your own bug. I have set out my own patch in the garden, gathered my pots, compost and seeds and started sowing. So, this book came along at the absolute perfect time, it's insightful and incredibly knowledgable, it's really easy to read and follow, with great tips even for a beginner like myself. It's really well laid out, which makes it easy to jump to different sections. It's a great addition to any newbie kitchen gardeners bookcase, I will certainly be buying the paperback too.

I'm glad to have read this very informative book! It's filled with a bit of everything you would want to know before starting a garden.

My only real issue is in the order of the vegetables/fruit in the book, they are in alphabetical order, and I think it would have been easier to use this guide if they were in month order, so you had to flip less. The order doesn't detract from the great photos and information within!

The whole book is a lovely starting point for any beginner!

Edible Garden is one of a set of accessible gardening guides by Joe Swift covering a range of gardening topics. Due out 3rd March 2022 from Collins Reference, it's 224 pages and will be available in ebook format.

This is a well written and no-nonsense guide. The author has an encouraging and reassuring voice and information is presented in small digestible (haha) bits. Obviously the emphasis throughout is on edible plants, but he's done quite a good job of choosing the plants which are as attractive as possible and most of which have aesthetic appeal in addition to their utilitarian food uses. Most plants are referred to by both common and botanical (Latin) name for clarity and identification.

The book is full of full color photographs for inspiration and clarity. Although some of the photos are stock photos as credited, there are a number of bespoke photos and tutorials. One of the high points for me with this volume was the useful and specific extra information included on pruning, building up beds, winter protection, raised beds, year round gardening, and the small tutorials and other resource information. Spelling and terminology are British English, but won't present any problems in context with readers from North America.

Four and a half stars. This would be a good choice for public and school libraries, gardening groups, community/allotment gardens, suburban gardeners, homeowners, etc.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
