Similarly to We Were Liars, this title took a while to get me gripped. There’s always a load of characters to distinguish between which prevents me from becoming immersed within the plot. Having said that, I really enjoyed the plot line and about half way through it became a page turner for me. Gripping characters and intriguing plot.
The Sinclairs are privileged, they spend their summers on a small island off Martha's Vineyard. They use a sailing boat to collect their groceries and visist the library. They are quite secluded but the three sisters Carrie, Penny and Bess are close. Tragedy strikes the family when the youngest sister, Rosemary, dies in a tragic accident.
The story follows Carrie as she tries to cope with the bereavement. She is drawn to Peff, a freind of the family who is different to their usual family friends and staying for the summer. Crrie is quite unprepared for the effects he will have on her.
I was eager to read this after having read We Were Liars when it was first published.
A charming story of love, loss and healing.
Having already read and loved 'We Were Liars', I really enjoyed the prequel which gives a greater depth to the characters. The story is told from Carrie's perspective, a narrator so unreliable it almost opens up more questions than it answers, but this is the beauty of the duology - it is realistic because people are unreliable narrators of their own lives whether they like to admit it or not! The twist at the end of We Were Liars shocked me to the extent that I had to read the book immediately again. Despite being more dramatically subtle, Family of Liars has achieved the same, by giving new perspectives to the SInclair family, I will again be searching for my copy of We Were Liars. If you enjoy an unreliable narrator and a thriller with cleverly written twists coupled with the escapism of a 'perfect' setting, you will love it. Another success for E Lockhart - a book that just cannot be put down!
I wasn’t the biggest fan of we were liars but I wanted to give E Lockhart another try, and I’m very glad I did. I was hooked from the star waiting to see what was going to happen and I wasn’t disappointed, especially with Carrie’s twist in the story at the very end. I also love rosemary so much.
It has been a long long while since I read 'We Are Liars'. I couldn't remember what had happened except for that huge plot twist. But when I saw a prequel coming, I just knew I had to read it.
'Family of Liars' was soo good and if anything, it reminded me of why I thought the first book was just as good. The writing style is just perfect and eases you into the story beautifully. I loved reading about the lavish island lifestyle, the fancy dinner parties/events with the little inserts of drama and secrets. With sequels or prequels, I always ask myself was it necessary? But with this book, the question didn't ever crop up. I think for those of us who read 'We Are Liars' years ago (I don't mean to make us sound old!), it's really nice to go back to the whole Sinclair family and to relive it all again albeit from a different perspective.
Such a great prequel, the stories and themes from the previous novel are prevalent and tie everything together. Really helps put into perspective the story, but also works as a standalone novel. When you think the family history can’t get any more juicy, this book really does gave a lot to give
A long awaited sequel to the stunning We Were Liars. This feels like a very mature book that raises some interesting questions about contemporary society. Lockhart does a fantastic job of capturing the feel of summer in her prose.
The long-awaited new book in the Sinclair saga. Family of Liars is the prequel to the smash hit We Were Liars by E Lockhart and in it we see how keeping secrets seems to be a family trait and with a very regal "never complain, never explain" ethos we can see how the Sinclair family have managed to survive all these years. Deception is part of their DNA make-up.
You don't have to have read We Were Liars to enjoy this book. It does in fact reveal a few spoilers when read the wrong way round. You cannot help but feel completely engaged with this dynastic (if not completely messed up) family.
I really hope that there are more secrets to be uncovered.
Family of Liars by E Lockhart is available now.

a prequel to we were liars, an eerie and mysterious tale. This book looks at the Sinclair family trying to uphold the Sinclair name. the character detail creates a captivating story. i did enjoy the story and felt invested in the story line.
I read and enjoyed We Were Liars last year on the recommendation of my pupils. I found this prequel well paced and emotional. It added depth to characters and relationships were believable.
Having read’We We Liars’ several years ago, it was interesting to gain insight on why the sisters are the way the are. It was great to revisit the island and the secluded life away from the hustle and bustle and yet darkness still pervades. The nature of being removed from general society seems to give rise to behaviour and acts that will forever remain secret; where a different rules apply as the young people run wild , seemingly without notice.
This book made me want to reread’We We’re Liars’ to reflect on the adults and identify where the rifts and events of that summer left them
If I’m being honest, I was worried about reading this book because I really loved We Were Liars and I didn’t want to ruin my enjoyment of that book with an inferior prequel. Thankfully, I needn’t have worried because the story around this generation of Sinclairs is every bit as compelling and immersive.
Here, Carrie acts as our narrator and she, Bess and Penny take centre-stage. This is a family haunted, by ghosts that they may or may not see but also by the people and events that they don’t talk about.
The majority of the story takes place one summer on the island when a group of boys come to visit. They act as the catalyst for a summer of romance, jealousy and revelation that will change the course of their lives.
I can’t help wondering if there’ll be a further book centring on Tipper, Harris, Chris and Buddy. I hope so!
Loved this book.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an arc of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed the book but didn’t like some of the characters! The family dynamic was odd but supposed to be and sometimes made it uncomfortable to read as to what they were happy to ‘get away with’ and not been made accountable for their behaviour.
Unsure if I’d read another with these characters.
Well, this book was a wild ride from start to finish. Just as intriguing as the first book, returning to the Sinclair family and their tangled web of lies kept me hooked. The twists and turns were expertly written and I really enjoyed learning more about this weird family and their lives.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. A good follow up to We Were Liars and probably a better read, though that will be down to personal preference! Good writing and characters, I enjoyed it.
First things first: Family of Liars is a prequel. If you never plan to read We Were Liars, this can absolutely be read as a stand-alone but, as it contains spoilers, I’d suggest reading that first.
Family of Liars follows Carrie, one of the beautiful daughters of the old-money Sinclair family, as she recounts her experiences of one particularly emotional summer on her family’s private island and reveals that their perfect lives may not be quite as perfect as they seem.
This book is definitely not as traumatic as its predecessor, but it is just as gripping and written in the same beautiful E. Lockhart writing style that I’m completely in love with. The chapters are short and fast-paced, so it’s an incredibly easy book to read in one sitting, and I really think that it should be read this way if you can to get the full effect of being lost in their summer holiday with them.
I was interested to see that Carrie was chosen as the protagonist for this book, but her unique perspective made her the ideal aunt to tell this story, and I genuinely now want a book from the perspective of every single member of the Sinclair family. All of the characters in E. Lockhart's stories are so perfectly crafted that seeing them all through Carrie's eyes, after seeing so many through Cadence's eyes in We Were Liars, made them all feel completely real.
It's hard to say a lot about the story without spoilers but, basically, I adored this book. It’s as quick a read as all of E. Lockhart’s books seem to be and combines the more gritty intensity of Genuine Fraud with We Were Liars’ surrealist style flawlessly. My expectations were insanely high for this book and I’m not hesitant to say that it completely lived up to them.
When I had the opportunity to request an ARC of the prequel to 'We Were Liars,' I don't think I've pressed "request" quite as quickly! I was (and am) a huge fan of 'We Were Liars' having read it when it was first published. I was telling anyone and everyone to read this gripping novel and couldn't wait to read more about the enigmatic Sinclair family.
Prior to starting, I was worried that too much time would've passed between me reading the first novel and this prequel. And while I didn't have a full grasp of who each of the sisters were in respect to their grown up selves in "We Were Liars" I don't think this hindered my enjoyment at all. Going back to Beechwood Island was comforting and unnerving, familiar and unknown all at the same time. Lockhart completely pulled the rug out from under me with the first novel, so what on earth could happen in this one?! And this was one of the only negatives I will say: I spent a lot of the novel looking for the signs or expecting a shocking twist. Having been so blown away by the twist in "We Were Liars", the twist in "Family" failed to knock my socks off. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the novel; I did! But I don't think I'll be waxing lyrical about this one quite the same way as I did with the first.
An interesting prequel to We We’re Liars.
Not particularly fast paced, but steady and enjoyable, this story lives up to its name.
Three sisters spending summer on the family island are joined by their cousins and some boys. Love, despair, loyalty and deception are all part of this splendid story.
This was a pretty solid standalone story as well as giving some insight into the sequel of this book.
However I don't think it is required to read this one to enjoy the other book and felt at times this one felt a bit forced.
SPOILER FREE REVIEW!!
Many thanks to Netgalley for the eARC of this book, I have my own copy purchased now. Unfortunately my life has been hectic so this book is on sale already and I wasn’t able to review for publication date, but that’s good for you as you can get it right now.
Family of Liars by e. lockhart is a prequel to her book We were Liars which I’d read and enjoyed a few years ago - It does contain spoilers! The author seems to have her own very unique way of writing and I actually really enjoy it. I haven’t read any of her other books yet but would love to try some.
If you’ve read and liked We were Liars then I’m sure you’ll enjoy this and it’s a good, easy, fast paced read. If you haven’t read We were Liars I’d definitely recommend reading that first to avoid spoilers but I guess you could read them prequel first too.
I enjoyed learning more about the Sinclair family, I liked comparing the maps in each book too, I enjoyed learning Carrie’s story.
