I know so many people who love this book so I know I'm in the minority but it didn't connect with me. I knew I should have been eager to figure out what happened, instead I just felt a total disconnect. Mainly because the characters were so hard to enjoy that I couldn't find a way in. The writing style is definitely fun and interesting though. I expected it to be a challenge but it actually flows easily once you get into the rhythm of it.

I had read so many good reviews about this book so was excited to read it and at first I couldn't see what all the fuss was about but as the story went on I really got into it and never in my wildest dreams guessed what a turn the story would take. So to be honest I have to say I think it was actually a really good memorable book. I would like to read the book again knowing what I now know.

I really enjoyed the story of this, the writing style (although a little difficult to get into at first) was fast paced and gripping and it was a really quick read. For the first few chapters I was however a little confused by the amount of characters introduced and their relationships with each other but it became much clearer as the story went on! I loved the concept of the island and a family that can do no wrong in the eyes of themselves and just felt that whole storyline could have been explored so much more and the story could have been so much bigger. I would have loved to learn more about the aunties relationships with each other, what led them down that path and the secrets they all harboured because of the family beliefs (In my eyes, it could have almost become a drama filled Netflix series if it had been done like this (like Gossip Girl!)). Overall I think the concept has the ability to be something incredible but for me the execution although good wasn’t mind blowing.

I first read this book in 2014 and it has remained one of my absolute favourites ever since. I love everything about it, the prose, the characters, the plot (especially the plot). I've just re-read it and despite knowing the ending I enjoyed it just as much; it's superb, a classic and a genius piece of writing. Highly recommended!

A tragic tale of family, friendships and love. Beautifully told and I did not see the twist towards the end coming.

I had been hearing about this book all over booktok so decided to check it out and I'm so glad I did. It's an emotional roller coaster ride as you try to piece together what happened in the summer of 2015 which led the main character losing her memory and what secrets are her family keeping from her.
Although I guessed the twist about half way through the book that didnt take anything away the story.
Thank you to the publishers and net galley for providing me this book for review.

I seen a lot of the hype around this book and thought it was going to be amazing! However I didn't enjoy this really at all.

I think the characters are quite unlikeable so when tragedy strikes, I don't care. Gat was so pretentious and just had such a I'm the victim because I'm not rich vibe, Johnny wad painted to be an idiot and Mirren just seems to be there to make you sympathetic to Cady.

I really wasn't a fan of this book.

A book that leads down many different paths. Unreliable narrator's, family differences, the trials of adolescence. An enjoyable read that kept me interested throughout.

Wow, I loved this book. So clever and vivid, A brilliantly written book definitely not just for YA. The people are written so real, and at the end of the book, you will want to read it again when you know what you know, as you will find the well hidden clues.
Really recommend this novel.

Heard about this book when it came out but somehow didn't get around to reading it. Quite a powerful book .I wasn't expecting the twist at the end but looking back at the clues, I should have. Reminded me of the priviliged feel of the great gatsbys glamour. A decent read but not one of my favourites, not my favourite genre

I read this book in 2014 and loved it so much back then and still love it just as much now. I think my enjoyment of this book is purely based off of the good memories that I have related to this book, as I think if I read it today for the first time I would not enjoy it as much as I did back then.
I do still class this as one of my favourite books of all time as it meant so much to me back when I was 14 and had not read many books back then.
I still enjoy the characters and the plot twist and I still love the writing and the way this book is written.
I cannot wait for the new prequel for this book. A little bit nervous as to what to expect in the prequel but I will still be reading it when it is eventually released.

I struggled reading this, even though it was a short(ish) story it took me nearly two weeks to get through, I don't know if that's because of the writing style or because I disliked the characters, I'm not sure. A 17 year old calling her mother "mummy" makes me cringe so much!

HOWEVER! The actual story is fully of many twists and turns, most of them I did not see coming! Very powerful, very emotional, it really packs a wallop. I need to read something light now!

What was this?

How was this book catapulted into popularity by BookTok? How did anyone enjoy this?

I only went into this because of the hype, and now I’ve learned to never trust hype, because this is one of the most boring novels I’ve ever read.

The main character is meant to be an unreliable narrator, but I couldn’t get over the whiny attitude that didn’t evoke any sympathy for her. I blame that mostly to the writing, which was awful. These sentence structures and flow was horrific to get through, and usually I can get past bad writing if the story is great, but it was such a chore.

And that twist… I didn’t care. At that point I was glad the book was over.

This is going to be a difficult book to recommend because I can’t find any redeeming qualities to it.

"We Were Liars" is quite a difficult book to review as I don't want to spoil anything for anyone but I couldn't put it down! The family dysfunction is off the scale! The author portrays decaying relationships very well. The characters are deliciously horrible. I particularly enjoyed the fairytale interludes and am intrigued to read the prequel, "Family of Liars".

I love this book. Such a twist at the end. Can’t wait to read the new book. I work in a school and will recommend this to everyone!

What a gripping mystery

This was a very disturbing but good read.

Thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish and could not get enough of.

This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller!!
Absolutely loved the characters, the plot, the tension - impossible to put it down.
Certainly recommended!

This is a well, though uniquely, written book by E. Lockhart. It was published in 2015, and I had read it before but wanted to reread it before the prequel was released in May.

The plot is intriguing and keeps your interest. However, it is difficult to say too much about it without spoilers or repeating the synopsis, so I won't try, aside from saying it is about lies, beauty and betrayal. It's not dark all the way through and manages to seamlessly switch from dark and heart wrenching to warm and uplifting instantly.

The characters were well developed. However, I felt the 'supporting' characters and mothers could have been a little fuller. Still, I don't think this would have been easily possible due to the shortness of chapters and writing style.

There are plenty of twists and things that make this misleading, and therefore, the ending is quite unpredictable but wonderful. The chapters flow well and are pretty fast-paced.

As a side note, the book's title doesn't link well with the content. When I researched, it seems that the chapter/s that would have explained this were removed from the book before publication. I don't think it's an issue, but I saw it was something many people commented on, so I thought I would mention it.

I would recommend reading it without having read the reviews. They appear to be quite mixed, and I think it lends itself better to a 'blind' read before you know what will happen.

I'm really excited to read the prequel now!

A perfectly entertaining and unique read, fast paced and very intriguing! The shortness of the chapters really helped the feeling of moving fast, through the years, through moments, through memories.

I had no idea what direction the book was taking and where it was leading the reader to. Made for an addicting read. Once I’d gotten the hang of all the characters (it took me a while to distinguish between who was who with a fairly large influx of information at the beginning), it was very easy reading.

I felt it was a bit choppy and jumpy at times and maybe a little random with certain things I felt thrown into the text. The authors writing style was great though; smooth and very lyrical. I liked how it was written although I wasn’t sure about some of the content but still couldn’t put it down to see how it would end. Glad I’ve read it to see what it was all about. It was certainly unlike anything I’ve ever read before!

Obviously very late to this, but with the sequel coming out I wanted to write that I LOVED this book, cried at it, hated it and adored it and I can't wait to read the prequel.
I also can't say much else for fear of spoilers.
