The latest outing in the Rizzoli and Isles series doesn't disappoint!
Rizzoli's mother Angela is excelling herself in her role as the unofficial neighbourhood watch, ringing Jane constantly about the local problems including the mysterious Mr and Mrs Green who have moved in opposite.
Meanwhile Jane and pathologist Maura Isles are dealing with the brutal murder of ICU nurse Sonja Suarez.
As the plot develops, there are many twists and turns but, relentless as ever, Rizzoli will get to the bottom of the mystery.
Another great mystery thriller from Tess Gerritsen!
Rizzoli and Isles are back. This series is one of my favourites and I was very excited to see a long awaited new book.
Jane is investigating a burglary which ends up with the brutal murder of the home owner. Is this somehow related to a similar murder many years earlier? Also we have Rizzoli's mum, Angela, investigating her new, suspicious neighbours. They are clearly hiding something and Angela is determined to find out what.
Whilst I did enjoy this book I was halfway through when I had guessed the outcome which was slightly disappointing as I do like to be surprised. I thought this was a really good return to Rizzoli and Isles but hope in the next book we read more about Maura as I felt she was a little left out in this book.
Whilst I felt this book had lost a little of the usual spark I really did enjoy it. Maybe I expected too much from this fabulous series. I do still highly recommend it and hope we aren't waiting as long for the next book in the series.
Excellent read. As ever Tess Gerritsen doesn’t disappoint. Good to see this series continue and I hope for more in the future.
A Rizzoli & Isles book, what is not to love but there is a twist! A lot of the book is written from Angela’s point of view. Janes’ mum is a nosey neighbour and likes to keep a keen eye out on what is happening within her neighbourhood. Jane is getting frustrated with her as she has cases she is working on and doesn’t have time to listen to her mothers gossips. I mean what do mother’s know?
Thank you Netgalley & Tess Gerritsen for the advanced copy of this book.
Excellent as always! I was so excited to read the new Rizolli and Isles book and I wasn't disappointed. I liked the fact that Angela had a bigger part in this book, she's a great character. I've watched the TV show too, so now I picture them when I'm reading. Not many books and series match up but I think these do. Plenty of twists as expected, with a brilliant storyline. Would highly recommend.
Wow I love this author and especially this series . This book did not disappoint loved all the characters and how the author brought them to life.
Would highly recommend
For twenty years I've loved the Rizzoli & Isles series, this was the first time I'd been lucky enough to receive an ARC; thirteenth in the Tess Gerritsen series.
If, like me, you've watched the TV series adaptation of Rizzoli & Isles it takes a moment to readjust to their original descriptions and personalities. I'm a big fan of both the books and the show but they are two very different entities in many ways.
Perhaps my favourite part of Listen To Me is our being treated to Angela Rizzoli's storyline from first person POV. Detective Rizzoli's mother is one we'd all love to have, kindhearted and well meaning although insanely nosy with it, her subplot unfurls slowly in contrast to the murderous main event.
Aside from Angela's perspective the main story is told in third person when focusing on Rizzoli and Isles with occasional input from Amy, victim of a hit and run in the prologue.
A few well placed hints and slightly obscure facts led me to guess how everything tied into the murder investigation less than halfway into the book. I found that a little annoying as I like to be surprised, I haven't the patience to wait for the characters to realise what I already know. Thankfully the nosy neighbour situation wasn't as quickly revealed.
If you've not read Gerritsen before I highly recommend you start at the beginning with The Surgeon so as not to spoil the earlier novels. Whilst you can read almost all of the R&I stories as standalone for their mysteries, the character development is key to the series and certainly needs to be consumed in it's rightful order- previous killers are also mentioned by name frequently in later novels.
As always Gerritsen's writing is of a consistent fast pace and regardless of the easily solved mystery my adoration of the repeat characters held my interest. I can't wait to see what happens next.
A new Rizzoli and Isles thriller after all these years?
I love this series, one of only six long running ten books plus series that I've continued with. From the first gritty killer thrillers of The Surgeon and The Apprentice, the series has developed and changed but Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles are still great characters in consistently very entertaining books.
This could almost be 'Rizzoli, Isles and Rizzoli Senior', Angela, Jane's all-Italian-American Mom is a main character, with chapters from her perspective. A good nosy neighbour who knows all the streets' business. This could be seen as cosification, but it really works. I was quickly won over, after huffing and puffing that she should get her own series.
So Angela is sure she has her own case to interfere in, while Rizzoli is tracking down a killer, there's a intricately plotted murder mystery with plenty of twists right to the very end.
If you've followed the series this far, you'll really enjoy it. I would have like more of Isles (always my favourite), and more of Rizzoli and Isles' famous teamwork but this is a very entertaining book which I really enjoyed for what it is.
Thanks to Netgalley and Random House UK, Transworld
I'm already a fan of the Rizzoli & Isles series. I particularly enjoy when the author pivots away from the usual duo being at the heart of the investigation plot and focussing on one specific character. In this case Jane Rizzoli's mother Angela redefines the meaning of neighbourhood watch. Priding herself in knowing the comings and goings of her neighbours and friends and 'thinking' she knows what goes on in their lives. So when a couple move in and rebuff her offer of home-made zucchini bread she KNOWS something is amiss. Angela flags her fears to her daughter but she and Maura are already emerged in a seemingly baffling case... This is usual Gerritsen fayre: a tightly woven plot, sharp characters and some laugh out loud scenes. LOVED IT
Detective Rizzoli and Forensic Pathologist Maura Isles are investigating the murder of a nurse, someone well liked by friends and neighbors, with no suspects. As the story goes on we see the secrets behind the murder unfold and even more action close to home for the pair.
I loved the story threads running through this one and there was not a dull moment! The side characters also proved quite entertaining, particularly Jane Rizzoli's mother, Angela, and the neighbourhood friends, who kept the suspense high. I certainly didn't guess clever twists. Another one I recommend for mystery fans.
A pact made in blood ★★★☆☆
I love the Rizzoli and Isles series and it has been a long five years since the last one. Maura and Jane are brilliant characters and the plots always keep me guessing. They are also books I can re-read again and again.
In Listen to Me we have a double mystery: Jane and Maura’s case, which involves the brutal murder of a nurse and the stalking of a young girl, and Angela Rizzoli’s (Jane’s mum’s) fascination with her neighbours, including a mysterious new couple and a runaway teen.
The case of Sofía Suarez is the usual excellent Gerritsen fare. Is there a link between this murder and a crime 19 years ago? Is somebody really following Amy Antrim and was the hit and run which broke her leg really an accident? The case twists and turns as Jane and Maura hunt down another killer.
Whilst the main plot is a page turner, introducing Angela Rizzoli as an active character and developing a second parallel mystery didn’t work for me and detracted from the exciting part of the book. Angela’s parts felt unnecessary and clichéd – more part of the current OAP crime solving trope than a Gerritsen outing.
Definitely worth a read but let’s have Rizzoli and Isles back on their own again next time as they do it best.
We’re finally back with Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles as they tackle the murder of nurse Sofia Suarez. Jane’s mum, Angela Rizzoli is trying to solve her own mysteries: the hidden secrets of her neighbours. Dismissed as being a nosy old lady, Angela finds herself stumbling into something much bigger than she thought but can Jane get to her in time?
I love Tess Gerritsen! I picked her up for the first time in 2009 and I’ve been hooked ever since! This was a solid Rizzoli and Isles book, not my favourite but still entertaining. I love Maura and would have liked to see more of her in this story. Following Angela was fun, exposing the secrets of her neighbours. Jane’s case felt fairly predictable, which I found unusual, all of the clues were heavily dropped so I’d guessed what was going to happen by the 40% mark. I still enjoyed seeing it play out but this one lacked the really creepy tension that I pick up Gerritsen’s book for. I flew through this and I’m excited to pick up their next adventure, whenever that may be!
So excited to have Rizzoli and Isles back!!
This book was so fantastic i loved the investigation from the start. just when i thought i had it there would be something else and then i would have to start again with who it could be.
I love Rizzolis mum Angela she makes me laugh out loud but her sleuthing skills are pretty good too! i enjoyed reading her investigation too.
Gripping,Tension Fuelled…
The new Rizzoli and Isles thriller arrives with a bang in this wholly gripping, tension fuelled package. Why has a seemingly well thought of nurse been targeted in such a grotesque fashion? Secrets will be discovered but will it be soon enough? Twisting and turning and with a well drawn and well crafted cast of characters, an intriguing plotline and maintaining a dark undercurrent throughout this is a superlative addition to the series.
I absolutely love the early books in the Rizzoli and Isles series but this is the first Gerritsen book I've read for over 10 years. Here, Detective Jane Rizzoli and Forensic Pathologist Maura Isles are investigating the murder of well respected nurse Sofia Suarez in her own home. A parallel plot line is that of Amy, a college student who is being stalked after a hit and run accident. Gerritsen is a fantastic thriller writer, I love the pace and plot twists in her novels and the way she effortlessly brings together the different narratives in the book. I was completely gripped by this over the course of 24 hours. It was great to be back with Jane and Maura although Jane and her mother do take centre stage in Listen To Me. A great addition to this series which could also work as a standalone. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
4.5 stars
Homicide Detective Jane Rizzoli is called to the scene of a brutal murder - that of respected nurse Sofia Suarez. She was attacked in her home, seemingly at random, but when a victim has no enemies it raises more questions. Sofia's electronics are missing - and with them major clues as to who would have wanted her dead and why.
Meanwhile, Jane's mother is suspicious of her new neighbours - in a community so tight-knit, an anti-social couple stands out like a sore thumb. Angela has her suspicions, but both Jane and the local PD dismiss her as being a busybody.
This is a really good book - one that I ended up reading in the space of a day! I was vaguely aware of Rizzoli & Isles as a series, but this was my first book and a great introduction. 5*.
