“He cannot stop his lips from finding hers, like missing pieces connecting. And in every second that he knows he should stop, leave her be, he also knows he cannot possibly let her go. Because she is his. And he is hers.“

This is a solid debut novel! Ledge follows Dawsyn, a woman stuck in a poor, desolate village on a ledge of a mountain. At the beginning of every season, winged creatures swoop down and steal away humans for unknown and presumably malicious reasons.

This was definitely a unique story. It grabbed and held my attention. And the last chapter. DANG IT! I will absolutely need to get my hands on the next book when it comes because I need some FRIGGIN ANSWERS.

I struggled with reading this in the 3rd person. It didn’t flow well for me… but I didn’t stop reading because I had to know what happens, which obviously speaks to the plot. But that’s what affected my rating most.

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for allowing the chance to read this advance copy.

This book BLEW me away. I was NOT expecting this vast turn of events. Obviously I love Dawsyn and the pure sass. This originally sounded like a periless book of great demise, to my surprise it was quite more exciting. This is my fourth book of this year which I'll rate this highly, my overall rating is a VERY strong 5/5.

Well this was a pleasure to read. After reading a few fantasies one after the other, I was hoping this would be different, and it was! The FMC, Dawsyn has a lot of character development but it is across the whole book so we learn more about her with every chapter, which I loved. The MMC is not cheesy or cringey at all, which was refreshing to read a character being honest and relatable in a fantasy world.
Which takes me on to the world building. There are a few different locations throughout the story vut it is easy to follow. I would have liked a little bit more world building to feel truly immersed but there is enough to keep the story interesting. I loved that this was more plot than spice, and the 'spicy' scenes were wrote quite elegantly so it felt more like love between characters and not lust, which added to the character development for me.
The second half of the book quickened in pace and the plot twists!!
Overall, I enjoyed gerting to know this world and the characters in it. Shout out to Salem aswell, who makes a great side character. I cannot wait to read the second book, I NEED to know what happens next!

WOW THIS WAS SO GOOD

ok my favorite things from this book:

The writing! The voice! It is very active with short sentences and no purple prose and at first it felt weird and jarring BUT I THINK THATS THE POINT. It fits the characters and their voices and it fits the plot and theme of the book SO WELL. There is no time for anything but the point in Dawsyn’s world. There is no time to beat around the bush. And I ate that up!

The tropes! Ok so we all know that there are certain TikTok tropes that are just so overused and often not done that well anymore. NOT HERE. We have so many popular tropes in here and they are done so so so well and with a breath of fresh air in interpretation and execution. I can’t say enough about it. Without being spoilery, we have enemies to lovers, revolution, hidden identities, and badass FMC and it’s all done SO WELL. Im shouting at you while I type this. It was amazing and so refreshing.

The plot! That was so good. The pacing was amazing, the plot was exciting, the romance had room to breathe and we had a great mix of character and plot driven narrative.

Here’s maybe one of my most favorite pieces: there was no real hiding the ball between the characters. When they were enemies, they were honest and they knew it. When feelings developed, they said as much. The driving force of the romance was not miscommunication or anything in that vein.

And I think that does reflect on the characters. The author knew who her characters were and they stayed so true to themselves. It was amazing.

Do read this. There are sex scenes, not super explicit but not chaste. AND THE WORST CLIFFHANGER EVER. I loved it.

Oh my god that ending was a rollercoaster and I need the second one IMMEDIATELY.

Great plot. Fantasy elements. Strong women. Steamy romance. Chaos. Plot twists. This was everything I wanted and more.

I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK. If I could give it ten stars, I would. I was so intrigued from the very beginning and I just couldn't stop reading. The concept is so unique and such a cool concept, which only made the book better. Stacey McEwan did such a wonderful job writing the characters, as their development was such a joy to read. I loved Dawsyn and Ryon's characters so much and their story was just too cute. There wasn't much I didn't like about this book, honestly. The writing was good, the plot moved fast in a good way, and the character development was so fun to read. The ending though... I need the next book right now! I absolutely cannot wait to read more from this world.

Thank you NetGalley and Angry Robot for this free arc in exchange for my honest review.

I was delighted when my wish was granted to get this e-arc! Ledge is a highly anticipated book that I learned about through TikTok. The whole story appealed to me because it sounded quite unique in the fantasy genre and it did not disappoint.

It follows the story of Dawsyn, who is part of a group of people that have been left on the edge of a mountain and are sacrificed monthly to winged monsters, presumably to be eaten. It is a bare existence with very little hope and a constant need to grip onto surviving. Some parts of her journey gave me literal chills.

I really enjoyed the characters in the story, they had a good banter and there was a little bit of spice which I was invested in! There was some changes in points of view in the book which I quite liked to read the other perspective.

The ending got me and I couldn't sleep for thinking about the story and dreaming of how long I'll be waiting for book two.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for providing me with this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Stacey McEwan is a popular Tik Toker who began writing Ledge after sharing her plot ideas with followers to great reception. I didn't know this before requesting Ledge--I just ran across it and thought the premise was right up my alley--but I can understand her following. For a debut novel, LEDGE is written well and fits neatly into the current YA genre and shows that McEwan has great potential as a writer, even if it could use a little more editing at times.

In another context this review may sound disparaging, but I promise I mean this genuinely: If you're looking for a fantasy romance that has simple, YA-like world-building, and reads as thought it might have started as ACOTAR fan fiction, this book is for you. It is exactly what I expected and wanted out of this book, and McEwan delivered.

It's not without its issues, of course. With the simplicity of the Ledge and the people's conflict with the Glacians, a few things are hard to explain (like how Dawsyn became such an accomplished fighter when she's spent most of her life chopping wood to survive the cold), and there are definitely points in the book where things feel unrealistic and overly convenient. My biggest gripe however is with the presumably gay (possibly nonbinary?) character who is written to embody the flamboyant gay male stereotype. I'm not sure if McEwan is queer herself (a quick glance at her Tik Tok reveals a series made about her husband), but regardless, she is not a gay man and therefore it really skeeves me out to see her write them in such a stereotypical way. I am all for people writing diverse characters, but absolutely not if those characters are going to follow age-old tropes like the gay bff. Honestly, this book was a solid three stars for me if it weren't for this character. Gay people don't exist as comic relief.

Part of me wishes this was a standalone so that McEwan could try again with another series that is more thought through, but alas. I won't be finishing the Ledge trilogy but I might be convinced to check out future books of hers.

Thank you to NetGalley, AngryRobot, and Stacey McEwan for the advanced e-copy in exchange for an honest review!

I received an eARC of this book and I was super excited to immerse in a new fantasy world. Until a day of reckoning, I was delighted about how raw and dark the story is. Dawsyn was unexpected, finally a badass main character. I enjoyed the author's writing style. And with an entry of Glacians, it happened.
Things took place too fast and didn't make any sense. Worldbuilding and explanations were missing. Many situations were unrealistic. For example, Dawsyn despite malnutrition and weariness with an axe in her hand defeated warriors (really fast and easy) who were invincible. She acted like a wild animal and managed many bold and stupid situations when she should die.
There was not any space for the development of characters. And I am really sad about that because this story could be really good without all of that cliché. The series has a big potential, but the author needs to stop playing a safe game.
I like when things go wrong, plans are ruined and things are not like they seem. I know this is mostly about romance. But some spicy scenes are not everything.
Who is looking for a book, where are sexy main characters and one of them has an impressive wingspan, Ledge is for you. If you are more like me and you need a well-built world with a highly-developed magic system and realistic characters, this is not for you.

Thank you Angry Robots for this opportunity.

Ledge is a really good fantasy debut from McEwan. Twice a year, the head of each household on the Ledge, a frozen desolate village, stand before their homes where some of them are selected as sacrifices by the winged creatures that keep them captive. Dawsyn, a feisty female who lives alone, is carried off by the creatures to their kingdom of Glacia. There, she discovers the reason why they take humans and decides to try and escape and free the people of the Ledge.

Dawsyn is a good character, very strong and incredibly rash at times. She refuses help, preferring to face her dangers alone. Ryon is a kind of text book hero/love interest for her and at times I wished there was a bit more to him. That said, Ryon is the kind of hero who speaks to the NA fantasy romance readers and I can imagine he'll be well received by the target audience.

There were plenty of twists and turns along the way. I had an idea what was going to happen in this one. If you love the NA fantasy romance genre and can't wait for the next instalments from FBAA or ACOTAR then this will certainly appeal to you as a decent filler. I'll definitely be reading the next one after this.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in return for an honest review.

The concept of the ledge is a refreshing one. The story is good. But there is just no time for story or characters to develop. I speed read the book until Dawsyn and Ryon reach down to the village. But after that it just dragged.

Scenes shift too abruptly. The relationship between Dawsyn and Ryon seems too fast. The magic system is just there without any knowledge of what it exactly is and what can it do other than locking and unlocking the prison doors.

In short, things just happen and we are just supposed to deal with it without any proper explanation.

Thank you to Stacey McEwan, Angry Robot Publishing, and NetGalley for the eARC of this book.

Dawsyn, is an ax-wielding badass who knows how to survive, and how to fight. She comes from a line of strong women doing what they need to survive on the Ledge. When she is selected at one of the seasonal abductions by the Glacians her choices become die, or fight back.

We get enemies to lovers, adventure, magic, a winged love interest.

This book has captivated and captured me. I don't want to rush the author, but I also want books 2 and 3 of this trilogy *immediately*

I enjoyed this tale!! It had adventure and heartache and a driving factor of revenge.

Our FMC is driven by survival. That is, until she meets our MMC and is driven by learning the truth and seeking freedom. A great story with twists and turns.

The story was unique in its telling and held my attention throughout. Pace was amazing.

Some things that irritated me were Ryon calling Dawsyn “girl” the entire time. Like once… maybe twice is fine but it didn’t jive well. Like how old was he that she was a “girl” to him? And if he was old… I’m not going there.
I also didn’t enjoy the POV switch where the reader had to reread to figure out whose pov we were reading. Then the switching from first to third person writing kind of irked me as well.

All in all, it was a solid 3.5 fantasy read with a smidgeon of romance intertwined. Spiciness was a 1/5 with some fade to blacks.

I received an ARC from netgalley for review.

I received an arc of this book (thanks Angry Robots!) And while I was super excited for it... I'm not going to lie, I struggled.
I read a lot of fantasy but I really struggled with the writing from the beginning. Everything felt very rushed, and the enemies to lovers felt a lot more insta-lovey to me. I felt like I struggled to understand the creatures, and anything about what the characters looked like. There were some good twists, but the girl felt a bit too good to be true considering where she had grown up and the lack of all basics that she had.

Goodness, there is so much to say about this book. Firstly, it was so amazing, refreshing, such a new idea, I am just in awe.

I randomly found this book scrolling Goodreads coming soon section and read the synopsis and was very interested. By chance I was able to receive and ARC of this from Netgalley and it was like the best day every!!!

I started reading this just last night, I stayed up as long as I possibly could because I didn't want to put it down. I don't want to spoil this book for anyone, but just know this is a 5 star read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I cannot wait for the next one (which there better be, because that cliff hanger!!!!!)

Def one of my top books of the year.

I dont do booktok and i knew nothing about this book/author. I requested an arc of this on a whim, kinda delayed reading itand now, having finished it in a mere 20ish hours, I am deeply IN.

Dawsyn has lived her life on the ledge, an inescapable, brutal slice of land on a frigid mountainside, accesible only to the winged monsters that terrorize the inhabitants. When the oppurtunity to escape with one of said monsters presents itself, she fights for her survival and that of her community, while learning how they arrived there at the beginning.

Dawsyn is a badass, the story is good, and i really, really like the writing style? What a good debut. I want to learn how to throw axes now.

Thanks a ton, netgalley and angry robot for giving me an ARC of this book. I really, really enjoyed it and cant wait to read the rest.

Ledge is a NA fantasy about a woman who chooses to escape in hopes of saving her people from a cold, mountain prison.

The book started off wonderful giving you an idea what it's like living on Ledge. Where no one can escape because there is a chasm, so they are basically trapped. The people have to fight for rations and live off of chopping wood. Every so often creatures called Glaciens take human sacrifices. I liked the actual plot of the book, the idea was fun and interesting.

What I didn't like:
• there were multiple chapters that contributed nothing to the story.

•the way one character kept calling another "girl" even after being asked to stop.

•the most important dislike for me: a character who was written as nonbinary ( after being asked if they were a man or woman) allowing another character to call them "he". This is the passage for clarification: "Call me esra, call me darling, call me bitch for all I care...but never lower me to such mundane names as a man or woman. For the purposes of our impending friendship though I suppose you can say he when you must if only for a lack of a better word".

I feel like that can be seen as insensitive and give permission for the wrong language to be used.

I've often found that books considered to be a "tik tok sensation" are lacking in the writing quality and editing departments, and Ledge was no different. I ultimately gave up about halfway through and did not finish this book.

I absolutely flew through this book!

Dawsyn is such an amazing character. Strong, resilient, able to fend for herself. The complete opposite of a damsel in distress and I loved her entirely.

Raised on the Ledge, no choice but to be prey to the Glacians that come to take away new people at the beginning of every season. Dawsyn looses her entire family before being chosen herself, stolen away to the Glacian palace. Dawsyn must fight for her life, alongside the half-breed Ryon, and discovering the terrible secrets kept from those on the Ledge along the way. A steamy new adult fantasy novel that blew me away!

This book is filled with a wonderfully diverse cast of characters, a brilliant plot line and one chilling plot twist after another. Stacey McEwan has done an incredible job for her debut book and I cannot wait for everyone to read this stunning book!
