Based on Chinese mythology, this was an incredibly unique story which, even though it is classed as YA, for the most part didn't feel as such. In only 450 ish pages, this is one of the most jam packed novels I have read for a while - to the point where I felt like it could have been a standalone novel. I usually find the love triangles annoying, but in this situation, it did not make up the majority of the narrative and I actually really enjoyed it.
There was so much culture included in this story which added to the overall environment and reading experience. It felt like I was learning something about Chinese tradition in the form of a fantasy novel. Add this to the world involving different kingdoms ruled overall by the tyrannical Celestial Emperor (and dragons!) there was so much going on. The descriptions were beautiful and attracted the senses, the experience of which was made so much better in the audiobook.
There were so many wonderful characters - Xingyin was a strong female MC who knew what she wanted and yet seemed to struggle with her self confidence. Then we have the love interests in Prince Liwei, a golden retriever of a character and Captain Wenzhi who was a strong and ruthless man who will go to lengths to deceive and kidnap to achieve his goals.
Overall, this was a fabulous read and I loved every moment of this world and story!
This was a really good start to a series and I'm really looking forward to seeing where book two goes.
Really liked this, I liked it so much I ended up getting the book and the sequel and also getting the audible version of the sequel as well. I think both the story and the way it's narrated really work.
I found this to be an amazing and interesting read! And the cover is so lovely!! Looking forward to the author's next story!
Im stuck between a 3 and 4 ⭐️ rating. So I will go for a 3.5 for now.
I wanted more action in this book. Whether it was fighting or the romance. The banter was ok. There were parts that felt quick and other parts that really dragged for me. What I did like was the world building and the character development for Xingyin.
Thank you NetGalley and publishers for this ebook for an honest review.
Sadly I didn't enjoy this one, it wasn't really for me. I slugged through it but it never really gripped me.
This was cute and as someone who doesn't know anything about the source material/original myth this interpretation worked really well. The story felt magical but very young adult and I think this is supposed to be adult oder new adult. The protagonist is old enough to fall outside young adult territory but the story itself and especially love story were definitely suitable for young teens. The voice of the narrator was okay but sometimes it felt like she was whispering and I had to constantly adjust the volume which was a bit annoying especially when you're prepping a meal or something and your fingers are sticky. Had to rewind a couple of times cause I just couldn't understand a word. I generally prefer audiobooks without whispering or shouting so adjustments to the volume aren't necessary at all.
This was absolutely incredible. It’s hard to believe that this was a debut because it was just so well written and well put together.
Fantastical, magical and perfectly captivating. I loved the epic scale of the novel, and the characters themselves.
This was a captivating read blending the best aspects of a quest narrative, a coming of age story and an enchanting romance. The prose was really lyrical without veering too far into poetic, which I appreciated and the plot was really intricate, with lots happening throughout. I enjoyed the magical elements of the story and the political machinations of the various courts was well done. My only criticism really is that I felt the characters were a little bit flat at times and I'm not sure whether this was because so much was happening that it was a bit difficult to connect to them. Overall though, I really enjoyed this book and will be picking up the sequel soon.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This book is as beautiful as the front cover. Everything about it is magical and mythical and it didn't stop from the first page to the last. I listened to the Audio at the same time as the ebook and I adored the narrator Natalie Naudus, she definitely fitted the story well. I knew very little of the story going in and I had not heard the story of the moon goddess and Chang'e at all. Xingjin was the best MC and relationship she had with Prince Liwei had me wishing they would just get together already! Beautiful writing and world building every character is easily pictured in your head, even the minor characters are described well. Loved every minute of it
Daughter of the Moon Goddess has something of the Poppy War in... not as bloody and with more romance.
A very enjoyable read with a travel among gods, powers and of course the daughter of th moon goddess trying to make herself a place in the world and to figure out who she is and who she wants to be. Waiting for the follow up, even thought this book on its own is holding on it's feet.
I received this book as audiobook from NetGalley, all opinions are my own.
This was such a beautifully written book! It was based around the Chinese moon goddess mythology which was great as I’ve read a few Greek mythology inspired books recently so it was a nice change. I really enjoy all the twists that authors put on their books based on legends. I loved the female main character and her fierceness and fight. It was a story full of jam packed action and excitement. Fully recommend.
Yes this took me quite a while to read. When I first started I lost interest at 4%
Not because it wasn’t good but because I wasn’t in the mood. Hence why I only picked it up again after a few other books and then came back.
Shockingly I had no issues this time and restarted from the beginning.
The writing is very lyrical and similar in a way to a Chinese ballad. It certainly feels like an epic poem. In that way it did sometimes feel quite removed from the characters and their thoughts and feelings but it got better as time went on. I didn’t really enjoy the time jumps but I guess they were needed. I feel like the content of this one book could have been over two or three books by any other author.
Also there was so much angst which c’mon Chinese fantasy I’m living for it.
The twists weren’t that twisty but I still enjoyed it.
I do wish I knew how out our mc actually was as I found the time jumps and vagueness slightly confusing, mainly why she even assumed her father to be alive as I was like obvs he’s dead as I thought she was like 80 years old by then because they’re immortals even if they’re young haha
So yes overall really enjoyed this and the narrator who I often see reading Asian fantasy did a great job.
Thank-you to netgalley for the eARC of the audiobook!
Also shout out to the people in forbidden planet who know the author seeing her book, realising she wrote a book and getting exciting about it. You were super annoying people but I appreciated how stoked you were for the author.
I absolutely adored this mix of mythology and celestial magic. As someone who appreciates the magic of nature, I found every page completely heartwarming, empowering and endearing.
The character development was done so well and I really became invested in the lives of the main characters.
For anyone who is looking for a book containing a female main character who is a complete badass, this is for you!
"I would not settle for less than I could give"
I enjoyed my reading experience of this as it was easy to pick up and listen to with accessible and engaging writing but upon reflection, there isn't a lot that stands out in the story.
The plot line is rather simple but I did enjoy following our characters through their journey but I didn't relate to them the way I would hope because I feel they are written rather two dimensional and don't have a lot of character development through the book or a lot of depth to them regarding their past.
I think if the book had been shorter, I could have still appreciated the pretty writing and accepted the lack of other factors but considering its long length, I needed more to enjoy it as I hoped.
Regarding the audiobook, I enjoyed the narrator and definitely think it makes a longer book more accessible. But there was nothing that made this audiobook in particular stand out as a favourite. Also there were times the narrator would say words or end of sentences much louder than the rest and it would have me scrambling for my phone to turn it down. My poor volume buttons feel violated after the experience.
- thanks to netgalley and the publisher for providing me with the ARC in exchange for an early review.
I had a few download issues with the book and by the time it was sorted, the file had unfortunately been achieved. Happy to re-review if it becomes available again.
God this was wonderful! The audiobook was so beautifully narrated, it just really added to the magic of the story. I'm so obsessed with the characters, the setting, everything!! I can't wait for book 2!
Wow this was a fantastic story. I just loved it from the very start. It was such an amazing story-line that I had to binge read it. Although this book is a historical fiction it also had this wonderful fantasy element to it with the dragons and magic. It was definitely packed full of action that took me on a thrilling roller coaster ride. I listened to the audiobook and just loved the narrator who really brought out the brilliant sense of atmosphere and tension that just gripped me and held tight. I loved all the twists and turns in the book it really had me at the edge of my seat. I just couldn't put it down. I was actually upset when it ended as I could of continued reading this book forever. I adored the authors style of writing and I couldn't help myself as I became emotionally involved with the amazing characters. I really can't recommend this book enough to all those historical and fantasy fan out there. I can't wait to read more from this fantastic author.
Only the highest of praises goes out to the author and publishing team for creating this epic story that you will just lose yourself in.
