I LOVED the miniaturist, so when I found out there was a second book coming out I was very excited. It did not disappoint. My favourite book so far this year
One of the most hotly anticipated novels of the year has arrived – and it doesn’t disappoint.
Fast forward 18 years on from The Miniaturist and we return to Amsterdam where we meet Nella’s niece Thea at a pivotal time in her life. The once-opulent house on the Herengracht is now down-at-heel and getting shabbier by the day as the occupants are fast becoming insolvent.
Nella has a plan to net Thea a wealthy husband which should solve all of their financial woes whilst securing Thea’s future within Amsterdam’s elite society, however true love inevitably gets in the way. Nella, Otto and Theo each have secrets to keep and problems to navigate which put almost irrevocably more strain upon the family dynamics.
Until a familiar looking parcel is left on the doorstep…
If you liked The Miniaturist, I’m sure you’ll enjoy returning to the household to see just how Johannes and Marin’s legacies have played out.
Holy Shizz I was not prepared for this, the first chapter is everything!! Albeit only the first chapter it has already piqued my interest and I cannot wait to immerse myself into the world of Thea, Nella, Cornelia and Otto. Eighteen years later we are back with Nella but now Thea is the protagonist and we experience the world through her words. When and why did Nella become so cold? I am dying to find out!!
Now that I have read the entire thing, twice, I am even more in love with the Brandts. Jessie Burton can do no wrong in my eyes, and this novel is no exception, it is superb. It is every bit enchanting and captivating from the first page. We discover how the family have fallen into both financial difficulties and societal ruin after the death of Marin and Johannes 18 years earlier. Yet Nella has taken charge, discovered she has the strength to provide for her family both financially and emotionally, as the miniaturist said 'Every woman is the architect of her own fortune', and Nella has done just that!
I really hope there is a third novel and excited to see what Jessie Burton writes next!
Thanks to Pan Macmillan and Netgalley for the excerpt in exchange for my honest review.
Intriguing opening chapter. Would love to read the book when it becomes available. I feel that a reread of The Miniaturist is necessary to refresh my memory of the characters and original story.
I love Jesse Burton's writing and rated The Miniaturist 5 stars when I first read it in 2015. I'm excited for a sequel!
An interesting and entertaining opening chapter. Thea is turning 18 and goes downstairs for her birthday breakfast. The characters are introduced and it sets out a few hints where the novel will head. Looking forward to the complete novel!
This was a sampler chapter. I enjoyed the sampler and look forward to reading the full novel when it’s released.
Utterly enticing teaser sample returning us to the world of The Miniaturist. All I can say, is more please!!!!
This sequel to The Miniaturist takes us back to 16th century Amsterdam where Thea has just turned 18 and longs for more than her close and sheltered life is offering. Her family want to see her married and settled, yet Thea wants more and has been secretly meeting with Walter at the playhouse. This is a rich and satisfying follow up weaves around the incredible city setting and there are various threads and subplots throughout. the Miniaturist is less of a feature than I'd have hoped, and yet this beautifully crafted novel still immerses us into family life in a fascinating period in history.
A fantastic book to follow The Miniaturist. It is an insight into the life of Thea an 18 year old in 1705, an eye opening coming of age story which will pull at your heart strings
I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS BOOK, IT'S ONE OF MY MOST ANTICIPATED READS OF THE YEAR! I've accessed the first extract and it was so comforting to be back reading about these characters I loved. I cannot wait to read more!
The House of Fortune is a sequel Jessie Burton's previous novel 'The Miniaturist'. Protagonist Thea has turned 18 and wishes to run headfirst into adulthood, however she begins to learn things about her family she wishes she hadn't.
This first chapter extract does an exceptional job of setting up for the novel ahead, As usual Burton's writing is immersive and rich. The attention to detail is perfection. I can not wait for this book to come out.
Read the first chapter of this follow-up to The Miniaturist, which is one of my all time favourite books. Really looking forward to reading the full version when it comes out.
The House of Fortune is set in 1705 when Thea Brandt turns 18. It is also the day her mother Marin died. Nella, her aunt and her father Otto try desparately to guarantee her future but times are not going well for them.
Ahhh this was such a great sampler, I can’t wait for my copy to arrive so that I can continue the story.
Thanks you to @NetGalley and Picador for the opportunity to read the first chapter of The House of Fortune, Jessie Burton's much anticipated sequel to the wonderful The Miniaturist.
Thea is Marin's daughter and the book starts with her turning eighteen. I imagine the book will go forward but also fill in some of the gaps since the end of the first novel.
Beautifully written, as expected, and very much something to look forward to.
I can't wait!
Having avidly read The Miniaturist a number of times, I couldn't wait to get into this exclusive extract. And it did not disappoint. Beautifully written, richly detailed and engaging, the only disappointment is having to wait for the full novel! Roll on July!!!!
Can’t wait for the rest of it!! Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the sampler.

What a teaser! I was given an extract to read of the much anticipated sequel to the Miniature by Jessie Burton: The House of Fourtune and it certainly does not disappoint! As Thea celebrates her 18th birthday surrounded by he father and aunts, she finds herself suffocated by the endless secrets they harbour about the past, her own mother who died in childbirth and their plans to marry her off to secure financial security. Thea can only think of freedom and love. She craves so much more from life and yearns to return to her secret love at the theatre - Walter. Thea's family have secured her a place at the coveted ball of the season, which promises to change Thea's life for good or bad. With family secrets threatening to burst to the surface and a reappearance of the miniaturist, this promises to be an explosive sequel and one of the biggest reads of 2022. Not to be missed. #thehouseoffortune #jessieburton #netgalley
When I finished the Miniaturist I was almost a bit disappointed as it felt like just the opening chapter of the story, I'm so pleased to read the sequel! I'm now a die-hard Jessie Burton fan and this opening sampler chapter has just cemented that even further, I'll be buying the full book for sure.
A really intriguing opening chapter that has sent me back to The Miniaturist to re-read it before The House of Fortune is published.
This is just the opening chapter of Jessie Burton’s sequel to the excellent “The Miniaturist”, but what an intriguing start it is. We meet Thea, daughter of Marin, on the morning of her eighteenth birthday, surrounded by a few – though of course not all – of the characters we came to know in the earlier work. She is eager for adventure and I’m intrigued to see where the story will take her when the full book is released.
My thanks to the author, NetGalley, and the publisher for the arc to review.
