Extremely informative book on regional gardening! Well written and easy to make a plan to allow for optimal growing.
If you live in a desert area, Southwest Fruit & Vegetable Gardening will be your gardening bible. Everything you need is here but tailored for a desert climate.
While the book says it only covers Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico, it also applies here in the California desert too. There is a section in the front where you select your climate based on weather in your area. Once you know your climate, specific varieties for your area are listed for each fruit, vegetable, and herb.
Overall, Southwest Fruit & Vegetable Gardening is a great choice for desert gardeners. 5 stars!
Thanks to Cool Springs Press and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Southwest Fruit Vegetable Gardening, 2nd Edition is a reformatted and updated 2nd edition of the region specific gardening guide by Jacqueline Soule. Originally released in 2014, this edition is due out in March 2022 from Quarto on their Cool Springs imprint. It's 240 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.
This is an accessibly written information dense regional gardening guide specifically aimed at gardeners in the southwestern areas of the USA: Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and environs. The information is arranged in a logical manner with chapters arranged thematically. An introduction covers the benefits and not insignificant challenges gardeners living in these areas experience, and is followed by: growing edible crops, soil building and composition, planning and planting, and growth & maintenance. The chapters are thorough and contain solid recommendations with both specific cultivars as well as general criteria for variety selection and culture. Cultivars are referred to by botanical (Latin) nomenclature as well as common name to facilitate sourcing and reduce mistaken IDs.
The book is -full- of full color photographs for inspiration and clarity. The book includes a glossary of terms and cross referenced index.
Four stars. This would be a good choice for public and school libraries, gardening groups, community/allotment gardens, suburban gardeners, homeowners, etc. There's a similarity of format and presentation between all the books in this series which makes them easy to use and reference no matter where readers are gardening.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Excellent information for this who live in the southwest and want to plant fruits and vegetables.
Gardening is all about enjoying nature. It is the perfect fun activity for kids, parents, and grandparents.
If you love to garden, Jacqueline Soule's book is a must read. It is written for gardening in Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico, but is adaptable to other regions. Even if vegetable gardening is not for you, this picturesque book has a treasure trove of information on beautiful trees and bushes.
Gardening is not just for spring and summer. The author shares a variety of vegetables and herbs that can be grown during the colder months. Souls provides a list of tools, soil information, a guide for picking plants and seeds. Additionally included are comprehensive tips on controlling pests, weeds, proper watering, and maintaining the plants. Soule instructs on growing gorgeous vegtables, herbs, nuts, and fruit in step-by-step detail. The book will be published March 15, 2022.
