This is suuuch amazing debut novel! I would never say that this is author's first book. This mystery is cozy, intriguing and you can easily read it in one evening. I absolutely loved Molly Gray!
Easy 4 stars from me! And can't wait to read next books by the author!
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me woth an audiobook in exchange for honest review!
Much like Molly, this quirky murder mystery about a maid who struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others was deceiving.. such a simple cover, but inside hides everything I've ever wanted in a book. It made me laugh, cry, and really touched my heart ❤
Absolutely brilliant!
I’ve been wanting to read this book and it definitely didn’t disappoint.
Molly is a maid at a posh hotel and takes pride in her work.
She’s recently lost her Gran and is still struggling to live without her.
An unscrupulous character takes advantage of Molly’s good nature and she ends up in deep trouble.
This is a heartwarming book that I loved for so many reasons.
I highly recommend this book.
This is one of THOSE books. You know the one. The one with all the hype and buzz for months before it’s publication. I remember the news breaking that this book had its movie rights snapped up (Universal) and Florence Pugh has announced that she would star and produce the movie.
So, of course, like most book that has this level of buzz, you can either be very excited for it or very wary. I think we’ve all been stung by the hype train once or twice the past few months. I know I have (I mean, have you not seen my DNFs or my 1 or 2 stars reviews of late?). But there was something about The Maid that made me very intrigued about it.
So yes, I managed to get my hands on an eProof (via NetGalley. Thank you UK publisher), but I was so intrigued, I actually bought the audiobook as well. It’s very rare I do this.
Molly is a maid at the Regency Grand Hotel In New York. She’s invisible to the world. I mean, who pays attention to a maid?
But when Molly finds the body of Mr Black, an infamous guest at the hotel, very dead in his bed, Molly finds her quiet life thrown under a spotlight and she sees that life isn’t as easy mess to clean as she begins to look for the truth. Who would look twice at a maid, after all?
I’m going to admit that, going into this, I wasn’t exactly sure what I was getting myself into. I didn’t know if it was going to be more of the cosy or more dark and edgy. But, once I found my footing (will explain why in a moment), this sits more on the cosy side. It’s a fun and easy read. A whodunnit which, on the surface, looks quite simple to us readers but not to Molly.
Why not to Molly, I hear you ask. Well, this comes back to my footing, and that takes a little while – a few chapters. Molly sees the world in a different way to everyone else. To me (any many other readers), Molly comes across as someone who is on the autistic spectrum and, because of this, we see how she treats people and how they treat her in return. To most readers, we see quickly how some characters treat Molly and how some see Molly as dumb, stupid or naïve and I found this quite upsetting as I grew to like Molly hugely and felt very protective of her within the first few chapters.
The main chunk of the story takes place over the working week (Monday to Friday), but we see tiny memories of Molly with her beloved grandmother (and there are times Molly would say “That’s what Gran would say” that might irritate readers), which gives us more insight to Molly as a whole.
I keep saying this is more on the cosy murder mystery side of crime, but this book has have a dark edge to it as it does touch on some heavy subjects, but due to Molly, these are touched upon quote lightly.
I do have one big issue, which I think most readers will be annoyed over: the epilogue. Now, I’m not going to touch on why this will annoy some readers (spoilers), but some people might feel a tad cheated about what happens/is revealed.
Not sure how to finish this review, but I devoured this book very quickly and I think Molly will linger in my brain for a little while…
***Please note that requested audiobook for review. However, audiobook was approved and achieved on the same day so this is my review of the audiobook I bought/preordered via Audible UK***
The audio was crisp and joyous to listen to. The narrator did an awesome job of relaying the stories and the characters very fluently. The story revolves Molly, a maid in a grand hotel who is proud and confident of what she does and does her work with fervent passion. She one day gets trapped into a murder case and how she comes out of it is a story to be read and enjoyed!
Molly works at a hotel as a maid where one day she discovers the dead body of one of the guests, a rich old man was he murdered or did he simply die?
This book is more of a character story with some.mystery than it is a thriller however I did enjoy this book. The main character Molly reads like perhaps someone on the spectrum and those around her mainly treat her with disrespect and look down upon her which bothered me but I did understand that it was part of the storyline and not meant to cause offence. Molly was easy taken avatanage of in situations because of her kind nature and her lack of understanding of people wrong doing her around her and there was times I wanted to slap some of the people in this book. The overall mystery was a predictable one but this story was more about Molly finding friendship and found family and even a romance with a group of people she could trust.
Thank you for sending me this copy, however, I actually paid for an audio copy a couple of weeks ago.
I really enjoyed Molly the Maid’s story, she was quirky and direct, took pride in everything she did, and the loneliness in her character was well written. I found I felt sorry for her a lot in the story, but later discovered that she was intellectually able to cover things up that didn’t seem to meet with her character dialogue earlier in the story. All in all an enjoyable read, quite a good whodunnit. 3.5 stars.
I enjoyed this book. The main character was endearing and I enjoyed reading from her perspective. The main character is clearly written as someone who has autism or at least autistic traits like not being able to read social cues. This wasn’t actually mentioned throughout the book and her coworkers would refer to her as ‘weird’ or strange, which I didn’t like. The whole book basically relies on her characters naivety. I did enjoy the ending.
A gentle murder mystery with some lovably kind main characters.
“I am your maid. I know so much about you. But when it comes down to it: what is it that you know about me?
Molly Grey is a young hardworking and diligent young maid working at The Grand Regency Hotel. She is a perfectionist and it passionate about her work . We get the impression that Molly is somewhat different and struggles in social situations and often does not grasp everyday humour or sarcasm . During her daily cleaning routine she becomes aware that some of her guests have a lot more going on behind closed doors. When Molly is falsely accused of a crime she didn’t commit her unassuming loyal friends come to her rescue .
The love and bond between Grandmother and Granddaughter is wonderfully portrayed.
Molly reminded me a little of Eleanor Oliphant. This was very entertaining on Audio .
The Maid by Nita Prose is a fascinating and carefully written mystery about a maid who becomes embroiled in a murder at the hotel where she works. Molly is 25 and leads a regimented, orderly life as a maid in a local boutique hotel. She is polite and kind, but has difficulty reading social cues and navigating relationships. She now lives by herself, but was raised by her grandmother who has recently passed. I loved the precise and delicate language Nita Prose uses throughout the novel. It perfectly illustrated Molly's character.
Towards the beginning of the novel, while working Molly discovers one of the hotel's frequent visitors is dead. We are introduced to a colorful cast of characters making this mystery really intriguing. We're not sure who to trust, but the pieces slowly start coming together and we get a fuller picture of Molly's life. I especially loved getting to know Molly and learning about her tender relationship with her grandmother. This was such a well-written, thoughtful and intriguing mystery. I listened to the audiobook which was masterfully narrated by actress Lauren Ambrose.
Thank you HarperCollins and NetGalley for providing this audiobook ARC in exchange for an honest review.
"My truth is not the same as yours because we don’t experience life in the same way."
This was Molly mantra for her life. She is alone in this world that is so different from hers. She is my fave character all time. As a mother of an autisic child I was familiar with her thought and fears, feelings. So innocent and so sincere that hurts.
"I’ll never understand it—why people find the truth more shocking than lies."
She was never pretending till the time she had to safe her life and clear her name. She did such an amazing job that I was proud, so proud.
"People are a mystery that can never be solved."
It is impossible to know things without experience and unfortunately she has to carry so much on her own. But once again she went over and was brilliant.
"One thing I’ve learned in my business is that you can hide dirt for a while, but at some point, it all comes to the surface."
She is a maid but she is so the best in her proffesion. She has rules and she is great at execute them. It is natural for her, she needs them.
"Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end."
Loved this book, very funny with a good number of twists and turns. Not all the characters are lovable and some are very naive but that adds to the humour. Well written and good pacing of the story
Molly the Maid finds great comfort in things being done properly. Her attention to detail and adherence to the rules make her excellent at her job but her vulnerabilities can lead to her being used and taken advantage of. At 25, Molly loses her grandmother and is all alone in the world, trying to navigate situations that she doesn’t really understand. When she discovers a dead body in one of the hotel rooms she is cleaning her life starts to get even more complicated. She must learn who to trust and who is only out for themselves.
Molly is a wonderful protagonist I loved right from the start. She tries to find her way through life using the advice her gran taught her despite being teased and ostracised for her differences.
The whodunit aspect of this book skit me on my toes, but more important was Molly’s development as she finds which of the people in her life are there for her when she needs them most.
Beautifully written and unputdownable, this book is perfect for fans of Eleanor Oliphant and celebrates our differences.
I listened to the audiobook version and the narrator was brilliant and it really felt like Molly was telling us her story.
Molly Maid, the best Maid in the world. I just loved this character- so honest, so kind, so wonderful! I hated the way she was treated and used by others, she deserved better. The whole murder mystery was well woven and the ending did not disappoint! Fabulous story. I listened to this as an audiobook and found the narrator really brought the characters to life. The story whizzed by.
This audiobook should have DO NOT MISS stamped all over it! It’s just a wonderful joyous listen! Narrated by Lauren Ambrose - what a performance! “I’m Molly the Maid. You don’t see me, I’m invisible but I see you and all you leave behind”.
25 year old Molly Gray was raised by her gran and is missing her terribly and is on a spectrum and cannot always interpret the intentions of others so she relies on the proverbs her Gran taught her to see her through everyday life. Molly works as a maid at the Regency Grand Hotel when the body of Mr Black is discovered dead in his bedroom and Molly becomes No 1 prime suspect in this gentle cosy crime murder mystery. This audio book was so vivid for me - I loved the cinematic quality and feel of the book and could imagine the movie and adorable Molly Gray as the star! One thing is for certain Nita Prose was ‘maid’ for writing! Thank you to Netgalley and to Harper Collins for my treasured copy of this book.
