When Mack is offered a place in a competition where fourteen competitors hide in an old amusement park, with a life-changing amount of money as the prize, she says yes.
Everyone is determined to win, but as the days goes on and people begin to go missing, Mack starts to realise that there is a darker side to the competition.
As the only living member of her family, Mack is a survivor, but this might be something not even she can escape.
Can Mack figure out what is really going on at the amusement park before it's too late?
Going into this book, I was intrigued by the thriller/mystery element, and in that aspect I thought it did quite well.
Mack was a likeable and relatable protagonist. She had been through something extremely traumatic that affected her deeply and influenced her interactions with the other competitors.
There were a lot of different points of view in this book, and I felt they switched abruptly at times. I also struggled to differentiate between them at the beginning.
Other than Mack, my favourite characters were Ava, Brandon and Legrand.
I would have liked some of the characters to have been more fleshed out, as there are some that I don't remember anything about and that were very flat and two-dimensional.
The setting of the abandoned amusement park was very secluded and I thought the author did a good job of making a creepy, and at times, chilling atmosphere.
The plot was interesting and held my attention, but the pacing felt off and there were times when the book fell flat for me.
Overall, this was a mixed read.
This was dark and spooky in all the right places. An interesting story, which worked well. I found myself totally absorbed in the story.
I really enjoyed this romp of a horror thriller! It gave me pretty much what I was expecting.
A competition with a $50,000 prize, and all you have to do is hide in an abandoned amusement park for 7 days? The 14 competitors all have very different reasons for entering the competition - fame, revenge, regret, atonement, of course the money...and what a surprise it all goes spectacularly wrong.
I liked the writing and the pacing, some characters were great whereas some were very one dimensional - it reminded me of the set up of a horror movie.
Well deserved 4 stars!
This was a really atmospheric read. Spooky in all of the right ways and i'm not big on reading anything that will keep me from sleeping.
Some of it was predictable but not in a terrible way. If it's not dumbed down, this would make a great film.
This had me hooked on the mystery, tension, and also the characters.
Plot - Great idea and I loved the build up with all the tension, both before and during the competition. However, I felt the horror element could have been explained better.
Writing Style - Long chapters that flit about, but weirdly it didn't break my reading flow.
Characters - There were a lot to keep track of, but I liked how they were portrayed. I was intrigued by Mack even when she was annoying, but I did want to know more about others pasts - especially Ava and LeGrand, to see what made them the way they were.
Believability - I thought the idea was clever and liked the attitudes and decisions made along the way. But again, I wanted a bit more background on some characters to fully flesh them out.
Pace - It had an initial bang, then a slow start that ramped up nearer the end.
Ending - I enjoyed the competition ending, but felt that the "seekers" part needed more information and was left a bit open (but I don't think there's a sequel planned).
Hide is a fast-paced and atmospheric thriller that will have you rushing to turn the pages. The setting is suitably creepy but I did feel fourteen was too large for the cast of characters. An enjoyable and heart-pounding read.
With thanks to the publishers and author.
his was a couldn't finish book for me. It didn't hold my interest. So a.DNF.
This book wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but I did enjoy it. Having read some negative reviews about it previously I wasn’t too sure. Would definitely recommend you give it a go. I did find it would probably be more suited to YA than adult though.
I didn’t feel the need for romance in this book. I feel like this was not a realistic setting for live. Also, some of the characters deserved better than they got. Overall, I enjoyed this and will look forward to this authors future work.
This was an enjoyable read that was action packed. If you like books like The Hunger Games and shows like Squid Game, I think there’s a good chance you’d enjoy this book. I’ve never read a story from this author before, apparently she mostly writes young adult, but I thought her foray into the adult genre was a faced paced success.
There were many viewpoints to follow since we follow every single competitor, with strategic help from the author, you get the hang of it pretty quickly.
I requested this one before release and forgot about until Random House UK/ Del Rey approved & sent a copy over well after release which made it a nice surprise.
This is one of those books that is super difficult to talk about without going deep into spoiler territory. I love the concept; a group of people sign up for a reality show to play a game of hide and seek in an abandoned theme park until one remains who would win a cash prize.... But all is not as it initially seems.
Kiersten White does a great job world building; details are left like breadcrumbs in the woods for you to follow.. She also does a good job of balancing the large cast of characters which isn't easy considering two have the same name! Unlike something like 'Lost' White also remembers to have a satisfying payoff and end to her high concept tale.
Its firmly in the YA genre so it's a breezy quick read. Recommended.
A creepy, fast-paced thriller that never let up - on the entertainment or the thrills! Couldn't put it down, loved the twists and turns.
A competition set in an abandoned amusement park where the goal is to hide and not get found. 14 contestants, one week, big prize money. Everyone is desperate to win, except Mack. She feels like she doesn't have a choice, but hiding is the one thing she does best. The the game quickly morphs into something more sinister and no one is expecting it.
So much to enjoy about this book. The amusement park makes a great setting for a thriller, loved the juxtaposition of turning something that offers happy memories, into something of nightmares. Lots of characters, and the author makes a good job of differentiating between them, and even creates some depth and character growth. The pace is unrelenting, making this a complete page turner. And lastly, so unpredictable and simply entertaining.
This was a 4 or even 5 star book at first, but the second half felt much weaker. Still, I enjoyed it!
The main character was likeable (or understandable when not likeable). The POV switches around a fair bit, which I'm not a fan of, particularly as it sometimes felt slapdash and, in some cases, there was just one glimpse into a character's head.
The concept of having to hide in an abandoned theme park is a fantastic one, and I most enjoyed the actual "hide and seek" element. However, it quickly becomes clear that the story is a supernatural one, and the seeker isn't human. This is where the book started to lose me - I think the blurb should've made the fact that it's supernatural clear, and I feel like a horror story where the horrors were human would have actually worked better with the concept instead of the rather convoluted supernatural backstory, which also required a lot of explaining. The ending was also extremely abrupt - I would've loved some kind of epilogue, if not a happy ending.

I had heard about this book when it was originally released in hardback and thought it sounded right up my street, but put it on the backburner after hearing some quite mixed reviews on my social media feeds.
However, when a review copy that I had forgotten even requesting popped into my inbox months later (perhaps to coincide with a paperback release), I thought I might as well give it a try.
And how glad I am that I did. I found Hide to be a deliciously atmospheric romp of a horror story that had me captivated from start to finish. I should have listened to my gut, because it was indeed right up my street!
Hide tells the story of a girl named Mack, who is in pretty dire circumstances. She’s in and out of a homeless shelter and tortured by memories of her dad murdering her entire family except her. So when someone suggests she participates in an organised game of hide and seek in which the last participant standing wins $50,000, Mack figures she’s got nothing to lose.
But when she enters the game - which takes place in an abandoned amusement park - she and her fellow competitors start to realise something is very wrong. Before long, they are forced to ask themselves: is the game all they might lose if they are found?
I adored the creepy vibe of this book and the slasher-style ‘one-by-one’ picking off of characters. The setting is also just wonderful. I’d love to see it made into a film or TV series.
Some of the negative reviews singled out the ending of this book, and I would concede that it’s perhaps a little abrupt. I also think it’s worth knowing before you go in that there is a supernatural element at play here, as that could maybe affect enjoyment if you were unaware.
However, I would definitely recommend Hide to horror fans and would say it’s perfect for fans of Christina Henry’s Near The Bone, Jeepers Creepers, Predator and The Hunt. It also has similarities to a recent horror movie I watched and cannot remember the name of for the life of me - it’s set in the 1970s and the characters’ minibus breaks down, whereupon they also find themselves stuck in a game in which those overseeing it take bets on who will survive.
If you had been undecided about Hide after its mixed reception, perhaps consider giving it a try and who knows - you might end up enjoying it as much as I did!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK for a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A dark thriller/horror that gripped me from beginning to the end. I had a mixed reaction to the characters, some I was really rooting for whilst others maybe not so much. Hide was a thrilling read that I really loved reading.
A group of contestants think they are going to play in a reality game with the winner at the end winning a huge prize amount at the end and all they have to do is stay hidden and not be detected but all is not what it seems, something out there is hunting and you really must stay hidden if you want to survive.
The pacing was written very well, the thrills and horror was fast paced and kept me guessing what was out there with them, I like how the setting was different and kept you guessing whilst with the horror/thriller aspects kept me on the edge of my seat rooting for the characters.
I can’t wait to see what Kiersten White brings out next time, one of my favourite authors and I really enjoyed Hide and will be reading it again.
Fourteen people get invited to play a game in an abandoned amusement park. The challenge is to spend a week staying hidden in the park. The last one standing wins $50,000. But things soon turn deadly.
The premise of this one is fantastic - it's original and exciting. The setting of the abandoned amusement park really added to the premise.
The execution was slightly sloppy though. The story gave bios to each of the contestants which didn't feel needed. The villain was unhinged and caricaturely comical. The motivation was weak, in my opinion. And the end felt very rushed.
Even so, it was enjoyable on a surface level but would not read again.
I did enjoy the found family trope though.
Hide is a horror novel about a game of hide and seek with very high stakes, set in an abandoned amusement park. Mack has nothing, so when she has the chance to take part in a week-long game of hide and seek in an abandoned theme park to win prize money, she takes that opportunity. Well, that, and she has a history of hiding. As she meets her fellow competitors, she knows she's not there to make friends, but when it seems less of a fun competition and more of a fight for survival, Mack might have to work with other people if she wants to get out alive.
The concept of the book is an obvious draw, with the setting a memorable one and hide-and-seek being a great horror concept. The opening sets up Mack's creepy backstory, which drives her character throughout, and then you slowly meet the other competitors and watch as they begin the competition. The first few days and nights of the competition are particularly tense and I felt a real ominous sense before you fully knew what was going on. The twist won't be to everyone's tastes as the book becomes more supernatural horror, but I'd already expected that and I quite like how it plays out, a combination of human and otherworldly threat.
The writing can be a bit confusing as it changes perspectives quickly and once Mack starts the competition there's a lot of characters for a while, but it wasn't so much that I couldn't keep track of what was going on, and it was fairly typical for some horror books that also try and cram in too many perspectives to build up tension. There's ambiguity and not everything goes somewhere, but Hide is a fun horror novel with a good setting and an ominous atmosphere for the set up that turns into a fairly exciting narrative to end.
I loved the start of this. The prologue, the premise, the set up; all fantastic! I also enjoyed the atmosphere throughout the book and the way the tension was slowly and subtly ramped up.
However, the book then takes a supernatural turn and I wasn’t expecting it. Nothing in the blurb made me think that this had a supernatural angle and it was a disappointment for me.
A spooky and enjoyable read, however the poorly executed supernatural element let it down for me.

Splendid thriller/horror, I really enjoyed this. Another high-concept tale, Hide is a delightfully simple concept – a bunch of people have to hide for seven days from sunrise to sunset and the last one standing wins. But nothing’s ever quite that easy, is it? Great characters, some you’ll be rooting for and others you can’t wait to get caught. White does a great job of ratcheting up the tension as the days progress. Highly recommended.
Dark and twisty like a haunted rollercoaster, this takes Mack, as a central narrator, a girl with no family, no future and a past she is running away from, and plunges her head first in the opportunity of her lifetime. Or her death time.
Mack is aspiring to anonymity. She lives in a homeless centre, with no foundations and a barely hinted at past. Given no chance other than to say 'yes' to the Ox Extreme Sports competition , where the winner takes it all. Except-there is no phone service, no way out of the fun fair , a water tight NDA to sign before participating, and a rag tag bunch of wannabes, has beens and ever weres about to lose themselves in a haunted funfair.
But as each competitor is slowly revealed, do they all have what it takes to win? And just who would they throw under a bus to get there? And what's with the highy suspicious disappearance of personal belongings, the creepy support staff (hello Linda and Gary!) and the way they sugarcoat what is a very creepy theme park, built on a highly toxic piece of land?
Why was it abandoned in the first place?
And what made the producers pick it in the first place?
The creepy introduction makes it sound like the underbelly of every theme park you have ever been to, it's instantly relatable for the urban myths that surround it -we live down the rbakers dowzenoad from one very much like it,a sea front amusement park , with peeling paint, terrifying carousel horses and the site of several deaths....-and it draws you. Once the scene is set and the characters introduced, you are hooked. And whilst we spend a little time with each of them, Mack is the heart of the story and Mack is the one you are rooting for. Partly because you know you want her to stay around long enough to tell her tale and partly because you know she has a good heart and will help save some of the others who you just know will land themselves in peril.
A faceless corporation.
A baker's dozen contestants with nothing to lose.
A contestant who wants the prize money in order to hide herself forever.
A haunted funfair.
And some very eerie, creepy goings on....
Hide is a mystery wrapped in a horror tale with some unsettling shenanigans that will make you jump. It is the right length, I think, for this story, because at 236 pages, the suspense can be maintained and the plot reveals are often 'blink and you miss' them. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope you will too!
