This is a very unique thriller. The story building was very original. The characters are well developed. I even managed to like a killer. A great unusual thriller
I can't help it but I really liked this on paper seemingly unlikeable main protagonist; I followed along with Ruby's story and her murderous escapades and enjoyed this entertaining read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review.
I had very high hopes going into this as the plot sounded right up street. Two of my favourite books ( Sweetpea by C.J.Skuse and Necropolis by Guy Portman) have similar plots regarding everyday serial killers so this book was already on a pedastal because of those. Now whilst those other 2 books have more 'satire' in them, this was slightly different but in no way did it affect how much I loved it!
We following Ruby whose husband has just died and she is being accused of his murder - which is ironic as he is the only person who has died around her that she didn't kill.
I loved how we got to hear the full back stories for her other murders told throughout the story whilst she is being investigated for the murder of her husband, Jason. The investigation by the detective as he uncovers more of her past and this is revealed through Ruby also talking us through the past was brilliant and really keeps you pulled in and intrigued throughout the whole of the story. I also enjoyed how we got to see her friendship with Roman change and grow throughout the book and thought it was so cleverly woven in. Ruby as a character was just so enigmatic but also hilarious which added that touch of light relief to the story.
Overall, I really enjoyed this and it definitely lived up to the hype that I placed on it. I look forward to reading more from this author!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Publishing Group for my complimentary copy. All opinions are honest and my own.
This was a gripping, dark and chilling thriller which had me gripped from the start. A fast paced and intense storyline which was very well written
This is a gripping novel that I throughly enjoyed. Thank you for an advanced copy - it was a pleasure to read this book.
Loved it!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access this book in exchange for my honest feedback.
A classic in the making. Blood sugar kept me gripped from the start and wanting to find out just how the story line would develop, definitely one to add to your list
A unique read - starting quite dark when aged 5 Ruby murdered another child who had been bullying her sister fast forward 25 years Ruby is being questioned about her husbands death and questions arise about this incident and other deaths. Is Ruby a serial killer ? What follows is a gripping read taking us through Ruby’s life the accusations.

She's accused of four murders but she only committed three!
Roxy is not a psychopath because she helps sick animals, cries when she's sad and falls madly in love. She has always been a good judge of character and knows when people are inherently bad and she is not one of those people.
As soon as I heard the tag line for this book I was sold. I'm always on the look out for a different thriller and this fit the bill. I read this with the lovely Sharada @sharadareadsbooks and as part of our chat we discussed whether this was a thriller or a crime/mystery and this got me thinking about what the definition of a thriller actually is. When I googled it the genre was described as dark, engrossing and suspenseful, Blood Sugar ticked all these boxes. There is a shocking start but then Sasha Rothchild does not go down the sensationalist route as the rest of the story seemed as normal to read about as buying an icecream or going to bed even with a killer as her protagonist. Despite being inside the head of a murderer and following her every move I found myself sympathising with Ruby and nothing that she did repulsed or shocked me as I understood her reasoning behind it. She was a strong and fascinating character who grew before my eyes but was inherently the same lovable girl we met at the start. Her story over the years was extremely gripping and did not rely on twists and turns but instead was a forthright retelling of how she ended up in front of a detective being grilled for a murder she didn't commit, but whose? I have heard comparisons to Dexter but Ruby stands in a league all of her own.
When Ruby was five, she saw a boy from school drowning in the ocean. He had been making her older sister’s life hell and instead of calling for help, Ruby held his ankle down until he drowned. She waited for the guilt to kick in, but it never did.
And then she finds herself in a similar situation again. And again.
Fast forward twenty-five years and Ruby is on trial for the murder. She is shown four photos, each person deceased, and each one Ruby was in proximity of at the time of death. She is responsible for three deaths but not four… but it may be the crime she didn’t commit which will end her freedom.
Blood Sugar is an incredibly fast-paced and addictive read centred around the main protagonist Ruby. She is an animal lover, psychologist and very loyal to her family, friends, and patients and yet she has murdered three people. I have never found a murderer so likeable which shows just how well Sascha Rothchild developed her- whilst a very complex character she is completely endearing and a true reflection that life and people are not always black and white.
I found this book very different to others I read. I enjoyed the killer was female, I liked that she wasn’t who you would generally perceive as a murderer and found it interesting that the book was written from the killer’s perspective as opposed to a detective’s which is often the case in many novels of this genre.
Themes in the book include but are not limited to psychology, family, loyalty, friendships, diabetes, and death. Some of my favourite parts of the book included the references to psychology and the way we (as a society) are afraid to talk about death.
Overall, an outstandingly fast paced dark thriller with well thought out and likeable characters. Five stars.
P.S they say never to judge a book by its cover, but just wow! Both cover and title drew me.
This cover is to die for!!!
This book struggles with a little bit of overhype I think, as I was scorching a little more from it.
It was a good idea, great characters, reminded me of How To Kill Your Family (which I loved) and I cannot get over this cover! But ultimately there were times when the plot dragged.. when things were over described… when there was a bit too much detail when a short snappy sentence would have sufficed.
A good read… but I wish I’d gone in having never heard anything about it and without seeing the cover. I set it up for failure in my head!
Ever thought of murdering someone? Ruby has had these thoughts before but I like many others she’s acted upon her thoughts. Not once, not twice but three times. All three times Ruby has got away with murder. Then one fateful night Rubys husband who she deeply loves and wants to grow old with dies in his sleep when his blood sugars drop too low in the middle of the night.
Ruby tried to pick herself up and move on with her life after her husbands death when one day a detective knocks on her door and it soon becomes clear that Ruby is a suspect in her husbands death and eventually she is arrested for his murder which ironically is the one death that she hasn’t played a part in. (I love the irony here)
I really enjoyed this book and even though Ruby was a murderer I really loved her character and found she was extremely likeable. I loved the way this book was written and how everything together to build a case against Ruby. Even though I knew she had murdered three people I hoped against all hope that she would get away with it.
This was a fast paced and exciting twisty thriller which I really enjoyed and would definitely recommend as a good read to others. Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for this review.
The idea of having the story told from the viewpoint of a serial killer is fascinating and it did start out intriguing but really slows down about half way through. It feels like we are building up to a massive ending but it was just meh.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing an ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
THIS WAS SO GOOD ARGH?!!!
This book had me in a CHOKEHOLD from start to end and I feel as though comparing it to Dexter is doing it a disservice because it's a lot more intricate storytelling than that .
The absolute NERVE of Gertrude though!!!!
The main character was so well written and fully thought out that I have to say I respect the grind. She really didn't take anyone's bs.
Also the quote about mr.cat pooping in the bathtub is the greatest thing I've read this year! Keep it up!
My only criticism is that I wish it had been DARKER and more unhinged!
Blood sugar
25 year old Ruby has landed herself an interrogation by the homicide division of Miami Beach PD. She can’t exactly say she’s innocent with 3 murders under her belt but she certainly isn’t guilty of the one she’s being accused of. As we take a look back through Ruby’s life we see everything that has led her to this point. Question is, has Ruby’s freedom come to an end?
I loved this book, a nice new refreshing take on a young female serial killer. Not your typical murderer, Ruby has many likeable qualities which endear you to her despite her little killing habit. I thought the story line was exciting and I loved the insight we got into who and why she has killed before. The only thing that stopped me giving this 5 stars was the lack of a big ending twist! I think the writer missed a trick there, but otherwise it was fab!
I really enjoyed this book. I'm always interested in reading crime-psychological thriller books and this one definitely delivered. Was quick-paced which I appreciated.
I will say that I felt some parallels between the subject matter and another novel, How To Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie which was published last year but this may just be a coincidence.
This was a new author for me and I loved her novel, it was so different. Ruby murders people and it looks like now, at last her carefully constructed lies are coming undone. She is being questioned by the police about four murders, three which she actually committed but will it be the fourth that lands her in jail.
Great story that keeps you turning the pages to see what will happen next.
Ruby is accused of four murders trouble is she's only commited three...
This book goes back and fourth from Ruby's childhood/teenage years to the present day where she is holed up in an interrogation room in regards to her husbands death.
An interesting narrative told from her perspective and her reasonings for murder. I enjoyed the writing style, certain bits were straight to the point and didn't drag out and it wasn't overly descriptive for the sake of it
I would love for there to be a sequel to this book to see if she commits anymore murders!
First of all, I love this cover. And going off the blurb this sounded right up my street.
Going in to this I was hoping for a fun romp with some dark humour. Did I get this?
In short...no.
This story unfortunately never grabbed me. The plot felt slow and to be honest I found it a bit dull.
I preferred the chapters set in the current time, I felt like the chapters talking about how the lead character Ruby got to where she is now quite boring and I found myself just willing the story to get a move on.
Another problem I had is that Ruby is such a cold character I didn't care about her and found it hard to connect to her.
So, what did I like?
I did like how the story wasn't written from the detectives point of view, as these are everywhere, so this felt unique in it's perspective.
By the end, the whole story just felt pointless and it felt like nothing really happened.
5/5 !
I know people say not to judge a book by its cover… but I judged this book by it’s cover and title, and I do not regret for one instance.
Whitty, clever and gripping. The book follows main character Ruby, who is under suspicion of murdering four people, including her husband. Little do the detectives know, she’s only responsible for three of the four deaths.
Ruby is not your usual serial killer. She is very likeable and personable. The book is written in a way to make you understand and in a way even respect her justifications for murdering her three victims 😂
The perfect beach read for the upcoming Summer months. What an excellent debut novel from Sascha!
