Falling For Her Off-Limits Boss is an enjoyable read that immerses you into the Chicago hospital as if you are watching first-hand Emma and Mark fight their attraction for each other.
A story full of emotion
Emma is an anaesthesiologist and has come to Chicago to work with Dr Mark Henderson who is world renowned for his oncology work and research but both Emma and Mark have their own demons to battle with
Emma has to be my one of my favourite characters for a while, she is insecure but brilliant at her job. She is determined but also human and her thirst for knowledge drew me to her from the very first page. Mark is haunted by the death of his wife, Claire, and everything he does is influenced by that loss and his reaction to it. He is a brilliant doctor and I loved watching him take charge and be in control in the hospital whilst also being so vulnerable and human when he’s with Emma. He could have been a difficult character to get to know but because he has so many different facets I started to adore him very quickly
Both Emma and Mark have had to overcome a lot and seeing them start to confront their issues was a huge part of the story. For Mark it’s Claire’s death, he hasn’t gotten over the guilt of not being there throughout parts of her illness (not a spoiler as it’s discussed very early on) and I’m not going to lie, it was difficult to read at times because it reflects some of my own feelings and emotions of things that I can’t change and I’m sure it’s similar to many other readers. For Emma, it’s her manipulative ex and possibly carrying a hereditary cancer gene and seeing her start to confront her feelings and emotions from her ex making her work in private practice instead of in a hospital environment was really well written. I could see her growing confidence as the story developed and I was really routing for her to be able to follow her dreams
This book is full of emotions and challenges but it also has a huge amount of medical drama in that feels so real that I almost felt like I could be in the hospital following some of the patients and their stories which fitted perfectly into the storyline
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a medical romance full of emotions that will challenge you at times but which will always pull you in, right from the very beginning
This was a really good medical romance, it tells the story of Mark and Emma who meet when both working within a cancer team. Mark has recently lost his wife and Emma her mum and both are still dealing with the fallout and learning to rebuild. The story builds as they start to trust each other and slowly start to get over their losses together.
Cute romance, but for me it all escalated way too quickly, did not feel that invested and they already were moving fast. Both characters are scarred and with a sad past, but unfortunately that did not make their romance that much more believable. I did not feel much chemistry, and the whole matter felt quite forced, no buildup to it.
An enjoyable debut from Luana DaRosa with likeable characters and a well written second chance romance. Surgeon Mark and anaesthetist Emma are both troubled by the past and form a bond whilst working together. I enjoyed the fact that the two were attracted to each other from the off but reluctant to act on this, and that the relationship seemed to develop in its own way to the point where Emma and Mark began to realise the friendship could be something more. The plot was well paced and the characters believable, and as a reader you did want the, to be happy in the end.
Personally, I did find the story to be very cancer heavy to the point where it almost overtook the plot. Whilst I appreciate the book is largely set in an oncology department, from the first chapter it was clear that there were at least three cancer based threads (Mark’s late wife, Emma’s potentially hereditary cancer gene and the patients in the hospital) and it did seem a bit much. From reading the cover blurb I loved the fact Emma was an anaesthetist as it’s something different for a a medical romance and I did enjoy reading it, but I just felt there was an awful lot of cancer related issues going on and it may a be a sensitive issue for readers with personal experience - this is just my opinion and not a reflection on the author’s writing skills.
Overall, a good debut from the author and I would read another of her books.
A lovely romance. Both members of the couple are strong characters and fighting to do the right things in their hospital. The hospital information is given to strengthen the story and helps the tale keep moving forward. The cancer stories in both Emma and Mark’s background are sensitively told and allow a strong emotional attachment to them both. Their future happiness is cheered on.!
This is my first Mills & Boon medical book and I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I enjoy anything medical related and have recently fallen for romance novels so it seemed like a no brainer!
Despite being a short novel, I thought the author wrote the characters well and I was able to empathise with them pretty quickly. Their back stories were quite intense so it was not a light read in that sense. There are a number of triggers in this book including emotional abuse, grief and cancer.
I enjoyed the medical elements too, though sometimes I felt the storyline bounced around too quickly. Although this could have been intended to reflect the fast paced nature of a hospital environment.
The love story itself was pretty standard, though sweet and I would say the smut level was fairly low.
My main gripe with this book was the amount of inconsistencies with the time line. It really made it difficult for me to immerse into the story, and I'm suprised these haven't been picked up. One minute she's been there a night, the next she's been there a week. She's doing only one on call shift, then she's doing week's worth etc. Might sound trivial but I find things like this so distracting.
Overall a pretty good, easy read 2. 75 stars.
Thank you NetGalley and Mills & Boon for the free arc of this book.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Mills and Boon in return for an honest review.
It’s well written but I’m afraid that I didn’t really enjoy it. I enjoyed parts of it but I never really felt that the characters came to life or that their love story was real. There was a lot of medical stuff in this story, And a lot of dramatic angst in the pasts of both Mark and Emma. Too much! It was all doom, death and illness, as well as spousal coercion and control. Why on earth Emma has allowed Rob to control her for so long was hard to understand and I also found it difficult to sympathise with her for allowing her own career needs to be neglected for so many years because of him.
I could understand and empathise with Mark’s problems. Losing his wife in the way he had, had clearly had a big effect on him and his ability to embark on a new relationship.
The sex scenes were very well written, I think this writer shows great potential and I look forward to reading more of her work. I think this book rates 2.5 stars.
