Loved this freaking book! I read it in one sitting!
A rain begins to fall but it's not like any other rain we've ever seen. It's gelatinous like snot falling from the sky. The story focuses on a group of folks on a university campus where the rain was first reported. Within minutes the rain spreads across the planet and the news reports that to the people on campus. So many crazy things happen and human reaction, human nature unfolds as it does . . . The story has a strong 'The Mist' vibe that was well-done.
You've got to read this suspenseful story!
This was a sit, start and don’t stop until you’re finished read. Literally. I was glad that I started this on a day off so that I could read straight through to the end without a break. I loved it, Like the characters, I was constantly trying to figure out what the rain was, why it started, if it was dangerous and found it interesting to watch the characters evolve and change, some for the better and some not, such is humanity. I saw some reviews that compare this with Stephen King’ “The Mist”. I disagree. The only real common ingredient is a strange weather event and a group of strangers taking shelter. “When It Rains” stands on its own as a worthy and enjoyable
read. The perfect book for a rainy day! #netgalley #WhenItRains
I read a lot of dark horror so, for me, this book didn’t quite fit into the thriller/horror genre. I feel like the book cover and description are misleading; I had pictured more of a World War Z scenario when the slimy rain began to fall. The characters were great but were secluded to one room throughout the entire book which was slightly boring. I wanted more gore, more action, and more of a story line but was left feeling disappointed.
Wow so I rarely give four stars and this is my second in a row !
This is great ,short novel ,turn things upside down at end and very good and original ,plus quite timely .
Ty netgalley and publishers for the advanced copy and I for sure will look out for this author again
Wow!! I didn't expect this book to be as great as it was. I also did not realize that it was a novella, so this was a quick read. I was excited to read a locked room horror, people trapped in a bookstore with potentially toxic rain falling outside? What's not to love about that!
The character development was exceptional! I was rooting for and not rooting for certain characters. This would be a great movie and what a statement on pack mentality.
If you are looking for a tension-filled quick read horror, this is it!!
I wan to read more by this author!
Honestly, because of the cover, i thought this would be kind of a zombie story, but nothing of the sort, and i must say, it was really enjoyable, the way it was written reminded me of newsflesh series, i really start reading and couldnt put my Kindle down until i finished this book, the twist in the story really caught me by surprise.
I got a free ARC of this book in netgalley and i am leaving this review voluntarily.
To say this is/was interesting is a complete understatement. I didn't like it all that much, it wasn't really horror.. more Science Fiction. I ended up skim reading and not enjoying this one.
A group of people come together in a bookstore to escape the sludge-like rain that started happening across the world. Nobody is certain it’s toxic, but they’re also not certain it’s safe.
I thought this was a decent, quick read. It took me a couple tries to get into it but once I did I read it all at once. It’s a slow start but there’s an unexpected twist toward the end.
This was a very compelling little novella and I loved the diverse characters. Refreshing to see in speculative fiction. This has Black Mirror vibes, which I love, and I’m definitely going to read Gunnells other work!
Thankyou netgalley for the ARC!
Before starting this book, please be aware that it is not necessarily horror, at least in my opinion. This is more about the human pysche while being presented with a dire situation. With that in mind, this book was well written and scarily realistic especially given our society's current situation. For those who love this type of reading, this is the perfect book for you.
Thank you, BooksGoSocial, for allowing me to read When It Rains early!
Gunnells' novella was such a "nice" reading experience! The quotes are there because it scared the living bejeezus out of me. I looked up Mark Allan Gunnells after finishing this and I definitely need to go through his backlist! I loved his writing.
I did NOT expect the ending this book gave AT ALL. It stands out to me in the field of virus-related books. I enjoyed all the characters, and living through a pandemic made this seem extremely realistic. I cared about the characters and their relationships. The only thing I hated were some of the characters (I'm looking at you, Baldy). I would recommend this to anyone who wants a quick read with a gut wrenching twist at the end.
I sped thorugh this book in an hour it was so quick and easy to read. It is well written with a good level of character development for a novella and a intriguing and well executed storyline. It was atmospheric and creepy and I felt like I was in the university library with the characters, and lets face it those huge campus libraries can be creepy at the best of times.
A really enjoyable read.
A superb novella that follows a group of people stuck inside a university bookstore when a mysterious gel like substance falls from the sky. The author does a fantastic job of showing how having a lack of information can cause fear and paranoia to spread among a group. The final twist is what made the novella a strong 4 star read for me. I will definitely be checking more work out by the author.
Thanks to Netgalley for an e-Arc
This was a super short yet entertaining story! What an interesting twist!
This story shows that as humanity, we should watch who we cast out and how we treat others. Situations can be reversed so quickly!
I would recommend this book, it was a nice quick weekend read.
This is a story about fear.
I liked learning a bit about each person and how they ended up in the bookstore. The story flips between the people in the store, and a report written after the storm. The story kept me engaged and I loved the unexpected ending.
This was a good, quick read that had some interesting ideas. I also loved the nod to Josh Malerman. And, of course, the twist.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC. This review contains my honest, unbiased opinion.
When it Rains is a nifty little Apocalyptic novella that plays out like a classic Twilight Zone episode. One day, an unexpected downpour begins in Greenville, SC, and shortly thereafter all over the globe. But instead of the usual precipitation, the clouds unleash a thick, viscous fluid that drenches everyone unlucky enough to be caught outside in it. The story is then told partially in World War Z fashion, excerpts from a book published in the aftermath of the "Deluge," but mainly the plot centers around a group of people inside a cafe/bookshop at a small college. As the strange storm continues and reports of possible sickness and death related to it come across the news and social media, the air inside the cafe quickly become volatile with those who haven't been exposed to the Deluge turning on those who have. The narrative serves not only as a tense horror/thriller about people suddenly caught in a frightening, confusing situation, but also as social commentary on how society has been acting these days, especially during the COVID crisis.
A great novella with heaps of suspense and intrigue. I enjoyed how things built up, then twisted around and was really interested to keep picking this back up for more!
Big thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of thus book in exchange for an honest review.
Well that was a very interesting novella, especially as we are all living within a pandemic due to the Coronavirus. This story did remind me of ‘The Mist’ by Stephen King, and just goes to prove how, we as humans react differently to certain situations. You really get to see the ‘real’ human nature of everyone. Whereas, some people go out of their way to help their fellow human beings, others, will see this situation as an excuse to commit terrible acts, which they would never necessarily think about doing, though some are just waiting for opportunities to be antisocial, committing riots, looting, scaremongering, bullying etc. We’ve unfortunately seen how people react in our own pandemic. This is a very good novella, and I was not expecting the ending, which was a nice surprise!! Thanks to Netgalley for sending me this ARC!
