Emma Makepeace is recruited by a very dodgy organisation called The Agency and sent out to retrieve the son of a Russian scientist and deliver him to safety so that he can’t be used as leverage by the Russians to get their hands on his super star mother. The only problem is that something fishy is going down at the Agency and Emma is cut off from all aid and she can’t trust her handlers. She has to get her handsome doctor all the way across London to the safety of MI6 when the Russians have eyes and spies everywhere. This was a very silly, very enjoyable romp. Don’t look at it too closely or the holes will become visible. It moves fast and doesn’t take itself too seriously and has all the classic spy type tropes.
Not only a thrilling spy novel, but one of those stories where you also feel better-informed by the end. In spite of the world they live in, the characters are clear and believable as they race the reader through a gripping plot exposing the brutal reality of what it takes to be successful in this most secret of careers..
A great spy thriller. Emma is given the task for looking for and looking after someone. When she finally tracks him down, they have to run off from her own firm. Lots of twists and turns but a very enjoyable book.
This book is a fast paced, thrilling, unputdownable heart-stopping spy story with a really interesting protagonist at its heart. It's wonderfully atmospheric with a great sense of place. I read it one sitting and am desperate to read more. I am hoping this is only the beginning of a series of stories about Emma Makepeace!
.
A wonderful, rip-roaring thriller with a very well-written cast of both goodies and baddies.
Set mainly over the course of one night in Central London this kept me totally gripped and it was very difficult to put down.
I’m delighted to learn that we can expect to learn more about Emma’s story in the future.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
I read this book in one sitting, I love spy thrillers and this one was perfect. Following Emma on a job that begins going very wrong very quickly I was hooked from the start. The pacing was perfect and I didn't want it to end. I'm so pleased this is a series and I can't wait to get back to these characters in the future.
A thoroughly satisfying thriller with an engaging main character that deftly evokes its London setting.
A real fun, action packed spy book. Wished I had read it earlier. Love this genre and it was great to have a new female on the case. Definitely recommend
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion
At last a female James Bond! Well almost...
Alias Emma encapsulates the world of espionage. As an operative for the British Government, her assignments are varied both in supposed importance and level of danger.
Emma is fiercely loyal to her 'handler' so when things start to go wrong, she has to think on her feet to.bring her charge to safety.
I really enjoyed this. It was a bit different from what I was expecting. Emma's motivation for what she does is surprisingly personal and drives her to do her best.
I really hope that this is going to be a series.
I love spy and action films and books so was looking forward to reading Alias Emma. Emma Makepiece is a new spy for the British government who is given her first assignment to bring the son of a Russian dissident to safety while GRU seem to know their every move. The action takes place over a couple of days and is interleaved with flashbacks.
Fast paced thriller, I found myself eager to read on. Looking forward to more of Emma's adventures
A great fast paced read.
Emma Makepeace is newly qualified and undercover in a quiet shop in London. That is until she gets a call that her services are needed for a much more important job. She has to protect a man wanted by the Russians, the only thing is he isn't convinced he's in danger and, wants no part of her protection. The first part of her assignment then is to change his mind.
Once Emma convinces Michael he is in danger the action really takes off. I was then surprised by the book taking a backward look at how Emma became an agent and her career so far. This happened a few times and at first was an irritant until it all came together and added so much more to the this cat and mouse chase.
Just how can two people become invisible in a city covered in cameras and outwit their predators, who seem to be one step ahead of them all the time?
Emma reminded me of Purdy (Joanna Lumley) from the Avengers - she is a feisty, so resourceful and, it was a joy to read her exploits. It can be difficult to read action scenes and them not be confusing or boring, but I was in no doubt throughout this book what was happening. The book certainly kept me on the edge of my seat.
What a ride! I had left this book languishing on my TBR pile and I’m kicking myself. I was immediately swept up in the story of Emma, a spy (for want of a better term) for an agency within MI5/6. The book is set in London and takes place for the most part in one 24 hour period . Emma has been tasked to bring in the son of an eminent Russian scientist who now works for the West. The fly in the ointment is the son doesn’t want to play ball and the Russians are after him. This is a tense, very well written, fast paced, yet believable thriller. I’m going to be looking out for more from this talented author.
This is my first time reading a spy novel and tbh I really liked it!
Unfortunately for me I got a bit confused and felt like the book was rushed. But overall I really enjoyed this book.
Killing Eve meets James Bond is a pretty accurate description of this thriller with a difference.
Emma works for 'The Agency' a secret organisation within the British Government. With Russian assassins on the hunt in London, Emma is tasked with getting Michael Primalov to safety, with no back up, and only her wits as a weapon. Car chases, secret passages and gun fights, this is far-fetched and over the top. But also highly enjoyable and a great bit of escapism. I really liked the concise nature of the writing and the fact that the story covers 24 hours made it fast paced and energetic.
While this may not be a book I would have necessarily picked up, I did really enjoy it and became engaged from the start.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A fun action packed book, not my favourite genre, but a good enjoyable read.
I'm a big fan of spy novels and the genre in general and so was looking forward to this., but Emma Makepeace, on her first real assignment is more of an action packed superheroine than a genuine spy. Her job is to persaude an innocent man that his life is in danger from Russian state assasins and to bring him to safety.
If you want something all action, fast moving, full of flash backs, a novel more Jack Reacher than George Smiley, then this might just be for you.
My thanks to Random House UK, Cornerstone Century for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Alias, Emma’ by Ava Glass.
Rookie agent Emma Makepeace is about to experience the longest night of her life.
Emma (her alias) has recently begun to work for the shadowy British intelligence organisation known only as The Agency. She is assigned to track down Michael (formerly Mikhail) Primalov, whose life is in danger from Russian agents and to quietly bring him in. It seems a relatively simple task.
She locates Michael in Camden Town in the late hours of the night though when there’s a breakdown in communications with her Agency contact they need to reach the safety of MI6 HQ across the city before dawn. With CCTV cameras everywhere and a GRU assassination team on their heels, apparently being supplied with inside information, she and Michael face a frantic race across London.
The author is a former journalist and civil servant for the Home Office, where she became fascinated by the world of spies. This is her debut and the first in a new espionage series set in London. It sounded like something I would love and it proved so. Like many writers who learnt their craft via journalism, her style is crisp and economical.
This resulted in a white-knuckle, all action thriller that certainly bodes well for the series. Emma proved a very accessible lead, relatively new to the intelligence service and forced to think on her feet to ensure that she and her asset survive.
Not surprisingly, I sat down and was glued to this, finishing it in a couple of sittings. I am definitely looking forward to more adventures for Alias, Emma.
In this breakneck, race-against-the-clock thriller, a British spy has twelve hours to deliver her asset across London after Russia hacks the city’s security cameras. Can she make it without being spotted . . . or killed?
Nothing about Emma Makepeace is real. Not even her name.
A newly minted secret agent, Emma’s barely graduated from basic training when she gets the call for her first major assignment. Eager to serve her country and prove her worth, she dives in headfirst.
Emma must covertly travel across one of the world’s most watched cities to bring the reluctant—and handsome—son of Russian dissidents into protective custody, so long as the assassins from the Motherland don’t find him first. With London’s famous Ring of Steel hacked by the Russian government, the two must cross the city without being seen by the hundreds of thousands of CCTV cameras that document every inch of the city’s streets, alleys, and gutters.
Buses, subways, cars, and trains are out of the question. Traveling on foot, and operating without phones or bank cards that could reveal their location or identity, they have twelve hours to make it to safety. This will take all of Emma’s skills of disguise and subterfuge. But when Emma’s handler goes dark, there’s no one left to trust. And just one wrong move will get them both killed.
This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.
Wow what a great thriller from the first page and just kept getting better. This follows Emma Makepeace who works as a spy for the British Government and is given the job of getting Michael son of Dimitri and Elena Primalov who were working as spy's in Russia for the British Government and fled to Britain and now in protection but the Russians have sent their GRU agents to find Michael.
Emma is given the job of delivering Michael to MI6 for protection but the Russians have hacked the camera's with help from someone inside MI5 so Emma has to use all her skills to get Michael across London.
An absolute roller-coaster ride of action, adventure, enemies to allies, heart-thumping thriller. going underground and fast boat trips a real page turner until the end.
Look forward to more stories about Emma.
Thanks to NetGalley & Random House UK, Cornerstone for a advanced copy.
This was an interesting story but, I found it a little confusing and rushed. I had to keep going back to previous pages to re-read just to keep the story in order in my head. I dislike doing that as it doesn’t make the book flow so easily. So hence, I’m only giving this book four stars. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
