This is just a clip of the Death on the Nile to peak you’re interest. Gripping beginning. Would like to read on!
This is a brilliant taster for the full thing.
It's a story I know well and I enjoyed this interpretation
Thank you to HarperCollins U.K. Audio for a sampler of the new unabridged audiobook edition of ‘Death on the Nile’ by Agatha Christie narrated by Kenneth Branagh.
The full audiobook was released in 2020 to tie-in with the new film adaptation starring and directed by Kenneth Branagh. However, due to the pandemic the film release was delayed until early 2022.
While only 9 minutes long, this sampler offers three extracts that gives an indication of Kenneth Branagh’s range in voicing the novel’s various characters and capturing its mood.
As a result of this positive experience I have added the full audiobook of this classic Golden Age Detective novel to my Wish List.
Updated 30 May 2022:
Just an update as I recently did a combined read/listen of Agatha Christie’s ‘Death on the Nile’ and so experienced the full unabridged audiobook edition narrated by Kenneth Branagh.
Given Branagh’s involvement in the recent film adaptation, he was the perfect narrator and definitely enjoyed himself with respect to the various characters’ voices.
The production values were very high and I felt that it was a 5-star rating.
Didn’t realise this was a sample when I requested it but I’m definitely interested in reading the book now.
This advanced copy is a sample, which is a shame as I found it engrossing and wanted to hear more. The narration feels intimate and had the right amount of intrigue. As a well known title, it could feel staid but this is not the case, as this audiobook modernises Christie's classic tale into the 21st century.
I didnt realise that this was a sampler before requesting this from netgalley. The narration suited the story and it did mean that I was intrigued to listen to more.
Great little sample of the book. The Narrator was interesting and kept me wanting to keep listening to the story. A great version of a classic.
Loved this audiobook. Having read this novel before it was nice to hear it read with such conviction.
I've listened to an excerpt of this title, which included the first five chapters of Agatha Christie's classic mystery Death on the Nile, narrated by Kenneth Branagh. Branagh is the director and plays the lead character, Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, in the recent (2022) film adaptation of the book.
While the short excerpt didn't provide an opportunity to critique Branagh's interpretation of the majority of the characters, including Poirot himself, it was sufficient to reveal a competent and convincing narration.
My thanks to the narrator Kenneth Branagh, publisher HarperCollins UK Audio (and by extension the estate of the late Agatha Christie) and NetGalley UK for the opportunity to listen to this excerpt.
One of the most famous detective novels by the world's all-time best crime writer and narrated by one of our best living actors. What's more to say, other than THIS is how you do it! Perfection.
I need more!
Short sharp and sweet. I felt like I needed a bit more of this Sampler to truly review it or decide if I want to purchase the book fully. The narration was good, held my attention, just too short to form an opinion on it.
“I think, myself, that the book is one of the best of my ‘foreign travel’ ones, and detective stories are ‘escape literature’ (and why shouldn’t they be!) the reader can escape to sunny skies and blue water as well as to crime in the confines of an armchair.” - Agatha Christie.
You’re indeed right Mrs. Christie! “Death on the Nile” was one hell of a journey. It was gripping, nail-biting, tense, and dark. In a word, it was just UNPUTDOWNABLE.
The story begins with Linnet Ridgeway….
“A girl jumped out, a girl without a hat and wearing a frock that looked (but only looked) simple. A girl with golden hair and straight autocratic features- a girl with a lovely shape- a girl such as was seldom seen in Malton-under-Wode.”
Our protagonist, Linnet! A beautiful girl. She has everything one can ask for. Money, looks, charm, and intellect!
The story progresses slowly and takes a leap with Linnet getting married and arriving on her honeymoon in Egypt. With her beloved husband. On a exotic cruise.
There are a wide variety of people on board. Along with Mr. Hercule Poirot, the famous detective!
Everything on that cruise seems perfect! But still, the atmosphere is tense. Something is wrong. Someone/a group of people want to harm Linnet.
But why!?
What fate awaits Linnet Ridgeway?
“Death on the Nile” is a perfect blend of an exotic location, brilliant character development, Christie’s exceptional story-telling ability, and Mr. Poirot’s flamboyance.
A perfect whodunnit to pick up this weekend!
Thanks NetGalley for providing me a copy of this book!
This was a very short sampler.
The narrator was good, and the excerpt gave an idea if the story x.
What a great sample. I love Poirot and I think Kenneth Branagh does a great job creating the charcater and keeping the pace of the book. A great updated audiobook, I can't wait to listen to the full book.
I listened to this sampler of the re-mastered audiobook and it was really nice to hear a more modern version of Death on the nile. The narrator kept the English stiff upper lip-ness to it but it definitely felt a bit more modern-posh. Can't wait to listen to the whole version and definitely can't wait to watch the film remake!!
Really liked the sampler that i was given, the story was being told very good and am for sure going to the full version of this audiobook.
I was lucky enough to listen to a sample of the audiobook via Netgalley. Really enjoyable and definitely left me wanting to hear more. Narration was spot on and created the atmosphere of the book.
Thank you Netgalley
Kenneth Branagh's narration was superb - clear, precise and made the characters immediately come to life. The few minutes of the sample flew by, drawing me straight in. I'm sure I will listen to the entire book when it's available.
A bit difficult to review a 9 minute sample but with a combination of a great book and Kenneth Branagh, what's not to love! Really wish the full audio was available. Still better than the recent film. Thanks to Netgalley.
Such a shame this is just a sample! I would have loved to listen to the whole book!
Kenneth Branagh does of course an amazing job as a narrator, drawing the listener in and leaving you wanting more!
