Really great sample made me want to read the book which I’ve now got a copy of!
Also watched the film which I enjoyed however the book is better in my opinion
I'm going to be honest with you all: I tried to read DEATH ON THE NILE in the early days of UK's COVID-19 lockdown back in April/May 2020 and I put the book down after 20-odd percent. I just wasn't gripped with it like I was with Agatha Christie's other works such as THE HOLLOW, AND THEN THERE WERE NONE and THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD.
But when I saw this sampler with Kenneth Branagh narrating (to celebrate the upcoming release of the movie adaption with him directing and starring in as Poirot), I was intrigued and, mainly, hoped that this would make me go back and try again.
This sampler is very short - the first three chapters and you're done within ten or so minutes. And because of this, I am tempted to try this again in audiobook form.
But I am in two minds over whether Kenneth is the narrator for me. I know David Suchet (Poirot in ITV's adaptions) has narrated a few Agatha Christie but not sure if I can go with him either.
But this has wetted my appetite to try a few Agatha Christie's this year! I am intrigued to see what I try out first!
Superb narration. This sample has left me eager to listen to the audiobook when it is released. Agatha Christie always delights and Death on the Nile is one of my favourites.
Classic Christie in Kenneth Branagh's voice. What more could a diehard Christie fan ask for? Cannot wait to see the movie!
5 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley for the audio ARC.
Well Done, Fluid Narration…
Enjoyable and entertaining sampler of the audiobook of Death on The Nile. This is the newer recording released in conjunction with the recently released movie and with Kenneth Branagh narrating. Narration is well done and fluid and makes for a solid listen. Do I prefer this narration to that of David Suchet or John Moffatt (both earlier editions of Death onThe Nile that I own and have listened to extensively)? The answer has to be a definite no. However, that said, I have still gone on to purchase this edition to enjoy and add to my Agatha Christie library.
I really liked Kenneth Branagh's reading. It's a shame this is just a sample. It ends on quite an intriguing note, leaving me to wonder what will come next! I will definitely be listening to the whole audiobook when I can.
A very short sample! But I was starting to wonder about Linnet so I will definitely be continuing this story. I liked Kenneth Branagh’s narration. You can tell this was a passion project of his. Looking forward to the movie as well!
As a huge fan of Agatha Christie I have listened to many of her stories as audiobooks, they are the sort of novels that suit the format well. Full disclosure; I adore the Hugh Fraser audio versions of the Poirot books, and I find the David Suchet version of Death on the Nile acceptable (he's my favourite Poirot on screen, though not my preferred narrator). I picked up this sample to see if Kenneth Branagh did a better job, and sadly I didn't like his narration style at all. It feels 'over-acted' to me, he puts word emphasis in odd places, and I just don't buy him as Poirot. If this was a dramatised version of the novel then maybe it'd work better, but it's meant to be narrated not acted so it's a no from me. 3 stars overall as the plot is still wonderful, but sadly this production doesn't work for me.
This sampler is very short, Poirot does not get a look in but it sets the scene nicely introducing some of the crucial characters in the story. Kenneth Branagh is a great narrator moving smoothly between the characters and pacing the story with skill. He distinguishes the voices, particularly the three young women without using outrageous accents, yet still maintaining the thread and emotion of their conversations.
I am looking forward to seeing the film and will definitely be looking to get the full version of this. I hope that there are more Branagh readings on the horizon.
This is a great sampler of the audiobook, and the narrator was fantastic. I loved the posh english accents, and other accents. I would love to listen to the whole audiobook, as I really enjoyed it and it made me smile.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this sampler audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This was only a 9 minute sample so was a bit difficult to get a great sense of the book, but Kenneth Branagh as a narrator was very good. Would love to listen to more of this audiobook:
This was such a short sample (9 minutes!) that it was hard to get any sense of the story or the characters, but I liked the narrator's voice and would be amenable to listening to a full audiobook read by him.
This is only a 10 minute sample of the audiobook but from what little I heard it sounded interesting and well narrated
The narration was great.
Easy to understand and filled with enthousiasm to get you excited.
I'd definetly recomend going for the audiobook.
Kenneth Branagh does an excellent job in making this well known novel fascinating and exciting. I loved how he was able to make me imagine the characters and made me wish to listen to the whole book.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
The new movie Hercules Poirot Kenneth Branagh’s dulcet tones bring Agatha Christie’s classic whodunnit to vivid life in this tantalising sampler. Branagh nails the mood effortlessly, his voice is easy to listen to and the various characters are clearly defined. Even in such a short excerpt, Christie manages to get over quite a lot of plot. I will definitely be seeking out the full version.
What a fantastic audio narration from Kenneth Branagh, the man himself. I’ve listened to and read Death on the Nile before and this one brings a fresh new feel to this Agatha Christie classic.
Not only is the story great, the plot immersive and suspenseful but coupled with Kenneth’s fantastic narration, it definitely makes for one great audiobook. He really does bring the words to life and right from the start, it’s incredibly easy to get into, even from brief listening. I love that there’s been a new release to mark the new film. Even if you know this book inside out, listening in this format is bound to bring something new to the experience.
Hard to review a nine minute sampler, but sounds interesting. Thank you #NetGalley for the audio sample.
