Insole has done it once again with a collection of short stories that cross the many genres and hits all the right marks.

Insole has a gift of mastering the short story which is not an easy task to do. His characters are well formed and three dimensional whilst the commentary and descriptive narrative hits all the right notes whilst not losing context. He really knows how to get under the skin of the reader and leave you haunted or with enough brain candy to swirl around your cortex long after you finish each story.

His stories mostly range from horror to Science fiction and he puts his own spin on classic tropes as ghosts, witches, phobias, etc but he has done something that most writers really have difficulty with and that is bringing something new to the table. This makes him an author to look out for as a new voice in horror as this generation has been needing a new voice for a long time and it looks like we may have found it.

Overall, this is really a book that should be read and relished and one that should get a lot of notice. Excellent stories and collection without a single weak story found within its pages. Even Stephen King doesn’t have that as there is always a number of weak stories in his collection. Joshua G J Insole, Footsteps in the Dark short stories to add to everyone’s book shelf.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of Footsteps in the Dark by Joshua G J Insole!!

This is a great collection of short horror stories! I didn’t realize until the end that the stories were all written from prompts. I really enjoyed reading this book!

There varied and interesting horror genres within these stories. It was a rollercoaster ride of the dark and gory. Some were scary whereas others just left you unsettled. Definitely a perfect book to read during Halloween when you are in the mood for a good scare. Beware not for the faint hearted!

I want to thank NetGalley, Joshua G. J. Insole and Tredition for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.

I really enjoyed this book full of short story horror. Even though some of these stories in this book weren't exactly scary they were still on the "unbelieveable" side. I feel like we stepped inside the authors brain and were given little files of stories they saved. There was some about demonophobia, summoning the devil, alien abduction, and so many more. I give this 4.5 stars. It was very enjoyable. Thank you again to Netgalley for an early release ebook version.

This book was the PERFECT read for a horror/sci-fi/thriller lover like me! It’s a collection of short stories and I 100% recommend if you’re into witches, vampires, aliens, zombies, ghosts, demons, and phobias. Some stories had some gruesome details so no weak tummies for this read! Again loved it from start to finish every story in this collection brought something new to the table and I could definitely play each story in my head like a movie! Intrigued by literally every single one!

Footsteps in the Dark was a creepy collection of short stories from the three-time Reedsy winner, Joshua G. J. Insole.

"In this collection of short stories, a woman defends house and husband from the home’s eight-legged inhabitants. Two strangers discuss music’s finer points as cannibals try to break into their car. A gender-reveal party goes off the rails as the true nature of the infant comes to light. Thirteen women gather at night to right the wrongs of society. A mother takes shelter in the family treehouse as the world ends around her."

To say these stories were frightening is to say the least. What was fun about these stories is how modern some of the premises were. For instance, the gender reveal party one was a horrifying, yet brilliant take on how dangerous gender-reveals can be in these trying times. I also loved how there were a lot of strong women taking charge in these stories whether it was trying to protect their loved ones from weird sci-fi creatures or trying to survive in a havoc wreaked world.

For anyone looking to immerse themselves in a fright-filled, refreshing horror take on short stories, I highly recommend diving into Footsteps in the Dark. You won't regret it.
