Curiouser and curiouser…. A delightful book which uses text and illustrations from Lewis Carol’s classic story. A combination of lateral thinking, word games, and number problems.
This was a fun, immersive puzzle book that interwove logic, maths, mazes and word puzzles into the story of Alice in Wonderland/Alice through the Looking Glass. The puzzles were tricky enough to make one think, while at the same time not too trick to be frustrating.
As well as excerpts from the original stories, the book also features the original illustrations, lending a charming, old-fashioned feel to a modern puzzle book. This would be a great gift book for a lover of the classic tale.
~Many thanks to NetGalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review~
Nice collection of a variety of puzzles, all of which were difficult enough to give me pause for thought without being too frustrating. Would work just as well with someone very familiar with the story who wanted to read it again in a different way (almost everyone, I'd imagine) or just someone who enjoys puzzle books. A good gift for a birthday or Christmas I'd imagine.
What a clever book! Dr Moore has taken extracts from Lewis Carroll's original text and then has written puzzles about the information contained within the excerpt.
This is a wonderful concept, that I think would be really enticing to reluctant readers - especially those who are mathematicians. This is the perfect way to get younger readers excited about classics but would also be an entertaining premise for adults.
This is a whimsical and interactive, illustrated romp through the stories of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll. The book takes sections of each book and ties it into a puzzle. There are mazes, rebus puzzles, and logic questions, some easy to guess, and others that take a little more thought. There are some conversions from the metric system you might have to do if you're in the US, but all solutions are provided. And did I mention the beautiful cover art! This is a welcome addition to any collector's shelf!

First off this is lovely - the cover is lovely, there were illustrations throughout which were a lovely and sometimes helpful addition. I was reading Alice this month and saw this available and knew I had to try it! I love puzzles, but I struggled a bit with who the intended audience was as some were extremely easy (potentially for children 8-12) and some seemed hard even for me as an adult. I did like how it felt like the puzzles were part of a story, and it worked seamlessly to click an answer and then navigate back to the next puzzle.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I love all things "Alice In Wonderland" so I was super excited to get my hands on this book. First off, how lovely is that cover!? ❤️ As for the book itself, it did not disappoint. I was especially pleased to see how truly interactive my digital version was. Sometimes these types of books can go all pearshape on digital devices, but there were plenty of interactive links that made navigating it a cinch. 👍🏻
The book was also visually pleasing, with plenty of original pen-and-ink illustrations by Sir John Tenniel. The puzzles themselves range from easy to more difficult, and there are plenty here to keep puzzle lovers happy for a good long while. Overall, I was well pleased with this book and would definitely give it a two thumbs up recommendation.

This is such a great book of various puzzles and riddles and just perfect for anyone who likes Alice in Wonderland. The book centres around Alice and her adventures in Wonderland. While meeting with certain characters, or going on her way somewhere, Alice is tasked with lots of puzzles such as trying to work out how many sips of a drink she has to take in order to fit through a door. Each puzzle is written in a way that makes you feel like you are following along with Alice’s adventure.
There are a lot of different types of puzzles, presented to you in a way that is part of Alice’s story as she ventures into the crazy world of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland ‘ and ‘Through the Looking Glass’. I love how each puzzle begins with the story but ends up being a puzzle you have to work out. An example of this is: while her on her way somewhere Alice comes across a path that forks and doesn’t know which way to go. She asks Tweedledum and Tweedledee, who are nearby, but one of them always lies when talking to her, so she has to work out which is the right way. There are lots of different questions featuring various characters from the books. The Mad Hatter, March Hare, Caterpillar and Tweedledum and Tweedledee, are among some of those that feature a lot. I love how each puzzle is different but centres around a problem that Alice needs to solve and it does test your logic and mathematical skills.
There are various puzzles, some of them logic, some mathematical, mazes, word ladders, and even some very simple puzzles that require common sense , though they are surprisingly harder to get than you think. I have to say I loved the rebus puzzles best as well as the logic ones (I love logic puzzles, you know, the type with a grid that you tick and cross according to the clues and the ones without a grid as the ones in this book are) but there are plenty of great puzzles for every taste. Each puzzle is accompanied by a picture from the original book, illustrated by Sir John Tenniel. These illustrations are so lovely to look at, some of them are so wonderful and detailed and I have to admit to not seeing many of the original illustrations before, but I’m pleased that they accompany each puzzle here as it adds to the enjoyment of this book.
All of the answers are in the back of the book but most of the book is filled with puzzles and very occasionally there are also excerpts from the original text. I loved reading these excerpts as I haven’t read the classic book yet, and some of these made me laugh and were just a perfect extra to accompany the puzzle book. Overall I would recommend this book for anyone who loves all sorts of puzzles and riddles and who also loves Alice in Wonderland. It’s a lovely book to get and one I’ll enjoy reading again, when my brain forgets some for the answers to the puzzles! :)
a truly engaging, well thought out puzzle collection that is sure to provoke critical thinking skills. i love the inclusion of john tenniel’s art.
We are loving these Alice in Wonderland puzzles. There is a good selection of types of puzzle but we like the logic ones best. This book has changed our conversations over the breakfast and dinner table. Challenging but still accessible to most of the older members of the family. It gets the brain working but not overheating ! The illustrations are great too.
Well thought out puzzles beautifully displayed through excerpts of the original novel. The digital set up worked well and made it super easy to check answers quicker than searching through a physical copy. Illustrations throughout really added to the overall effect of the book and the puzzles were a good mixture of easily guessed and difficult to work out which really throws you when you begin to overthink how simple an answer may be.
A lot of the puzzles are logic puzzles, but there are also word and number puzzles, so there is a good variety. The difficulty rating was quite broad, some of them harder than others, and there were several different types of puzzle to test the reader, although the format of many of them was repeated for a number of puzzles. Fans of Alice in Wonderland will also enjoy that several of the puzzles rely on having some knowledge of the original text, although there are plenty that don't for those less familiar with the book who just enjoy doing puzzles.
With thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book in return for an honest review.
Alice in Wonderland Puzzles is an engaging collection of puzzles and brain teasers by Dr. Gareth Moore. Due out 1st March 2022 from Arcturus Publishing, it's 256 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.
This is a nice collection of varied puzzles, over 130 in all and of varying difficulty, from mild to moderate. The puzzles have some nice tie-ins to the canonical books, and are also liberally enhanced by Sir John Tenniel's wonderful original illustrations. The puzzles themselves include word ladders, logic puzzles, mazes, anagrams, and chessboard visual puzzles. Disappointingly there are no -actual- chess puzzles, beloved of Lewis Carrol and fans.
With the ebook version, there are active links to the answer keys from the individual puzzle pages as well as a hyperlink from the answer back to the puzzle.
Five stars. Charming and worthwhile. A good choice for puzzle mavens as well as Carrol fans.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
What a lot of fun this book is! The puzzles vary in difficulty and in type, and I"d especially love to pull them out for a family road trip. The author's use of the Alice in Wonderland story and illustrations brought a playful, smart tone to the collection.

A delightful book packed with assorted puzzles on the theme of Wonderland. The puzzles include logic problems, word ladders, maths puzzles and mazes amongst others. The book is illustrated with the original John Tenniel drawings and includes excerpts from the Lewis Carroll stories. There is plenty in this book to keep you entertained for hours. This would make an ideal gift.
A brilliant little puzzle book based on Alice in wonderland. A great mixture of puzzles that get the mind thinking.
I love puzzles and I love Alice in Wonderland so this was a win win for me. Some of the puzzles were easier and some were mega hard but still really enjoyable. A perfect puzzle book for people who love challenging themselves or fellow alice fans.
This is a cute little book of puzzles. Well, maybe little isn't the right word because it's jam packed. It's a fun variety of puzzles and include chunks of the story. It makes for a fun twist on a puzzle book.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Alice in Wonderland Puzzles by Dr. Gareth Moore is a very innovative adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Along with the story and the original ink illustrations, this book also includes word puzzles, logic puzzles, and occasionally visual puzzles like mazes. According to the description, you will "travel with Alice down the rabbit hole into the fantastic world of Wonderland, and help a cast of extraordinary characters solve these tantalising puzzles and enigmas."
Overall, Alice in Wonderland Puzzles is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, especially if you're a fan of Alice in Wonderland. One highlight of this book is how easy it is to navigate the Kindle version, which is the version that I downloaded. After several pages of story, there is a puzzle and then a "button" to click called "See Answer." After I click that, I am taken to the answer to the puzzle, and below that is a button called "Go Back," which takes me back to the story. This was flawless execution and made it easy to navigate between puzzle and answer. I did take off 1 star, because I was expecting more visual puzzles, but most of the puzzles were word puzzles. If you're intrigued by the description, or if you're looking for a gift for a puzzle fan, I recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in March!
Loved the puzzles in this book, managed to get my kid involved in doing these puzzles with me on the way to school in the mornings. Each one is different from the last and has a varying levels of difficulty.
I found that I was a little saddened when I had to do the more "physical" but this is more me wanting to experience the puzzles in person rather than trying to mentally map them out.
There's a great variety of puzzles and each of them offers a different experience overall. Great book for anyone looking to expand their horizons a little bit. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for something to do with family and friends.
