My 7 year old is just about done reading these types of books and it makes me sad! I love the illustrations and the thought behind everything. Even in areas where the wording is simple, there is still so much more.
A sweet read, perfect for inquisitive souls, young and old..
Told in flowing prose Mr Elephant tells us about himself, from his big ears to his rough skin, long trunk and a taste for prickly food. It is accessible with clear, well laid out illustrations, adding to the telling and will be perfect for reading along with younger children. .It is a thought provoking read, encouraging questions in children.
I will be recommending this book as an enjoyable and educational read.
Ever Wondered Why Elephants Have Long Trunks and Wrinkly Skin?
Mr Elephant is a children's book that consists of several different questions aimed at Mr Elephant in which Mr Elephant is happy to explain.
The kids (Miss 9, Mr 4 and Mr 3) raised many ideas and questions throughout the book such as, can we go to the desert? - How much water would we need to take? Can we see an elephant? What would it be like to have a trunk instead of a nose? They also enjoyed seeing other animals in the book, the boys in particular loved seeing their favourites; a lion 🦁 (Mr 4) and a giraffe 🦒 (Mr 3).
It also touches on the aspect of poaching, and what poachers do. I had to delicately explain what poachers are and what they do to animals, in particular elephants for this book.
Mr Elephant by Sarah Glover is out now.
Thank you to Netgalley and Matador for the digital copy of Mr Elephant for us to read and review.
Mr Elephant is a children's book that lovingly explains everything about elephants, from their memory to their rough skin to the way they act and interact. To see elephants as intelligent, brave and strong animals, it helps us -- young and old -- understand their value and to appreciate them as the smart creatures they are.
Wouldn't it be great for this become a series, for each endangered or at risk for poaching animal, to share the worth of these beautiful beings on Planet Earth?
I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley and Madador Publishers, in exchange for an honest review. And honestly, I loved this.
We looked at this book together today after school. My daughter both liked the story and illustrations and found the facts good. She said she liked it and wants to read more about other animals.
Such a cute story! My son loved it and the illustrations were my favorite part. I loved the importance of talking about poaching and hopefully this will educate our younger generation for years to come on what they can do to help!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed the illustrations of this book. I liked how they were hand drawn with colouring pencils. It gave the book a very accessible & unique feel, which was nice. I’m a big fan of elephants and so is my daughter, so this was a fun book to read with her. It was educational, and I appreciated all the facts strewn into the book.
That said, I felt like sometimes the rhyming was a little off, too many syllables here or there to get into a good rhythm reading to my daughter. I also felt like a couple of the themes jumped a little too fast & didn’t quite hit the head on the nail. For instance, at one point the author rhymes a question about the elephant’s skin, but then immediately follows it up with a fact that, as written, doesn’t answer the question at all. After looking it up online later, it does make sense, but I would have appreciated the book to address the “why” of their own question a little more in the rhyme.
I LOVED the call to action at the end of the book though and that a portion of the proceeds are going to help protect the elephants. Our children are our future and it’s important to inform them when something they love might be threatened. Overall, I think the author/illustrator did a great job and I would recommend this book.
This was such a cute little book. I loved the colored pencil-type illustrations. I felt like we really learned why elephants are the way they are, but also how we can help keep them around. I love that helping our planet and helping to save the elephants is the true lesson here. The colorful drawings and cute rhymes will help teach kids that taking care of our planet and our wildlife are important.
I enjoyed reading this book to my niece, while she enjoyed the beautiful illustrations.
Every child all over the world should have access to this little book, and my niece had tears in her eyes as I tried to explain what happens to the elephants for their tusks.
She enjoyed hearing how their skin gets so rough. Also how they have maps in their brains.
Yes, I highly recommend this book, and my niece is 4 while the recommended age is 5 to 7, so it depends on the child.
I received this book through Net Galley and Madador Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review.
