I found this book to be on the slow side, not too good for an impatient reader like me .The book was okay not a fantastic read ,I can't rave about it, and I am disappointed that I didn't enjoy it more.
Emotional Rollercoaster…
The re- investigation of a disappearance turns Mina’s life rocky in this compelling and atmospheric suspense. When her sister disappeared, Mina was thrust into the public spotlight and is now a reclusive adult with negative thoughts. Investigator Lane eventually wins her trust but does he have his own agenda? What really happened? With a tightly woven storyline this is an immersive, emotional rollercoaster with a well crafted cast.
Thank-you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
I was hooked from the very first page; the tension in the small.town of Nannine is palpable as soon as we meet Mina and you just have to read on.
Character led, the story centres around the case of Mina's sister, who disappeared 19 years ago and the private investigator desperate to solve it, Lane Holland. Mina is a complex woman, with a lot of insecurities and resentment, and when she meets up with Lane, who has similar issues, sparks fly. Gradually, secrets are unearthed and the case of missing Evie moves forward, but with a gut wrenching ending. Totally absorbing and it absolutely transports you right there to the Australian outback.
I enjoyed this book, I liked the way the plot unfolded and I found the characters relatable. Plenty of suspense to keep me enthralled Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book..
A thrilling read for any fans of Crime, Thrillers and Drama.
One sister searching for her missing sibling and one private investigator who would do anything to find out the truth.
This book is very well written, and has very impressive descriptions about the Australian Outback.
The twist at the end was one I wasn't expecting, very poignant.
Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A really great story which keeps you enraptured from start to finish. There is so many different options within the book to keep you interested.
I very interesting plot and very well organised storytelling. I really enjoyed reading this book. Would recommend it
Both the characters and the outback Australia settings in this book are compelling and characterised with real skill and detail. The story has a double strand, with private investigator Lane hoping to claim the huge reward offered by Mina McCreery to the person who can solve the mystery of the disappearance of her nine year old twin sister many years before. Lane also has his personal reasons for finding the culprit and getting him put away for the rest of his life. The story is a true picture of life in a hot, dusty and slow moving town in outback New South Wales, with the changing climate causing deep despair for its inhabitants. It is also a story of love, loss, guilt, remorse and revenge, and will keep the reader engrossed - there a just a few occasions where the story moves a little too slowly and loses momentum, but it soon picks up the pace again.
Lane is investigating the disappearance of Muna’s twin sister when they were children. It is soon clear that he has his own motives and trauma to deal with. He’s actually quite good at his job and soon finds leads that haven’t been spotted before. The ending was exciting but seemed to come out of the blue a bit and be quite a character change for Lane. The best part of the book was the evocation of life in a hot climate where the nearest towns are 3 hours drive away. Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC.
A novel where the Outback is as much a character as the people inhabiting it. Little girls have gone missing over a period of several years, and Lane - an ex-policeman, with secrets, and issues, - makes a career of attempting to find them. Would highly recommend this.
With thanks to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton
Wake looks at what can happen when people's private tragedies become public property, and the ripples of trauma that follow violent crimes. A very fast paced, action packed story with lots of craziness and suspense to keep you reading straight to the very end! Highly recommend!
Layers of relationships, action and inactions, lies and half truths are peeled away in this absorbing thriller. It explores the reverberations of a disappearance and the ways in which people cope with tragedy. Hard to put down or stop thinking about. Shelley Burr elegantly introduces possibilities and solutions then whisks any certainties away. The Outback setting is vividly drawn and fans of Jane Harper and Chris Hammer will really enjoy. Thank you to Hodder and Stoughton and Netgalley for providing an ARC in return for an unbiased review.
This is an absolutely outstanding book. Drawn by the comment that funds of June Harper would enjoy it I decided to give it a go. I wasn’t disappointed in the least. The character portrayal is outstandingly good. The layers of mystery over many years meant that the outcome was difficult to foresee and all in all it was a brilliant treat and I would recommend it to anyone who likes an enthralling in-depth engagement with well portrayed characters in a brilliant setting. I hugely enjoyed the sense of remoteness evoked by the author. This is a definite five star raid and a contender for my favourite book of the year.
Incredibly, long drawn out story, complex with intense characters. Didn't keep my attention ,could have been told in half the words.
Very good. I liked the setting, in rural Australia and the way the characters backstories came together. It was well paced and believable.
Gripping from the outset...everyone has a theory of what happened to Evelyn- including me but it turns out many were wrong (also including me).
The journey to the truth, via both Lane and Mina's perspectives is rocky and the twists along the way leave you doubting the truth will ever come out.
Great characters and a plot that provides plenty of suspects make this a book you will not be able to put down and that will stay with you for days after you read the final pages.
Evelyn McCreery disappeared one night after the town fair, from a farm isolated for miles. No one saw her, no traces of an intruder and what happened has remained a mystery for 20 years. Lane Holland arrives in town with the purpose of solving the cold case, he is faced with hostility and scepticism but slowly Mina, Evelyn’s sister, warms to Lane and his mission. Lane also has a personal reason to find out what happened to Evelyn.
A really gripping read and hard to putdown. I warmed to the main characters and really hoped for a happy ever after ending. The ending took a twist I wasn’t expecting (or hoping for) which made it bitter sweet. But would highly recommend this book and will be looking for kore to read by Shelley Burr.
Loved, loved, loved! Thos was so unlike anything else I've read recently. It's a really clever plot and is delivered in a very engaging way. The characters well well written and unique and I really did care what happened and became quite invested. I liked the pace, its not all big dramatic twists and turns or all these unrealistic events unfolding one after the other but it's also not so slow that it drags along. It keeps you engaged and wanting to find out more. I also liked the atmosphere that was created and its so beautifully written that you do really lose yourself in the story and the location. Definitely recommend, an amazing read for amfans of any genre
Really enjoyed this and very very different to what I was expecting. I'd started to guess fairly early on that the investigator had some personal connection to the case, but it was really well written. Really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this, and really liked the concept of a PI using cold cases to try and find his own father guilty of something.
The missing persons cases were interesting and well described and everyone's emotions and actions felt authentic. Plus I liked the outback setting as a change.
We were well drawn into the characters lives and I felt invested in them and their outcomes. Which made the ending rather downbeat as there wasn't a happy ending for anyone, not one person. Although there was closure which was satisfying.
So, a good read and I would buy another by this author.
