The artwork in this book is absolutely phenomenal.
Graphic novels are something I absolutely love reading so I was very excited to get this one approved.
Silk hills is a dark, twisted horror tale told through the most detailed and mesmerising drawings.
The attention to detail is something I was really amazed by,
In terms of storytelling I thought this one was very clever.
I did find it a little hard to follow at times especially on the busier pages as sometimes the storyline tended to jump and I would have to go back and forth.
But for the artwork alone I will be picking up more of these artists works.
Thanks so much for the copy of this book.
A really solid and interesting graphic novel! In the vein of twin peaks but definitely has something distinctive and original to offer. A big fan too of the modern art style!
This horror graphic novel weaves a trippy tale of a backwoods town mystery and at its center, a veteran who now contracts herself out for hire charged with finding a missing youth. She finds much more than she bargained for grappling with the town's dark secrets. The art in this graphic novel is stunning. The psychedelic drug-induced sequences flow easily and aren't confusing, the body horror is truly gross and unsettling. The breakdown for me in the plot was that the main character didn't quite grab me like I think she could have, and the central relationship feels too rushed and unbelievable. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think that all horror fans (especially body horror fans) would do well to look out for this title and experience it for themselves.
Beth arrives in Silk Hills and weird stuff starts happening. 😨
This horror graphic novel has a very specific style that lends itself really well to this style of horror. 🧐
At least I was freaking out and I am glad I read this in broad daylight. 😱
Also, I don't like moths anymore. 😬
With thanks to Ryan Ferrier, Brian Level and Oni Press for an advanced readers copy of this book.
4*
A really enjoyable creepy read!
The graphic follows Beth Wills, a private investigator hired to solve the disappearance of a local teenager. But Beth's investigation takes her on a journey filled with drugs, bugs and a host of cookie characters.
Pros
- Great rep, race and LGBT
- The style of art really lends to the mystery
- Great storyline
Thank you to @netgalley and @OniPress for the advanced copy of this beaut in exchange for an honest review. (Also posted on my book review IG account @dark.oracle.reads and Goodreads on 4/13)
This graphic novel has been compared to Twin Peaks, and although I’m not a fan of that series, I *am* a big fan of eerie backwoods country weirdness, which is the vibe of this story.
The mystery here is really unique, but unfortunately it failed to completely connect with me. I never got to a point where I was “all in” with wanting to figure out exactly what was going on, and many of the sequences were just plain confusing. The characters seemed a little too on-the-nose for my tastes.
As far as the illustrations are concerned, there’s some pretty disturbing images that I appreciated. And the color palettes at points are *chef’s kiss* (just *look* at this cover!)
All-in-all, a pretty adequate exercise in graphic horror, but nothing more. Although this one didn’t completely blow me away, it still makes for a perfect addition to any graphic novel shelf, and as a complete fiend for horror illustrations, I will definitely be checking out the next in this series.
I unfortunately really didn't like this. I wanted to like this so badly but just everything fell flat for me.
Silk hills is a dark and twisted graphic novel for everyone who isn’t afraid of moths.
l really liked the drawing style and the colors and how they changed throughout the story. The vibrant colors made the dark story a little less disturbing.
I am very easily scarred and the story and the amazing art work really creeped me out at just the right moments.
l also really liked Beth as the main character and her attitude.
The story itself was very fast paced. l really couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting. I really hope that the book gets turned into a series because it really has the potential. It also would make a really good series of movie!
And I want to thank NetGalley and Oni Press for the arc.
I was very excited I got a copy of this as a fan of both X-Files and Twin Peaks and I must admit, I wasn’t disappointed! The storyline was weird and several times I thought what the heck is going on which is the same as what I said while watching Twin Peaks. While saying it’s weird, it’s also interesting enough to keep me reading. I loved the graphics, the coloring of the story seemed to fit with the odd narrative and creates a sort of dream-like atmosphere while reading. And I LOVE the moths! The moth dust as a drug was unique and certainly created quite the effect! The only thing I didn’t like was the romance between the two characters. I thought it was unnecessary and a little unbelievable that they could’ve created such a strong bond in a short amount of time. And didn’t Beth have a partner back at home? Did we just forget about that?!
Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I received a copy of this graphic novel through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Creepy-crawly story with confusing plot and grotesque scenes. It had a Twin Peaks vibe with the supernatural element but at the same time the uncertainty that it’s not all imagined by drug-addled mind in the darkness of the night. 😶🌫️
I didn’t exactly like it but I was invested in it enough to figure out what is real and what is imagined. Not sure what happened in the end though but mostly I got the sense of the story. Quite disturbing…😃
Thanks to the publishers for sharing this one. It was hard to know what to say about it because it's such a strange story, but I liked it. My full review appears on Weekend Notes.
Welcome to silk hills!
Beth a marine veteran now private investigator has been hired by Mr. Partridge a wealthy lumber mill owner in Silk Hills an Appalachian town, to find his lost son Abel.
Silk Hill is a small town that relies on tourists coming through to buy their Moth Man memorabilia.
While on her search for Abel things start to get really weird, and creepy especially in the woods. The town is hiding something and Beth is determined to find out what.
This was a wild ride!
Let me just start off by saying the cover for this is so cool,it instantly drew me in!
This was a really weird, creepy and psychedelic read but in the best way possible!
I really loved this, the art style I feel worked really well with the plot especially the trippy scenes. The gore was *chefs kiss* and let’s just say I’m never going to look at a deer the same way ever again.
Also if you are anything like me and love the x files and the moth man then do yourself a favor and read this!
I don’t want to give too much away because I feel like with this it’s best to go in not knowing much.
*The only reason I didn’t give this five stars was because I wish we got just a little bit more information about certain things. Personally some things went over my head and I feel like if things were a bit more explained I would’ve enjoyed this more!
I also am not sure if this is a one shot or going to be a series, but if it does turn into a series I hope we get some more information because this would be an amazing series!
Thank you so much NetGalley,Onipress, Ryan Ferrier, Brian Level, Kate Sherron and anyone else who had a hand in granting me permission to read this ARC in exchange for an honest and unbiased review!

First of all, the art in this book is equally creepy and lovely. I can imagine fans of the Mothman will be eager to pick up this story. It's simple yet interesting. It almost felt like reading a campfire store or reading an episode of some creepy TV show. I really liked it. I liked the simplicity of the story, but the creepiness present. I was definitely shivering with disgust more than once. Overall, I would definitely recommend horror fans to check this out.
This graphic novel was super weird and the art was really graphic and sometimes disturbing. I know those sound like bad things, but I really enjoyed this bizarre read!
Thanks to Oni Press for this incredible discovery. I loved it! ❤️
The horror aspect is more disturbing/weird than gory. Yes, it's SUPER disturbing, in a very visceral way 😂. I loved the author's drawing style. I loved this trope of a small town with all its big mystical secrets, this outsider who comes to investigate, all the fantastic+investigation aspects, and finally, the open ending which is very reminiscent of Twin Peaks, indeed.
The little extra that always pleases, the queer aspect 👍.
I agree with other reviewers though. Personally, I loved it but this won't be for everyone.
I'll wait and post my definitive review in May.
Interesting art work. However not my cup of tea. Definetly horror as it's very creepy and gruesome. However I was left confused reading the entire thing .
First, thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me access to this book.
You know? I'm a huge fan of horror graphic novels, so I couldn't wait to read this but I have to say that this really was a weird trip (yes, pun intended).
Silk Hills uses some common tropes like a little town with a lot of secrets and who to trust. I will admit these are some of my favorite tropes so I'm a bit sad that it didn't quite work for me. Because we also have the gore and the grittiness (A LOT OF IT ACTUALLY) but sometimes the story felt quite disjointed.
Probably because of all the hallucinatory sequences but I felt that everything was a little bit all over the place. Also I found myself actually quite disgusted with the body horror, which doesn't happen often.
A note is that I actually didn't mind the art, is quite cartoonish but it fits with the hallucinations. Didn't hate it and didn't love it either.
Overall if you are looking for some weird horror, Silk Hills has your back.
Thank you, NetGalley for the chance to read and review the ARC for Silk Hills by Brian Level and Ryan Ferrier.
Beth Wills, a private investigator, goes to Silk Hills, a small Appalachian town that's seen better days since the mines were abandoned, to find a missing boy. Of course, she didn't expect all the Stranger Things type stuff that was going down there!
We're told pretty early that Beth is running from her past; a war veteran who was traumatized by her experience of being trapped underground in a cave. She's done with new york city and picks up this gig in Silk Hills. When she gets there she finds out that the town itself is pretty ugly on the inside (the way all small American towns in media are). It's also home to some really interesting moths and 'Dust,' a drug made from the scales of these moths. As she searches for the boy we're not sure if what she's seeing is real, or a hallucination because of the dust.
I'm not a big graphic novel fan, but this one was pretty interesting. I'm also not the biggest fan of the illustrations in this book, not through any fault of their own but just because they're not my style. That doesn't mean that there weren't some really beautiful ones in this book because there were.
We also end on a cliffhanger, and I'm very sure I'll read the next one in this series!
**Disclaimer: I recieved a free eARC of Silk Hills by Ryan Ferrier through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this opportunity.
Silk Hills by Ryan Ferrier is a horror graphic novel about a private investigator who goes to a small Appalachian town in order to investigate the disappearance of the son of the lumber mill owner. She soon learns that things are not what they seem. Silk Hills is set to publish on May 24th, 2022. I rated it four stars on Goodreads.
Here's the summary from Goodreads:
This atmospheric and stylish mystery set in the Appalachian region is perfect for fans of Twin Peaks, The X-Files, and Sons of the Devil.
When Beth Wills comes to Silk Hills, a small Appalachian town that's seen better days since the mines were abandoned, she expected a bit of culture shock... But not like this! Beth is someone who has a talent for finding people who don't want to be found, and when she's called to Silk Hills by a local titan of industry, she can tell that something's not right. Little does she know...
Silk Hills was once booming, but the only reason people tend to come through town anymore is to buy Mothman merchandise. Before long, Beth finds out just how wrong things can get in the woods, as her search for a missing troubled youth finds her running afoul of the local drug trade, too-friendly creepers, a very sinister deer, and psychoactive moth dust.
I'm not really sure what drew me to request this book and I have to admit there's a tiny part of me that wishes that I had not because it's super disturbing in a lot of ways. Admittedly, it's definitely a horror graphic novel and I should have known that going into the novel that it would probably be a bit twisted.
Despite kind of wishing that I hadn't read it, I did find that I enjoyed it. I ended up giving it four stars on Goodreads because the story had me wanting to know what was going to happen next and how the story would all resolve. I liked the main character, Beth. I thought that the story did a good. job of developing who she was and her characterization. It was very well written in that aspect.
I also feel like the world-building was really well done. The atmosphere was very much there, and it gave off a very eerie feeling. The art style also really supported this. It kept you on your toes and not quite settled. The use of colour was quite minimal and really helped support the environment. There were some angles that the characters were drawn from that I found a little bit strange, but I imagine there was a reason for why they were drawn that way.
It was a pretty twisted story and had me wanting to look away or hide behind my hands like if I was watching a horror movie. I wasn't really scared, but I was unsettled.
If you're at all interested in the premise, I highly recommend that you check it out when it comes out in May.
Absolutely loved! A chilling tale with the perfect illustrations to go with it.
The writing was incredible but not the best part the story tied up so well together I absolutely fell in love with it!
