The Will is a domestic thriller with lots of twists and surprises. You engage slowly into a book to meet all the family members who may have inherited this amazing mansion in Roxborough House. The Roxborough is not only a building, but it is a piece of history, memories, and it will change the life of the new owner. I couldn’t guess if the game had been settled as part of the will or something else. Lot of twists and surprises and stories to know about. I enjoyed reading about the family members, their lives, what have changed and how it influenced them. None of them is the same, had similar reasons why the Roxborough should belong to them. The reasons where different – money, memories, past events, passion.. but there are no rules settled who should inherited it, no age or hierarchy. You of course meet the excentric aunt Cecily Mordaunt, previous owner and her hidden secrets. After her death, the family dinner will open the chaotic process.
Really compelling read, with the chaotic timeline – but it gave more taste to the story by knowing family members from now and then. Hard to put down as there were so many tensions and questions, kept me hooked to the last page.
Highly recommended to the thriller fans.
Thank you NetGalley, the author and publisher of ARC of this book for providing an honest review.
I recently read “The Will” by Rebecca Reid and found it to be a captivating family drama filled with secrets, deceit, and complex characters. The story centers around the Mordaunt family and their grand estate, Roxborough Hall. After the matriarch, Cecily, passes away, her family gathers to learn the contents of her will, leading to unexpected revelations and conflicts.
What I particularly enjoyed was the intricate weaving of each character’s backstory and their hidden agendas, which added depth and kept me hooked until the end. The historical elements tied into the characters’ motives were fascinating and well-executed. While the number of characters can be a bit overwhelming at first, each one is distinct and contributes significantly to the plot.
Overall, “The Will” is a gripping read that I would recommend to anyone who loves a good domestic thriller with plenty of twists and turns. It’s a story about family, legacy, and the dark secrets that can bind or break them apart
Thank you Netgalley and I'm sorry I took so long to read this, this was a fun read and very well written although I didn't connect to any of the characters which made it harder to stay focused. I look forward to seeing more from this author though.
Wow! This was amazing. I don't even know how to describe it.
The story was so different, more of a mystery than any kind of thriller, but it kept me enthralled and I raced through it. I wanted to keep reading well into the night but find reading with eyes closed doesn't work so well.
It all tied up nicely at the end, every single interesting detail was answered. There were a lot of characters but for a change it didn't seem to get too muddled or confusing. I really can't wait to read another by this author
Phew, this is a highly entertaining read but word of advice, either have a notepad at hand or take yourself of somewhere quiet so you can concentrate because with a cast of around 12 plus characters, all giving their POVs and narratives, it gets kind of confusing. This book definitely needed a cast list!
Roxboroigh House is a huge stately home, left to a family member after the death of the current owner. Cecily Mordaunt To the shock and dismay (and disgust) of the family it wasn't passed down by age or heirarchy, just by who the owner felt who most deserved it, was most worthy. The family are told this at a group dinner where they are all given letters explaining the situation.
Of course utter chaos and resentment ensues, no one is happy with the decision in the slightest.
Every owner over the past 200 hundred years has said what a millstone around their neck the house is. It's monstrously big with many rooms and quarters. It's a full time job, a life dedication that is a constant burden, so why would anyone actually want ot?
Once I managed to get my brain untangled and understanding of the mass of characters and their relationships to each other (about 30% in) I could not put this down. It was a totally compelling read that had me hooked. The characters are so well executed and cover every personality going.
The storyline held my interest throughout and the range of timelines, in no order, added to the overall readability massively. Going right back to the now deceased Cecily's childhood, the funeral of Cecily and right up to the Now where the Mordaunt family are at loggerheads, willing to do anything to claim what is rightfully theirs.
A tale full to the brim of secrets galore that had me second guessing and Cross referencing the whole way through.
Thanks to netgalley and Random House UK for the ARC
Thank you Random House and Netgalley and sorry I took so long to read this - work got in the way.
I was really interested to read this book as I work in a solicitors in the private client team doing Wills, estates and trusts!
This was a good read and I found myself engrossed in the story. and it was well written. The the characters were good too, I look forward to following this author's journey and reading more by Rebecca.
I'm so annoyed with myself that I left it so long to pick this book up because it was so good and I loved it! This novel follows eight members of the Mordaunt family who are gathering for the funeral of the matriarch and are waiting to find out who will inherit that family home. This is one of those books where no one is particularly likeable and everyone seems to have secrets and ulterior motives but that is what made it so good! This was soo hard to put down because there was so much tension as you wait to find out what is going to happen and what the fallout is going to be. There is so much to this book and I didn't see much of it coming, which I loved. I definitely recommend this one!
The Mordaunts are not like most families ... For one their family home is Roxborough Hall an old mansion in the Norfolk countryside. The other thing is The Will, with this family's tradition the house doesn't just get passed from parent to child - but to the family member deemed most worthy!! And everyone wants it and they are willing to do anything to get it.
This was such a compelling read .The story is told from several people's POV's and over several years and it draws you in and doesn't let go until the end.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
One family. Eight letters. Who will get what they deserve...?
What a thoroughly entertaining read. Reading about wills and entails was slightly reminiscent of the early "Downton Abbey" days when no one knew who was to take up the reigns as Downton's heir apparent, with the estate being entailed down the line to male heirs. THE WILL is somewhat different in that respect...in a lot of respects, in fact...with the entail being decided by she who now holds the reigns.
The Mordaunt family extended have been summoned. Matriarch Cecily Mordaunt has died. And now the fate of Roxborough Hall on its sprawling Norfolk estate lay with the entail. A letter to each of them explaining why he or she did or not inherit the beautiful historic stately home. This is how it has always been done since the 1600s. A letter is given to all those in line to inherit with the one deemed most worthy to receive it bequeathed the vast estate. So who will it be?
David, the eldest but rather pompous son, and his ghastly second wife Bryony? Or maybe it's the youngest son, aging playboy Grant? It couldn't be Cecily's only daughter Elspeth, who hasn't graced Roxoborough's halls for three decades vowing never to return...could it? Or what about the grandchildren? David's daughters from his first marriage - Lizzie and Willa? Or even Jonty, Grant's adopted son? Who of these are the most deserving? Who wants Roxoborough the most? And who needs it the most? And more importantly, what plans do each of them have for Roxborough should they inherit?
Overseeing everything is Cecily's lifelong companion Violet, who first joined her as a ladies maid on her 21st birthday in the 1958. But what if Cecily left Roxborough to Violet? Surely not? She is, when all is said and done, basically a servant. A servant? Owning Roxborough Hall? The family would be a laughing stock. But who knows with flighty Cecily?
THE WILL is a twisty character-driven whogetsit with a vast array of character hopefuls. Almost everyone has a reason for wanting Roxborough but only one of them will get it. Who will it be?
I quite enjoyed this romp through the Norfolk countryside by way of Roxborough Hall. I did guess one major plot twist involving two of the characters and what a long buried secret meant to them. But the reason everyone has gathered to find out which one of them has been bequeathed Roxborough is the piece-de-resistance in a clever fait accompli delivered by Cecily herself.
A deliciously deviled tale filled to the brim with secrets. I especially love the flashback chapters which might seem a bit random at first but their place within the story comes at exactly the right time. Thoroughly entertaining.

Read this in one sitting. Enjoyed how each character's story was entwined. It had the air of Cluedo but rather than whodunnit, it was a case of who would inherit. There will be character's you dislike and some you're rooting for. Overall very enjoyable. Have already ordered other books by this author.
Absolutely loved this book!
The writing style was really good and I look forward to reading any other books from this author in the future :)
The Will
Cecily Mordaunt is dead. On the evening of her funeral, her family gathers for dinner to be given a letter, revealing who is the next to inherite Roxborough Hall.
The house is a burden, a millstone, a full-time job . . . but they all want it. And some are willing to do anything to get it.
One family. Eight letters. Who will get what they deserve?
This book had me hooked from the start. The twists I did not see coming, and I flew through this book. The flip between timelines and different perspectives kept me wanting to keep reading. Would definitely recommend it.
Thank you to Netgalley, Random House UK, and Rebecca Reid for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was such an interesting read! I found myself so engrossed in the story, the characters had such incredible arcs, and I can't wait to follow this author's journey!
A fast paced family mystery, with plenty of twists & turns. Every time I thought I'd figured out the next twist it changed to something different. There were plenty of characters, but all were well rounded and you got their personality and the family dynamic. A few points were mentioned to build suspense, like the scratched photos and the bee hive but we never actually understood why they happened. A few plot holes but overall enjoyable
A intriguing plot but a lot of characters. A list of characters in the beginning of the book would be helpful to keep up with who is who. It starts out slow but steadily picks up speed with a few twisty turns and guessing games.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Interesting characters and the description of the settings was so real you felt you could imagine exactly where it was.
Twists and turns in the book and had me guessing until the end as to who had done what..
Will definitely read another book by this author again.
This is a twisty action packed thiller. It had me gripped instantly and flying through the chapters as fast as I possibly could. This dark family drama is full of twists and turns that had you questioning everything you are told throughout the novel. I would never have expected that ending and I feel we NEED a sequel,
.
Excellent book! Kept me guessing throughout! Thank you for letting me read this. I did not see the twists and turns coming! Some very likeable and I likeable characters in this book! 4 stars from me
Many thanks to Netgalley, Random House UK, Transworld Publishers and Penguin for my ARC in exchange for an honest review. The Will is like a twisted teen soap opera, just dark enough for me. Would definitely recommend it.
This was an enjoyable read with interesting and complex characters. The setting was very vivid, and was brought to life well by the author. The plot was solid and the ending was not what I was expecting, although I did guess a few of the twists and turns along the way.
I’d definitely read another book by this author again.
With thanks to the publisher, Netgalley and author for the ARC.
