This was such a beautiful book for me and my little one. It really helped me to teach my child essential skills.
We all want our children to learn how to do tasks independently, so I love the idea of this book. It was great having a picture for each step, and I loved the diverse children represented within the pictures. For me, some of these steps needed to be broken down and explained more I think for kids to have actual success with them. For example, the one putting on socks and shoes. My children always need help understand how to face their socks, so they go on correctly. How to tell the difference between the left shoe, and the right shoe, etc. So while the idea and concept are good, I actually think the steps needed to be broken down more.
This book admittedly feels a little hard to review as an E-book, some of the interactive elements obviously weren't available to try out and the formatting was strange in this edition, with pages coming out of order.
Thank you Storey Publishing and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
"I did it myself!" is a great resource for parents trying to teach their children independence. The book is marketed for children age 2-5 and contains age-appropriate activities that children can learn to do independently. This includes things like hand-washing, putting on clothing, greeting others, and blowing your nose.
I loved the real-life pictures that correspond to each step for each activity. They made it very easy to introduce my toddler to the activities. I also appreciated that children of all different ages, genders, and races were used in the photos, making the book very inclusive. The little sliders for kids to use when they've mastered an activity are perfect for building kid's sense is accomplishment.
There is a small section for parents with tips on how to introduce the activity, as well as a corresponding website with more information. One thing I think would be helpful to include are tips on what to do if the child refuses the activity or wants you to do everything for them. I feel like this is a common problem when introducing Montessori activities and would love advice on it.
Overall, this book is thoughtful, applicable, and intentionally made. It is a great resource for parents wanting to implement Montessori practices into their home.
This book gives very simple ways for children to do tasks independently. It gives step by step instructions for children and has a simple picture for each instruction. My children liked looking at all the things they could do themselves and were eager to try them!
If you want a book to encourage your toddler/preschooler to be more self-sufficient with their self-care, then this is the book for you! It's a step-by-step guide to better help the child(ren) in your life be more independent in ways that help them learn and boost their self-esteem. with a sliding chart included so that they can "check off" the things they've done and know what they need to do next.
Thank you NetGalley and Storey Publishing for allowing me to receive and review this title!
A very sweet book to encourage independence in young children. I loved that the book was filled with step by step pictures of real children doing real tasks. I think this book will be very compelling for toddlers and preschoolers.
This is a wonderful book, and series, to teach children life skills. As an Occupational Therapist and also a parent, we are always breaking down activities into manageable steps, and that’s just what this book does - complete with clear photos! Children have such a sense of pride when they can do something for themselves. Highly recommend this book and all of the books in this series.
I liked it and would buy it for my niece's and nephew's but only as a physical copy. Not suitable as an ebook
This book is ideal for parents, guardians, caregivers, teachers, or other adults involved with helping children develop life skills. Colorful pictures along with simple instructions demonstrate how kids can develop independence and do things for themselves. Topics include getting dressed, grooming skills, and social skills. Kids from difference cultures, genders, and races are shown in the photos. The book includes a reference section for adults as well as a chart for assessing progress and websites for additional information.

I am honestly obsessed with these books. I truly believe these should be in all homes and daycare. Helping children become independent, especially with self-help, is so important. These books give clear directions, step by step, on what to do. The pictures are great, they show exactly what it looks like for each step. These books will be very beneficial for all children, especially those who are more visual learners.
I Can Do It Myself by Saniyyah Khalilallah teaches young children basic skills allowing them to grow in their independence and confidence. The book covers a variety of skills from personal hygiene to meeting new people to taking a quiet break when needed. The book is full of photos of toddlers completing each task making it easy for your youngster to see how each skill is done. The photos do a great job of representing diversity especially the section on brushing hair. I appreciate that they included photos to show how different types of hair is brushed. Little kids will enjoy learning how to care for themselves and will enjoy the interactive checklist, which allows them to slide each task to completed when they’ve accomplished that goal.
As a new mum I found this novel to be a brilliant book for little toddlers. Of course as an e-book my experience with this novel was limited to what its potentials could be. I found the descriptions and graphics to be very helpful and a good demonstration for small children to consider and to help them learn. It is a very handy and useful way to learn how to do things that isn’t on TV so this is an excellent alternative.
I found this educational book to be excellent as it teaches toddlers how to perform practical life skills for themselves. Another thing to note, there are notes in the book itself for the parents/carers as well.
If you are an educated person in any sense you would appreciate getting ahead of the game as it only helps your child further on with their progress.
My kids are in the stage that they want to do everything themselves, so this is the perfect guide to help teach them certain tasks step by step. Some of these tricks like the coat flip my kids picked up from daycare are really handy for teaching them independence of dressing themselves. Age recommended would be between 2-4. By 5, they can dress themselves but may need supervision brushing teeth to make sure they get them all.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a digital review copy.
This is a super cute small book to help young children around ages 3-6 learn proper techniques on caring for themselves and their space. I wouldn’t recommend it for ages above 6 I like how it’s full of pictures and step by step instructions.
Another wonderful Montessori step by step guide by Saniyyah KhalilAllah. I Did It Myself! sets our young ones up for success by breaking down intimidating jobs into smaller, manageable tasks that can be done independently . It also shows us, as parents, the best way to set up these tasks and how to stand back and let our child learn.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks NetGalley for the preview!
I loved the clear step-by-step directions and photos in this book! I feel like it is a wonderful teaching tool for basic life skills. I could see reading this over and over to help master one skill at a time. The skill chart at the end is a nice touch!
What a fab idea! Young children love to be independent and can often be reluctant to listen when an adult tries to show them. This book is the compromise! You can read it together and go through the steps with clear photos to help. The photos and words were simple and clear. The only one I did think could have been improved was putting on shoes- shown with wellies. I think shoes with Velcro would be better.
Thank you very much @netgalley for the ARC.
I really liked this book, I have two autistic children and little everyday tasks can be challenging.
Using this book we got visual aid to help both children aged 2 and 12 to find different ways to each child to do everyday things
Thank you for helping my family, it will be on my TBR list in December.
This great little book shows children how to complete basic tasks such as brushing their teeth and putting on their socks and shoes, but also talks about etiquette such as sneezing or yawning into your elbow, excusing yourself if you need the bathroom, and meeting new people.
The concept of the book is that once the child has completed the activity they can slide the marker across, and work their way through all the activities. I'm sure this would be lovely, however I had an electronic copy so this didn't translate. So I would definitely advise against this as a Kindle / ereader book as it loses the message, which is why I have reduced to 4 stars.
It did have a parents guide at the back which was really useful in terms of how to encourage children and the Montessori method.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for the ARC!
This book is a practical and fun read with step-by-step photos of simple tasks to teach your toddlers how to start caring for themselves! We have been working on several of these skills with our 2.5-year-old (like washing hands and brushing teeth) and the photos are so helpful to show him the process. This book is a wonderful resource to help parents teach their little ones these skills!
