A fabulous book that shows children ways that they can actually help at home without making it seem tedious or boring. Kids love to help, but often lack the skills and knowledge to do so. The step by step will help adults break it down and teach their kids.
I really enjoyed "I Help At Home!" by Saniyyah Khalilallah. This book is a natural companion to the book, "I Did It Myself!". I appreciate that both books have similar layouts, easy to follow instructions and corresponding photos for children.
This book does feel a little more advanced than the first book and focuses on a lot of cleaning and housework activities for children. There were a lot of activities that involve children filling containers with water independently and carrying them to other containers to dump them in. I've always had trouble trusting my 2 year old to do this, but appreciated the tips and encouragement around it in the book. Like the first book, I also loved the little sliders kids can do when they've mastered an activity.
Overall, this is another thoughtful book in the series that I would recommend to parents with toddlers.
This book had wonderful inscriptions for ways that children can easily help at home. Each instruction had a photo and an easy way to explain the task to a child. The book is also very encouraging and encourages my children to help. It definitely made helping seem very exciting for them.
If you want a book to encourage your toddler/preschooler to be more independent in cleaning tasks in way that benefit them, then this is the book for you! It's a step-by-step guide to better help the child(ren) in your life be more independent in ways that help them learn and boost their self-esteem. with a sliding chart included so that they can "check off" the things they've done and know what they need to do next.
Thank you NetGalley and Storey Publishing for allowing me to receive and review this title!
Look, I'm not going to lie to you - I am not great at being consistent with housework. Laundry, sure. Bathrooms - if they're dirty, it's time to clean them. The kitchen is either clean or an overwhelming mess. I WANT to be better about it, but I'm just not, and my husband is worse, so it's very hard to teach our son how to be consistent when we aren't. This book was very helpful in breaking down the ways that he can help, and in doing so, helped us figure out a method that worked for the entire family. A very helpful book.
This book presents an ideal reference source for parents, guardians, caregivers, teachers, or other adults involved with helping children develop life skills. Colorful pictures along with simple instructions demonstrate how kids can develop independence in helping at home. Topics include cleaning one's room, sweeping floors, doing the dishes, and folding laundry, among other activities. Kids from difference cultures, genders, and races are shown in the photos. The book includes a reference section and advice for adults in using the book, as well as a chart for assessing progress and websites for additional information. The author states their experience with the Montessori methods and the basis and rationale for the activities in the book.

This is such an amazing resource for helping teach your children basic at home skills such as washing, dusting, keeping their bedroom and play areas clean and tidy. The steps are described simply and easily for the child to understand as well as incredibly helpful pictures to show them what it looks like. Visuals are amazing tools for helping children learn. These books are books all parents should have.
I think this is a fantastic book and I will be purchasing it for my library. My friend taught her daughter these very same skills when she was very young. I was amazed at what she was able to teach a young child. My friend would tell me over and over again how people could not get over her daughter's behavior when she was at a restaurant. Servers and patrons would remark how she was more well mannered than some adults! The illustrations teach each skill step-by-step and the author explains how learning them will form the foundation of the literacy and problem solving skills needed in school. They will also form the foundation for other needed life skills. I will buy the author's other book "I did it Myself" sight unseen.
This was a handy little guide of tasks that are broken down for small children to easily start following so that they can prove their independence by helping at home. Pictures were great, short tutorials were effective. The only one I thought was odd was the washboard, I don’t think that’s a common item in most peoples house, but the use of major appliances wasn’t the aim here either. Overall a great little step by step guide to show children how to clean around the house.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital review copy.
A super cute small book for ages 3-8 on how to help around the home. There’s instructions for setting the table, sweeping, washing dishes and much more. I really enjoy that it’s full of pictures and step by step instructions for young children to easily follow.
A bit of a simplistic look at Montessori principles but I think this one will be great to teach parents how to give their children more independence and develop their autonomous skills.
This book is perfect for my 3 year old. Simple yet Montessori minded, the pictures and verb highlighted instructions are to the point. Love the breakdown of tasks that will build confidence and independence. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a simple and easy-to-follow book for kids. While I am not a Montessori parent I appreciate the focus on having kids build their independence by trying skills for themselves. I don't think mine will ever wash clothes with a washboard, but the step-by-step instructions for doing things like washing dishes and sweeping are helpful from a child's perspective. I like that every task has not only the steps broken down but also images of each step so kids can physically see how it's supposed to work.
In the information for parents section, I also appreciate that there are reminders to have a positive attitude ("I'd like to make the house tidy for us") and to be patient when the activity does not go as planned.
The skill chart is a nice tactile and visual bonus to remind kids of what they're capable of doing!
This is a nice book for young children to help to encourage and teach them how to complete household chores. There are even activities to help make some of these tasks a little more fun!
Washing clothes using a washboard was an interesting choice for a chore in 2022, but I felt the rest were appropriate.
There is section in the back labeled “Guidance for Grown-Ups” with tips about building independence and the Montessori philosophy. There is also an “I Did it Skill Chart” where children can slide open the square to show completion.
The photographs were great teaching tools and also represented children of multiple races.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an early e-copy in exchange for an honest review!
Working as a nanny I have always had my charges help things such as setting the table, putting their dishes in the dishwasher/sink, and tidying away their toys at the end of the day. This book provides me with an excellent resource for sharing with my charges the different steps needed to do many more chores around the house in a fun way.
This is a bright and illustrative book that encourages help around the home from your little people. As a previous Montesorri Teacher I have seen some of these in action in the classroom but when it comes to my own children I forgot how easy it can be.
The title introduces basic tasks for toddlers that can easily be completed independently. The language is simple, but written as though the toddler would be reading to themselves rather than an adult reading to the child. Clean your room and "you might even surprise someone in your family." The tone feels off in many places, as though verbal speech from a Montessori teacher didn't transfer well into written instruction. My other complaint is the use of items that most people don't have around their homes any longer, such as a washboard. Overall, the title would be beneficial for parents and educators looking for simple descriptions of how to complete tasks, as well as ideas for how to set up materials for children to be able to succeed in completing tasks independently.
This great little book shows children how to complete basic tasks such as sweeping, dusting, cleaning windows, washing dishes, and doing laundry. However some of the activities involved equipment that is not very common, such as a wood and metal washboard for doing laundry. I think this would have been more useful if it had taught children how to load a washing machine, which is much more practical and realistic.
The concept of the book is that once the child has completed the activity they can slide the marker across, and work their way through all the activities. I'm sure this would be lovely, however I had an electronic copy so this didn't translate. So I would definitely advise against this as a Kindle / ereader book as it loses the message, which is why I have reduced to 4 stars.
It did have a parents guide at the back which was really useful in terms of how to encourage children and the Montessori method.
Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is a Montessori based book with photographed, step-by-step instructions for chores children can do. The photos are really nice and the book is organized and clear. I'm not super familiar with Montessori, but my impression is that one of its tenets must be a focus on child independence. As such, it is lovely.
My criticisms are that a lot of the tools this book tells children to use are not necessarily readily available. For instance, a child-sized mop is used for the mopping page. I don't know where to get a functional, child-sized mop. Children are instructed to use a water spray bottle for cleaning windows. That's cute and child-safe, but is it effective? And the laundry washing page instructed children to use a washboard to hand wash items. Who has one of those? Where do you get one? Why???
I really liked that there is a sliding checklist at the end for kids to check off once they've mastered a task. The step by step photos are very child friendly. I think this book isn't perfect, but would definitely be nice for having around the house for encouraging young children to try learning how to do some of their own chores.
