The Keeper of Stories by Sally Page and narrated by Jessica Whittaker
is a book to treasure it was a beautifully written book that just took my breath away. The characters were believable and it was an emotional ride from start to finish so you will need tissues. However, an imazing book with a beautiful cover. Sally has written from her heart and the narrator Jessica Whittaker was perfect reading this book.
I highly recommend this book.
Big Thank you to HarperCollins UK Audio and One more Chapter for my ARC.
I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook, the narrator did a great job. I don’t think I’ve read a story quite like it and particularly found the storyline of the main character, Janice, ‘collecting’ stories both different and appealing. Her reference to ‘Mrs Yeah-Yeah-Yeah’ made me laugh and I was quickly drawn in. I would recommend this to friends and family.
I really struggled to finish this audiobook. I loved the narrator and she’s one of my favorites but I couldn’t stay interested.
I’m not leaving my review on any sites.
I loved listening to this book. I was sucked in as soon as I started listening. I found I was walking my dog more so I could keep listening. The narrator did a fabulous job and I never tired of listening. The concept of the story keeper was fabulous and I loved eventually hearing Janice's poignant story. It was amazing seeing Janice come into her own throughout the book.
Great book, I loved this read.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me access an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest feedback.
This is a lovely book and I found both engaging and heart warming, a really feel good book and a nice break from some of the harder deeper reads I have been reading, the main character was a little annoying. But this was definitely an emotional heart felt book I would recommend
The Keeper of Stories would be really suited to someone who likes to listen to a chapter at a time, be able to listen to a story then have a break from it.
I like to listen whilst working or walking and it really is not my style.
The main character who is a cleaner has retained stories from clients over the years. Some of the content is little conversations she has heard on transport. lots of mini stories are really not for me, Its a bit gossipy and just not something that's of interest.
The narrator was good, and its well written.
Thank you for this ARC.
Really easy to listen to story a feel good story
Janice is a cleaner and a keeper of stories I liked Janice’s character and the names she gives to her clients like Mrs YeahYeahYeah. & Mr Not now
I loved the swearing dog Decius, which ends up a funny character with all the cursing he does in Janice's head
This is not my usual type of reading and I certainly didn't find it gripping but from a normally psychological thriller reader this was a light hearted story and well worth a listen or read
This book was so much more than I had expected, I absolutely loved it. Janice is a "cleaner" as well as a "Keeper of Stories". Throughout her days, she sees and hears things that allows her to collect stories of other people. There is nothing malicious in this, but along the way she collects stories of humor, guilt, greed, narcissism, illness, love, caring and more. She keeps most of her stories to herself until she meets Mrs B. She is the mother/mother-in-law of another of her customers. She doesn't want to clean for this shrewd, flamboyant woman, until she gets to know her. As Mrs. B shares stories with Janice, Janice shares her story in return. Janice suffers from a lack of confidence. After all, she's 'just a cleaner.' How will finally sharing her story change Janice?
I really connected with Janice. I am an eavesdropper. I listen to conversations in coffee shops, waiting in line and shopping. I will add to what I hear to create a story, although Janice doesn't do this. Besides Janice, there are so many other interesting characters such as a well travelled bus driver who Janice thinks must have been a geography teacher; a shrewd ninety-two year old ex-spy who shares her story and convinces Janice there is much to her, a young boy whose father committed suicide; an actor who becomes her friend and a pedigree fox terrier called Odysseus, Dysseus for short, who swears like a trooper and you will have to read this book to find our more about that. There are also some not so likable characters that you will meet. This story flowed so well, with Janice sharing stories with the listener and eventually with Mrs. B. There are so many great themes in this book such as emotional abuse, developing self-confidence, friendship, caring, relationships, families, guilt, and more. I loved getting to know Janice and definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy women's fiction, up-lit and stories of self-discovery and friendship. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jessica Whittaker. I very much enjoyed her narration of this story, especially as she brought Janice's inner voice to life. I will watch for more books narrated by this talented author.
I loved this book! It was such a delight. Janice is a cleaner, who goes around lots of different houses to clean, and when she does so, she gets to hear lots and lots of stories, which she collects. The characters in the book are many, and they are very interesting indeed. I loved Janice, although her husband was very annoying. I liked the relationship between Janice and Mrs B, and the way Janice came out of her shell and flourished because of it. The audiobook narrator was amazing, and the whole book was really enjoyable!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I found this audiobook disappointing. The narrator sounded far too robotic to enjoy listening to the story. I tried listening multiple times and unfortunately couldn’t listen for longer than 30 minutes.
Such a great read. Really enjoyed it. The characters were so likeable and the author definitely had me enthralled.
Would like to read more by this author.
Janice is a house cleaner and she connects to people through their stories. She collects stories but doesn’t share her own.
There are some eccentric people on her client list and she enjoys collecting their stories. Janice doesn’t share her own story, until Mrs B, a 90 something year old, thinks Janice’s story would be worth telling.
This is a beautiful book that covers a range of stories. Some do cover difficult topics but it’s done carefully. You’re left with a warm feeling of hope for the characters we grow to love throughout the book. There’s also a true story told throughout too.
The audiobook is narrated well.
Took me a while to get into this story and the purpose, however by about 30% point I understood and got through it very quickly. We all have our stories, gossip, memories, anxieties and concerns and the style of the writing teased this out from the characters in the book. I absolutely loved Janice 'I'm only the cleaner' who was the true heroine of the book and had her own journey to follow whilst navigating around her world. Thank you #NetGalley for the audiobook to review.
The Keeper of Stories is a story about stories of hidden secrets, bold lies, double crossings, love and humanity.
Janice and Mrs B. start off as adversaries, when Janice is employed by the elderly Mrs B’s son to clean her house. Mrs B is nobody’s fool and has led an independent life until now.
Janice has her own stories to tell and soon finds out that Mrs B does too and so begins a blossoming friendship, based on empathy and understanding of life’s challenges.
A flowery, feel-good tale at times, with many laugh out loud moments, juxtaposed with tearful renditions of a life ruined by neglect and scorn.
This was a nice enough story, but it never really got going much beyond 'nice enough' for me - I also didn't really get the 'Becky' part - not sure if I might have if I'd read Vanity Fair?
The Geordie accent was also terrible, sorry, really threw me out of the moment it was that bad!
What an amazing story! It took a while to get going - mainly because it has so many characters which I struggled to separate initially. But so cleverly plotted and woven that it is worth even replaying bits as this is as story within a story, or maybe even multilayered. What felt frothy and light had such a sting in its tail that I did not see coming at all!
I loved the characterisation - Janice seems so insipid and a positive shrinking violet/doormat figure that I wanted to applaud when she finally shows her true colours. I thought the wide variation of her client type really brought colour and realism to the story. The names of some of them and their back stories had me cracking up: they seemed so authentic.
Finally, there is her relationship with Decius the dog and Mrs B - heartwarming and comical! Don't miss this read. Hard hitting moments couched between wonderful observations of real life told in entertaining and unique ways.
A wonderful collection of stories gleaned from seemingly ordinary people who have sometimes led extraordinary lives. The most wonderful story of all is that of the story keeper. A really enjoyable read.
Narrator 5 stars
Such a beautiful voice and did an amazing job individualising each character.
Story 4 stars
This story flowed so beautifully. The author did such a great job making the reader feel emotional to each character.. Even the jerks.
First time trying this author. Absolutely buying more from Kindle
This was a sweet and charming read about everyone having a past (their story) and how it has shaped the person they have become today. The book explores relationships, guilt, grief and regrets but also manages to be a heartwarming and uplifting story. I liked the characters particularly Mrs B. That said I never felt gripped or intrigued by the book. I was never desperate to get back to reading it. It was a nice story to pass the time on audible whilst cleaning but I was not invested in the characters or the plot. The style of writing is very similar to her daughter Libby Page and reminded me of Ruth Hogan.
