This is not a book review.

I had the chance to read a sampler courtesy of NetGalley and the publishers.

Now I am not a great believer in tasters. I would never read the prologue or the first couple of chapters to see if it is a book for me.
Truth is I am a great fan of this author ever since I chanced upon his Sean Duffy series. Adrian McKinty is a Northern Irish writer and his crime thrillers reflecting The Troubles had me enthralled in the dark tales of the almost impossible struggle maintain some semblance of law and order.

He has a balanced output and in The Island he has travelled across the world to Australia.
Heather has accompanied her highly thought of surgeon, her husband of some twelve months, to attended an event where he is a keynote speaker. It has turned into a family vacation; his two children from his first marriage joining them on a trip of a lifetime.

Heather’s friend had joked about the terrors of the outback, along with the wildlife intent on killing the unwary foreigner. But nothing could prepare her for the life threatening events that awaits them on a day trip from Melbourne.

I really enjoyed the pace of the book and five chapters in I was totally engrossed by the heart-stopping scenario we are presented with that takes this American family so quickly beyond the rule of law.
I feel like a diner in a posh restaurant with little on my plate but I relished every nuance and morsel of danger and implied isolation. I would like to have stayed for all nine courses but I need to remember the terms of reading just a taster for now.

Without doubt I would love to finish this journey; I need to know what happens to these guys, Heather especially. In a situation of impending peril and potential life ending circumstances it is a hard place to leave this novel unfinished.
This author has so much more to say than the words in his text.
Heather seems resourceful, from her encounters with the locals near Alice Springs she is likeable and engaging with others.

Australia is a great location and as we know from Agatha Christie being stuck on an island can be murder!

This #netgalley sampler of the new Adrian McKinty novel The Island contains its first 60 plus pages. And what a trip it is.

The flash-forward prologue will have you hooked from the start. There’s a stand-off and there’s a machete and then we are thrown into chapter one.

Tom and new wife Heather are in Australia with his two children. Tom’s a surgeon attending an international conference but before his attendance they decide to see a bit of the real Australia.

Obviously unaware of the old adage ‘Stranger Danger’ - before you know it, they’re on a private island in search of some outback wildlife... and it’s there that things take a dramatic turn.

In an instant, everyone’s lives are irrevocably changed (no spoilers) and the heat is on!

Gripping from start to finish and ending on a capital letters UH-OH moment, this leaves you wanting more!

The Island is published on 26th May and I’m ready to visit it now!

Only 91 sleeps...

What a tease, I thought this was the whole book!

This is a chapter sampler.

Excited to read the book in full.

An utterly compelling beginning to the follow up to the bestselling Chain! I loved the scary and possibly gothic feeling! Can’t wait to read this book!

I thought my luck was in when I saw this as a read now.
Sadly, post download, it was revealed to be only a sample rather than the full book. Against my better judgement I did give it a read and, boy do I want to read the rest.
But then I knew I would so I am not sure how much I gained by sampling...
Just need the rest now please... ;)

Chapter Sampler..
Although not mentioned initially on download (now clearly stated by the publisher) this is a chapter sampler of The Island by Adrian McKinty (author of The Chain) and not possible to fully review save to say that it begins with a tantalising predicament which will surely not end well and progresses into the narrative proper from that point. Writing is fluid and draws the reader in to what may well be a high octane suspense.

It wasn’t mentioned that this was a sampler when I downloaded it so I’m feeling somewhat cheated. I don’t like samplers and they’re impossible to review or rate because an opinion based on a mere 60 pages can end up awfully misleading.

To begin with, I found the characters awfully stereotypical and their actions are, quite frankly, despicable. From the “money buys everything” attitude to the hiding of the body that’s mentioned in the book description. I already feel like whatever happens is just what they deserve, even if I think there’s a lot more to Heather than we know so far. I’m definitely interested in finding out more about her background.

The sampler cuts off just when the tension kicks in. Publishers are such giant teases. There’s enough here to be intrigued enough to want to read on. I adore the setting even if some of it is putting me off Australia big time! But there has also already been a lot of repetitiveness. Hopefully that won’t continue in the rest of the book.

Benefit of the doubt and all that so it’s getting my standard 3 star rating for an enjoyable sampler.

I was under the impression I was given access to the entire book, not just a sampler. I never read samplers because I don't like to whet my appetite knowing I will have to wait months before I'm able to continue. That's exactly what happened with The Island: just as it got suspenseful, I had to stop. I could definitely see myself binging this one. I love the Australian setting and I really like Heather and seeing things from her perspective. I do not like her husband, but he has time to redeem himself, or die a painful death, at this point it could go either way. This was certainly a promising start to a book I hope to be continuing soonest.

#TheIskand #NetGalley
Fans of Stephen King will definitely love it.
It's a mind blowing suspense thriller. Well written with good characters. Although saying anything about the story will ruin it. But i can tell you that it's brilliant and go for it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for giving me an advance copy.

It's difficult to write a review of just a few chapters however I am a massive fan of McKinty and from the teaser of this book, it looks like he has another winner on his hands!
