The synopsis for this sounded right up my street, however the author isn’t British and it did show a time or two which was a little disappointing and pulled me out of the story. It was very easy to forget what time period it was set in and I didn’t connect with any of the characters.
If Gail Carriger’s Parasolverse was middle grade, it might look something like this – a sassy heroine with an archaeological bent, a chase that takes us from a London museum to the pyramids, dark magic and a possessed cat! This is a fantastically fun paranormal historical mystery full of Egyptian magic, and I really loved Theodosia’s peppy, capable voice. If you’re a fan of Premeditated Myrtle, I think Theodosia will be right up your street. I’m really looking forward to the TV series of this – it should be great!
Such a delightful read for young readers! Full of twists and whimsy, any young reader with a love for stories of magic and adventure is bound to enjoy this.
A really entertaining, interesting book. It's a great set up for a series to come, and seems the author has done a fair amount of research to make the history seem as accurate as possible. It also weaves in some interesting elements of world history, such as the oncoming great war.
I liked theodosia as a character, she was fun and spunky, without being too out of place within the time period it was set in.
My only gripe is that it seems this series will never be finished. There are 4 books published, the 5th was announced a decade ago, and never appeared. So I kind of wonder why they are republishing when there's no conclusion to the series? It also puts me off reading more of it, as I don't want to get invested only to be left hanging (as this has happened to me before!)
So a good read, very enjoyable, but be aware that the series was never completed.
I really wnjoyed this, it was a quick easy read that had history, adventure, ancient civilisations and fantasy. I would have loved to read this when I was younger and I enjoyed it just as much an adult. A good storyline, well developed characters and well written. I will be recommending.
I had a lot of fun in reading this story and I think it was the book I would have wanted to read at twelve.
It's not a perfect book when it comes to historical details but I don't think I would have cared.
It mixes fantasy, adventure, and ancient Egypt.
Theodosia is an interesting characters and I would like to read other adventures.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
