A brilliant read and one I really enjoyed. The characters are loveable and varied, the plot is one that is engaging and medium paced. I found myself completely drawn into the story and enjoyed the writing style.
Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into this book. It was just lacking something for me and I can't out my finger on it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
I’m not going to give anything away about this book, because it’s one of those that books that I knew nothing about and the magic was in reading it. My first thought and my first note on this book that I wrote was, it’s was boring in places, I think because it wasn’t what I expected, I wondered where this story was going. It’s a different concept for a book, time travelling, making it a grower if a book and a bit of a thinking, a thinker, very thought provoking that will take you beyond the pages of this book. I love that the author presents us with Jessica Bay, on the surface she has everything, a good place to love, a husband, 2 kids and a good job, however as it does with us all, life is taking over, the repetitiveness of life, the stress, the not enough hrs in the day are draining this family. That’s until Jessica is ask to move for her job as a doctor for 6 months, not a small surgery on a small island, an island with a secret only three woman are aware of, a bench that allows you to time travel if you happen to be on this bench at the right time. This book has blown me away, it’s the best book I’ve read this year and I am now left with a huge book hangover and I finished the book 3 days ago! This book is funny, it tackles tough subjects, it will make you reach for the tissues and it will make you get behind the characters because it feels like a family you know. Earlier I said that the main character is Jessica Bay, yet it’s the Bay family that are the main characters, because as a Jessica time travels it’s for her family and the results of the time travelling effect the whole family. This book make me think (and maybe at time over think) which inevitably it will do I would imagine to any reader. It made me think, it set off an internal monologue in my head, back and forth these little conversations with myself, not just about time travel but what actually makes a good book, because even though at first I wasn’t sure about this book, very early in it made me think and that was just while I was reading it. There’s no doubt this book will stay with me because it’s the most thought provoking book I’ve read this year, it’s one I will recommend and it’s one i would love to add to my shelf. All of what I’ve written and what I’ve thought is down to the amazing writing talent of the author, I’ve never read anything by this author before, which will definitely change. This story, everything about this book and the way it’s told pops of the pages, the author as this amazing talent to make the story come alive, even though she’s writing about time something like time travel, which is unimaginable, the characters, the setting, the feeling of this book is relatable, another reason why it was so enjoyable, I wanted with all my heart for there to be a happy ending for the Bay family. Another result of reading this book is that in many respects you will time travel because I started to think about what I would do if I could time travel, I thought about the people I’ve lost who I could go back and have time with. I always say have no regrets and I don’t really however but would I go back and change something if I could. The truth is if by going back changed where I am today then there’s no way I would go back, however if I could go back and just talk to lost loved ones, without changing a thing about today then I would take up that opportunity. So it’s obvious I found this book an utter triumph, an totally unexpected on, it’s ones of those books that the joy in reading it, is unexpected and how’s on you. It has the biggest heart at its centre, full of emotion, sadness, grief, grief that takes over your whole being, it’s about living everyday life, there’s a realness to this life without any bells or whistles, it shows you warts and all, the stress and the struggles and yet it’s shows you those special moments in life, the lightness of life, the moments where you belly laugh as a family and this, all these moments jumps of the pages. This is why it’s relatable because anyone of us could be The Bay Family and we’ve all thought what would we do if we could turn back time. The only negative thing about this book, is that it’s so thought provoking that it was like reading to books in many way, I was actually reading the book but at the same time, I wad time travelling in my head, having conversations in my head with the people I would travel back in time to see. That’s my only criticism. This without a doubt is a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ star read, I’ve not read anything by this author before so this will definitely change and I will be recommending to everyone..One other thing if you are one of those readers (I know I am) that judge books by there covers, this book cover does not do it justice.
Too miserable for me at the moment. I didn’t want to continue after the first couple of chapters so unfortunately unable to review
A weird, yet wonderful book. Lovely characters who are in on the secret and try to keep Jessica out of what she thinks is them having meetings as witches.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.
An enjoyable read and one that no doubt will be on many people’s piles at the beach over the summer, it’s characters are very engaging
Love these stories about fresh starts and making changes and that it’s never too late
Jessica Bay has it all - and it's all too much. Between moody teenagers, a hectic job and a husband who can recall that the last time they slept together was 632 days ago but somehow can't remember to put the bins out, Jess is close to breaking point.
Desperate for change, she moves the family to a tiny island in the English Channel. An island that has a secret: it can take you back in time to relive any day in your past. To have another go at doing it right.
But as Jess becomes dizzy with the fact that she can, she forgets to consider if she should. Because changing even one moment in your past will change your whole future in unknowable ways. How much of her supposedly imperfect life is Jess willing to gamble? And will she realise the risks before she loses everything?
Time traveller books are like buses, you don’t get any for ages then you get two together! This book is the second book in a row that I’ve read which has a “time-traveller” theme. It’s the first book that I’ve read by this author but won’t be the last. The theme was completely unexpected, but I became hooked into the storyline very quickly! Dr Jessica Bay has been asked to relocate to the little Island of Forth, situated in the English Channel near to Guernsey, to replace a retiring GP there. Her family all have their own issues back in London, so they decide to give island life a try. When there, Jessica finds a bench up on top of a cliff which appears to have magical properties. It you are sat on the bench when the sun sets, you can wish yourself away to any other day in your life, perhaps to relive some precious moment or to do things differently so that the day could be a better day!
I loved this book! I didn’t expect it to be like it was, especially as I’d just finished another similar book, but it was such a lovely read! I loved Jessica’s character and could completely connect with her. She’s a busy GP who, thanks to misreading the signs with another GP in the surgery, finds herself contemplating life away from London. I liked her husband, Fergus (or Freddie, which ever you feel happier with!) but initially felt he just wasn’t right for her. Life on the Island seemed surreal – no big shops, no way off the island other than the boat and everyone knows everyone – but it also appeared strangely tempting! You would never think a city family such as the Bays would be able to settle somewhere so quiet and isolated, but I loved how everything seemed to come together as the book moved on.
The story has some great supporting characters, such as Nora, Maggie and Eileen and I don’t think there was any character in the book who I didn’t like. Jessica and Fergus not only provided some great fun moments, making me laugh but also some tender and emotional times which had me on the verge of tears. The “travelling back in time” storyline was written wonderfully, very uncomplicatedly and easy to understand. I loved how you could choose where you wanted to go back to but worried my way through the story that the ‘timey-wimey’ stuff would change things drastically back in Jessica’s present time!!
What would I have done though if I knew that the bench could do that? I honestly don’t know, but I do know that we were treated to a beautifully written story about second chances, regrets and family life. I loved every minute of this book, and thankfully I don’t need time travel to be able to go back and read it all over again! Would recommend!
What an amazingly unique read. This book really sucked me in, it was interesting to see the changes - natural changes- of the Bay family from when we meet them at the start in London to the point Jess discovers the bench on the island. The family had recognised their short comings and were already making positive changes, and wouldn’t we all be tempted to have create the perfect life and family if we had the chance. Seeing Jess go to different times Bly highlighted the changes they had made themselves in order to be a happier family. I loved the premise that even the smallest of changes can have ripple effects. Jess tries to fix herself essentially using the power of hindsight, events can’t be changed but her reaction and response to them can be, and by the end the ripple effects are obvious and she had inadvertently helped a number of other people.
I really enjoyed this and found I couldn’t put it down until I was finished.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book in return for my honest review. Thank you to Charlotte Butterfield and Hodder & Stoughton for giving me the opportunity to read By This Time Tomorrow before its release.
The concept of time travel is an area of fiction that interests me, it never works in quite the same way each time. This book is no exception; time travel being possible through a bench at the top of the hill in the Isle of Forth. While the Isle boasts a population of 680, something magical happens within its streets.
Everything that could go wrong seems to go wrong in Jess’ life; her relationship with her two children is fractured and her marriage has lost all the spark that it once had. After a tragic event when Jess and Fergus were young, the two found themselves worlds apart on an intimate level. After her boss makes a move on her, Jess finds herself with an opportunity to take everyone away from the struggles they have in London.
Though at first everyone appears friendly and welcoming, when it comes to the bench atop the hill it becomes a different story; Nora, Maggie and Eileen are downright possessive and rude, only serving to make Jess more determined to take a seat on that bench, oblivious to the repercussions.
This action alone however will change her life completely.
I loved the angle Butterfield took for this book; even the smallest of changes can make a huge difference and I loved the visual consequences of time travel that we see throughout the book. At the end of By This Time Tomorrow I was left with an overwhelming question; did Jessica do the right thing? Honestly I’m still not sure of my answer to this, but I do know I loved every minute of it!
This book will leave you wondering what you would do if you had the chance to sit on the bench and have the ability to alter your past; would you be able to stop or would you be overwhelmed with the need to make every day perfect.
This was fun, humorous and entertaining. I enjoyed the story and skipped through easily and pretty quickly.
What a beautiful story! I thoroughly enjoyed spending a sunny Saturday losing myself in the world of Jess and the magical bench. A really lovely heart warming, and at times heart breaking story.
Deftly Drawn…
Jessica Bay has it all. Or does she? The reality is that she’s at breaking point. Taking her future into her own hands she does something about it, but is gambling with life really the best way forward? Should she really consider reshaping the past? Cleverly and unusually crafted with a deftly drawn cast, both empathetic and heartwarming.
Would you risk your future to change your past? Thoroughly enjoyed it and it was a lovely way to start the new week! Begs to be read in one sitting… really tugs at your emotions, one minute I was breathless with anticipation, the next I had tears running down my face…
"By This Time Tomorrow" offers a refreshing take on time travel stories, while appealing to readers of women's fiction. This feels like a rather unusual combination of genres, but it works really well. I enjoyed the story very much, and the characters were well-written. I did get teary in some parts, which is something I enjoy very much in fiction. So if you're looking for a heart-wrenching family drama with a spot of time travel, this is the book for you!
This was a quick and easy read that was both heart-warming and heart-wrenching in equal measure. It was well written with a beautiful narrative, a compelling storyline and well developed, relatable and likeable characters. This was such an emotive, evocative and thought provoking read. I would highly recommend it.
Cleaver, throught provoking and really beautiful. This book really made me cry so make sure that you have those tissues to hand. It's really beautiful
By this time tomorrow was recommended to me by a friend - and she was absolutely right - this book was perfect escapism.
Jess is a Dr with teenagers and a husband who can tell you the exact amount of days that has passed since they slept together.
Jess is offered a position as a Dr on a remote island and she grabs the opportunity with both hands, moving her family to a place that holds a magical secret - staring into the sunset, watching the sun go down whilst sitting on a bench has the ability to jump through time.
Jess's adventures are heartwarming, honest and you empathize with her struggles.
This book really does make you reflet on what you could change if you had the ability to time travel.
A lovely, heartwarming read.
