This was an interesting fantasy romance novella between the books in the series I think this adds to the world especially as I have read the other books in the series. I think the characters are very interesting and I would love for more books to be in this series.

I absolutely loved this book! The premise immediately hooked my interest and it was filled with twisty characters and such intense plot! The audio was incredibly well done as well.

This was amazing! it was so good to go back into this world. S.A. Chakraborty is such a talented and brilliant mind, I can't wait to read her next novel. The narrator was great and easy to follow. I strongly recommend this audiobook to all the fans of the trilogy.

If you've read the Daevabad trilogy then you should definitely read these short stories.
I loved being back in the Daevabad world and exploring scenes from before the trilogy, alternative points of view and some scenes from after the finale.
It was just perfect. If only there was more because I would love to keep exploring this world with these characters.
The additional epilogues almost had me tearing up. I really appreciated them.

My thanks to HarperCollins U.K. Audio for a review copy via NetGalley of the unabridged audiobook edition of ‘The River of Silver: Tales from the Daevabad Trilogy’ by S. A. Chakraborty in exchange for an honest review. The audiobook is narrated by Soneela Nankani.

This is a collection of fifteen short stories and scenes from the Daevabad Trilogy. It is therefore intended as complementary to the main novels.

This collection has been initially released as an unabridged audiobook with a print edition scheduled for publication in October. The audiobook is narrated by Soneela Nankani.

S. A. Chakraborty opens with a candid Author’s Note about how she came to write ‘The City of Brass’ and later ‘The Kingdom of Copper’, and ‘The Empire of Gold’. During the pandemic she returned to the familiar world of Daevabad and developed various snippets and deleted scenes more fully.

She introduces each tale including placing it in context to the books of the trilogy and warns whether there are spoilers and for which specific title.

I adored the Daevabad Trilogy and welcomed these tales though after a few years passing my memory wasn’t the sharpest on its characters and events. I definitely am inspired to reread the trilogy accompanied by ‘The River of Silver’ this autumn.

Soneela Nankani had been the narrator for the trilogy and I was pleased that she was again reading ‘The River of Silver’. I have enjoyed her readings of a number of audiobooks. She has narrated close to 300 audiobook titles and has a beautiful melodious voice.

I do wonder if the print edition will contain extra material? The original books helpfully included casts of characters, maps, and a glossary. So perhaps these will be combined and accompanied by a comprehensive timeline? I shall have to wait and see!

I absolutely loved diving back into the City of Brass world. The narrator was great. Definitely getting the physical book when it comes out.

3.5/5 stars

This a collection of short stories from the rich and luscious world of the Daevabad trilogy. Some stories take place years before the trilogy while some after. This was a fun and immersive read, dipping back in one of my favorite fantasy worlds. I appreciated the spoiler warning before each chapter/short story.

I don't want to sound mean, but this book didnt really felt necessary!? I enjoyed it but I felt that it didn't add much to the material of the trilogy. The beginning chapters which focus on characters like Rustom and Menizah were good. But the middle part where we see events of the trilogy felt repetitive, since the trilogy is written in 3rd OV and followed multiple characters. The last few chapters which occur in the future were also good. I wish there were more chapters/stories from the point of view of Hatset and Zainab, who weren't much represented in the trilogy.

Also, I wish they picked a narrator who could properly pronounce the non-English words. People with American or British accents can narrate pretty much any book so it would've been better in this case if they chose someone else.

Overall, an amazing read, though not essential to the world of Daevabad.

Thank you to netgalley and HarperCollins UK audio for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Ahhhh I loved this!

It's definitely not one you could really read without reading the Daevabad series as it's more of a companion book filled with shorter stories, but if you loved that series then it's perfect for you. So much more depth on all of our favourite characters, from all different points within the Daevabad timeline.

I recommend it as an audiobook too as the shorter sections make good moments to pause etc where needed, especially for people like me who take ages to get through audios!

As much as I ADORED that ending, I still ship Nahri and Dara always.

I potentially made the grave mistake of requesting this whilst the series is still sat unopened on my bookshelves.
However, that did not mean I did not get to enjoy or appreciate The River of Silver. I enjoyed the narrative and still felt like I really got to know the characters, which has gotten me excited to revisit them upon reading the trilogy - which is more a prequel to me at this point - and find their stories out, even whilst knowing spoilers which were revealed.
The narrator was also soothing and engaged me into the story, even whilst driving.
Would definitely recommend, especially to those who have read the series already.

Thank you to the publisher for my eaudiobook arc!
I love this series and was so excited to delve back into this world.
I will read whatever Chakraborty writes! Also recommend these books in general as audio. The narration is great and the story really lends itself to allowing yourself to be taken along for the ride so to speak!

can already see you looking at this and going "err... Andrew... you do realise that this is a collection of short stories/extracts that are HUGELY spoilery for the Daevabad Trilogy, right?". And yes, I knew that going in, but there is a logic to my madness.

I have always been curious over this series. You guys rave about this series and I feel that this would be completely up my street. But, I've been a little chicken to try it in case the series didn't live up to the hype so, when I saw the audiobook on NetGalley, I knew I had to try it out and maybe, this would be my In for the series and would help me decided whether I should give this series a try and, if so, whether to read this series or to audiobook it...

This is a collection of short stories taken before, during and after the events of the trilogy, giving voice to characters fans love, hate and some that never got the chance to talk...

Like I said, I have never read this series and I'm using this as a "Tester". And I am very pleased with my reaction. I loved the writing and I loved the world and magic. Plus, there were characters and relationships in here that made me swoon, even though their love story/friendship arc were played out more fully in the novels.

Like I said within the first sentence, this is a collection for the fans. If you haven't read this series and you're planning to, you might want to give this a miss till after you read the trilogy's finale, The Empire of Gold. Mainly because most stories in this collection has some form of spoiler. Now, each story tells you if it has spoilers for one of the books, two or all three so if you have read up to a certain book in the series, you can dip your toe in but I would advise against that in case you accidentally spoiler yourself.

I knew very quickly that I'm going to try and read the first instalment, The City of Brass, and I know my memory is shockingly bad at times, that I feel I will be ok when I finally get round to it (hopefully by the end of the year...), but this is a must for fans of the series.

This collection of shorter tales showcases Chakraborty’s writing chops. It takes more technical skill to craft a successful short story than a novel, because there is less time to pull the reader into your world. And while in a novel-length work, the three pillars of strong storytelling – setting, plot and characterisation – don’t always have to be perfectly balanced, or even fully realised, that isn’t the case when writing shorter fiction.

It doesn’t hurt to have an accomplished narrator, like Soneela Nankani to bring these stories to life. To the extent that I had to make several starts before I could get through the first very emotional story, which had me in bits. Before each story, Nankani announces whereabouts within the trilogy the events take place and whether it provides a spoiler or not. This useful addition makes the collection an ideal companion read alongside the trilogy, providing extra insights into all the main characters who feature, along with interesting backstories that may have been mentioned within the main trilogy, but now are fully fleshed out.

I think that first wrenching story is my favourite – and it also provides a poignant insight into the suffering of a character whose subsequent anger has a profound effect on Daevabad. More than anything, this collection reminded me all over again just how the enmity within the city affects the main characters and what a claustrophobic, hurtful place it has become. Highly recommended for fans of the Daevabad Trilogy – and it is also worth reading alongside the series, if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of immersing yourself in this classy sand and sorcery adventure. While I obtained an audiobook arc of The River of Silver from the publishers via Netgalley, the opinions I have expressed are unbiased and my own.
9/10

Anything Chakraborty writes is an auto-buy and 5 stars from me. I love her work and the world she has built. I particularly liked this audiobook as it was a lot of short stories and it felt I got to immerse myself in the world so much longer!

The narrator was great too - a lovely voice and performance.

Being back in this world was everything. I truly adored everything about The River of Silver. I just wish it was a thousand pages longer. An absolutely stunning companion novella. If you loved the trilogy, definitely check this one out!

If you have read the City of Brass trilogy this is a must read or listen. If you want more insight into the relationships between different characters and how they fell in love it is the perfect book. Each short story is introduced in terms of where it fits between the books and what spoilers it may have.
I have loved returning to Daevabad and learning more.
The narration is good and fits with the other audio books in the trilogy.

The Daevabad trilogy is one of my favorite series so it was so amazing to get to travel back to the magical world Shannon created! I loved getting to hear these little stories about different characters and getting some new insight to their lives we didn’t get in the trilogy! The world building was just as magical as always.. I would read every book Shannon writes in the world of Daevabad and never tire of them!

A River of Silver by S.A. Chakraborty is basically a set of bonus material for her Daevabad trilogy. I call it bonus material rather than a short story collection because it is very much connected to the original trilogy and contains spoilers for the books – which are made clear at the beginning of each story. I really enjoyed diving back into the rich world and learning more about these characters and their backstories. I especially liked the snippet about how Jamshid and Munthadir met and the alternate ending to the series. Just a wonderful, comforting set of stories. I got to listen to these as an audiobook – the collection is released audio-first and then will be published in traditional print format later. And the narrator for the whole collection is just wonderful, I highly recommend listening to these books!

Another masterpiece, S.A. Chakraborty's writing is always evocative and moving. These short stories felt like coming back home, it was such a pleasure to immersed in the world of daevabad again and see sides of characters that we hadn't seen before.
