I thought this would be cute but it wasn't really. At first I thought okay, this guy thinks she is being annoying because she's clearly playing a role to make people like her, and she's overdoing it... but no, he's just like everyone else except he PRETENDS to not like her because... monk rules
while i enjoy the initial idea behind a story between a girl loved by the student body and the recent transfer student who is immune to her charms, the lack of dialogue from meduka and the instant love mona seems to have for him due to the fact he won’t instantly give in to her, grows a bit monotonous after a few chapters. though the addition of other characters brings another voice to the tale, and the likelihood of meduka reneging on becoming a monk for love that seems to be nothing more than skin deep attraction, i don’t see how the story can progress at the current rate for more than another volume before my interest would wane further.
the pacing is quick, with mona seeming to fall in love with meduka within the first chapter.. the adoration the student body has for her also appears to be based on appearances only and her inner dialogue tends to be stoked by how much others adore her rather than how she seems to feel about herself. meduka seems to have a single focus on becoming a monk, which is often impeded by mona’s singular determination to be liked by him. they barely hold a conversation with one another, which only adds another layer of discomfort as there’s no deeper connection found between the two to view them as a viable couple i would want to invest into based on the first volume. hopefully, in future volumes, more is shown of both to change my view!
This manga is so hilariously cute! I honestly didnt know what to expect with the title and general summary but the art style looked super nice so I requested a copy.
I think the story is very clever. I've never read anything like this before so it stands out. I think our MC Mona is so funny and I love how comfortable and confident she is with her looks, even if she is using them against Medaka in hilarious ways. Medaka also made me laugh, his resolve is very powerful and you cant help but feel sorry for him.
All-in-all this is a fun manga with hilarious characters and moments. I'll definitely recommend this and read future volumes!
I am someone who loves to read comics and manga because I like to be able to have a picture of the characters on my head. I've read a lot of them and believe me when I say this is among the best five I've read. It's hilarious and entertaining the way mona tries so hard to make him kuroiwa kun fall for her. And the funny part is that she doesn't think it's working but it actually is.
I love the illustrations and how well drawn they are.
I'll totally recommend this book to all comic book lovers out there.
this was an easy to read manga and the plot was well puteven tho the tropes are overused. it was a good read i read it in 30minitus
I’ve said this once and I’ll say it again big boobs ≠ comedy. I feel like the story wasn’t really the best and I couldn’t find the plot.
Review to come April 14th to blog/goodreads.
I received this book from Netgalley/Publisher in exchange of an honest review.
What do you do when you are the hottest girl in school and have one guy who is just impervious to your charms? You go hunt for him. Apply all the sexy tricks in your books to him... but will it work?
I really had so so much fun to read this one! I absolutely loved the premise and I was curious how this one would go. I mean, it could go two ways. Both I have seen in manga/anime. One way is that she tries and then gives up to make his life miserable... or the other way in which she never gives up and she keeps finding new ways to get him to fall for her. And in this manga it was the latter one! This girl is determined and BOY she is not giving up. Now if only she can realise that she is not doing this for getting that last boy to fall for her and that everyone loves her in school, but that she is actually in love with him and wants to be with him. XD
Mona-chan was just adorable and I loved seeing her try all sorts of things to get Medaka to notice her. From acting like a kitty to showing a bit of skin to just getting him in the nurse office for some alone time. She really tries everything (even some cliché stuff) and I kept looking forward to seeing both of their reactions. Yes. Because Mona has some wonderful reactions... but Medaka has those as well! I loved that she didn't give up and that she kept trying. I also loved seeing her real personality a bit more. And that one isn't bad either! I do have to say that I did feel sorry for her, at the beginning it was mostly a bit of a game to her and while she was hit that he didn't care, it wasn't until later that she almost cried and felt so horrible that he just didn't seem to care. I really wanted to give her a hug and some insight in Medaka's mind. That he didn't mean it in a mean way.
Medaka. I just loved that we got his POV at times too and learned why he was acting the way he did. Apparently his family lives at a shrine and are priests.. and he is also entering that priesthood. So throughout the manga we see him both be happy that Mona has attention for him, but also try to ward off all those worldly desires with prayers and scary faces. I do hope that he is able to choose what he wants or at least is honest with Mona eventually.
I was very worried when a new character was introduced, namely Haruno-san. She is a girl from Medaka and Mona's class and she has a big crush on Mona. Sadly, I have read a few too many manga (and seen a few too many anime) that have these characters and they are often quite yandere. So I was worried that she may act weird when she found out about Mona's crush on Medaka. Thankfully, she is not bad at all. She even dubbed herself the guardian of these two their romance which had me both laughing and delighted. I loved seeing her keep track of our duo, make cute photographs of Mona, and more! She is a really fun character and I am so happy that the author went for the best route possible.
There is a tad of drama at the middle/to the end because Mona thinks that Haruno-san is also after Medaka. I wasn't too big of a fan of that, though I also had quite a few laughs at the wild ideas that Mona had in her head! Not to mention the pouty expressions were brilliant. XD
The last chapter made me smile! And then gasp! NO, you cannot end the volume like that! NO. Just no! I need to know more! Argh! Well, I guess I will have to wait "patiently" for the next volume!
I really liked the art! As I said a few times, the expressions are really top notch, but also other parts are well done!
All in all, if you want a silly manga that has you rooting for two characters to get together be sure to check this one out!
4 stars~
Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha for providing a digital ARC for review! :)
This was a fun manga overall. Mona is the typical popular, preppy girl that everyone at her school adores. She could have any guy she wants.. well, except for Medaka. She just cannot seem to grab his attention. She continuously throws herself at him to no avail. Does she just want to be able to have another guy at her disposal, or is she really falling for him?
Overall a funny and cute anime, would definitely read further volumes of this to see what happens next!
This is hilarious and adorable! It is heavy on some of the weird tropes of her flashing him to get a reaction and weird boundaries, but it's still really adorable in terms of execution. I love how she's so utterly smitten for him, but refuses to admit it because she's so used to being adored, but he always seems to be ignoring her. I also love the reason he's always hiding his attraction with scowls because he's trying to clear his mind in order to follow the precepts of priesthood. Just, overall this was a really cute, fun manga and I cannot wait to see continuation and them both realizing the other has feelings as well.
I've been reading a lot of manga out of my comfort zone lately, and after this, back to my comfort zone I'm retreating. I'm really not sure what the point of this was. Popular pretty girl is annoyed the new kid isn't into her, and goes to great lengths to change that (which mostly involve removing clothing). I guess the point is fan service? Is it even fan service when it's volume 1 and people haven't had a chance to become "fans?"
The art style is really nice it’s just not something I vibe I just didn’t like the drawing of the male lead (ML). Plus the story is a little awkward with a shy ML and a FL kinda throwing herself at him.
When picking a new manga I tend to subject them to a sort of cover test based on poses, clothing options annd emphasis and size of any female characters' chests. This one passed with no problem. The cover is super cute. However it is a bit of a lie because it gives no hint of the antics inside the cover that are clearly aimed at pre-teen boys.
Mona's propensity to flash people and other juveniley smutty nonsense were not communicated by the cover or the blurb, so sadly it falls into the not really for me pile.
This is about Mona and her quest to get Medaka to fall for her. Mona is the most popular and beautiful girl in high school, and it is driving her crazy that she can't get new boy Medaka interested in her. She uses all her charms and every trick in the book to get him to fall in love, all to no effect. In truth Medaka is training to be a monk and all Mona's antics are driving him out of his mind. This was pretty funny, good art, and an interesting premise. I'm interested to see how far they'll go with it.
Personally, I was not a big fan of this manga. I think Mona was going way past Medakas boundaries and was doing way too much (especially in a sexualized sense) to try and win him over. I think if it was less sexualized and more banter-like, I think I would have enjoyed it more.
Thank you Kodansha and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Big thanks to Kodansha comics for the e-ARC of this book. This review is being given honestly and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was super cute and I love the opposites attract we have going on with our MCs. I think this was a great start to a new series and I can’t wait for Volume 2!
Mona, our protagonist, considers herself to be the Queen Bee in her school. She's beautiful, cute, and all of the boys would bend over backwards for her. All of them, except for Medaka Kuroiwa. He's just transferred in and often appears to get annoyed when Mona tries to lay down her signature charm. This just makes Mona even more determined for his attention and hilarity ensues.
I thought that this book was pretty funny, and I think Mona and Medaka experience a good amount of character growth even within the single volume. The first book contains 8 chapters, and each chapter is pretty much a different attempt by Mona to to get Medaka's attention. I think this structure makes the book much easier to get into, rather than dragging the same attempt out for longer than it needs. I would be interested in checking out volume 2 when it is released.
Mona-chan refers to herself as the queen bee of school. When Medaka transfers in she tries everything in her power to make him fall in love with her and her charms. However, as a monks son in training he tries to keep a straight face and ignore her. Overall, I am not sure how long this story will last and how long the two characters can keep up their routine. Unfortunately, I don't believe I will be continuing this series.
High schooler Mona is the cutest girl in her school and is in love with Medaka Kuroiwa, who doesn't seem to return her feelings. This manga is really light hearted and silly with a lot of gratuitous posing on Mona's part. I'm not into that sort of silliness, but if you're looking for a lighthearted and comical read this may be for you.
Thank you Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for the opportunity to read and review this.
This is a hilarious story, set in a high school where Medaka has transferred to. Mona rules the school through her sheer sex appeal but Medaka is the only person impervious to her charms.
While I found Mona, in my opinion, is self-absorbed, she does whatever she can to get Medaka to fall for her, but ultimately finds herself falling for him.
This is a very cute story and I look forward to reading the next volume.
Just a little too sexy for my high school library, but the couple dynamic is hilarious, so I will be keeping up with these two and their hijinks! It was a lot of fun to read.
