My thanks to the Author publisher's and NetGalley for providing me with a Kindle version of this book to read and honestly review.
This is the sixth outing for Freyja and Hulder these are terrific characters a quality double act but the book works as a standalone story. Clever descriptive intelligent imaginative gruesome at times but with plenty of witty humour sometimes laugh out loud. Well written and translated. About half way through the story it seemed all done and dusted, case solved, but several twists and linking to old cases kept the mystery going to the very last page. Engaging and entertaining from first to last page. More please soon.
Completely recommended.
The Fallout is the 6th book in Icelandic thriller writer Yrsa Sigurdardottir's Childrens's House series featuring psychologist Freyja and Detective Hulder.. Now working in the same building as Hulder and his colleagues Freyja feels the need to impress the rest of his team as well as keeping the burgeoning affair they're conducting secret.
When a dismembered and decapitated body is found in the boot of a car DNA is found that shows a link to a case 11 years previously ......to someone that was assumed to be dead all those years ago.
With Freyja struggling to impress Hulder's team, not least his very pregnant and very difficult Boss, she's also accused of a serious breach of regulations and feeling like a fish out of water.
This is quite a complicated story which involves 3 families and events spreading over a decade and at times I struggled to keep up and re-read parts of it to "get it". Probably just me being thick and it does all knit together at the end.
A clever,if convoluted, plot with the various relationships of the cast of characters as an entertaining back-story. This is one to take your time reading as there's quite a lot going on with different characters at the same time and over different time frames. That's far from a bad thing of course and it's a very involving book.
Hulder and Freyja's relationship isn't the only one being kept quiet in this book and a surprise revelation promises interesting times in the next in the series.
Thank you so much for a great read. I will be looking out for future books by this author. Wow!!! Wow!!!! Wow!!! This book is a total page turner and will keep you guessing with every page. I thought I had it figured out and then BAM! The ending floored me... I just loved this book
I would like to thank Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for an advance copy of The Fallout, the sixth novel to feature child psychologist Freyja and detective Huldar, set in Reykjavik.
The discovery of a dismembered corpse in the boot of a badly parked car gives Freyja and Huldar, on their first case together, a link to an eleven year old case, the disappearance of baby Mia.
I enjoyed The Fallout once it warmed up and I could see the links. Initially it didn’t hold my attention as it kept changing point of view to characters who had no immediate relevance to the dismembered and headless body or any apparent links to any other characters. I understand that this scene setting approach is necessary given the multi stranded plot and the number of characters with skin in the game, but I must admit to getting impatient for the links to reveal themselves.
Once the motives and slim links became apparent the plot is a cracker, so clever and so full of misdirection. The motive for the murder is not revealed until the end, but in the meantime it offers so much room for speculation, although mine was all wrong because I obediently followed the author’s handy hints. Nothing is as it seems and nothing is off the table with the final chapter producing some last minute twists that bring the novel to a close with a couple of bombshells. I’m in awe at how well done it is.
I always like spending time with Freyja and Huldar. They are very realistic characters with a little humour to lighten the atmosphere. This is especially needed in this novel as the themes are quite dark (the dismembered corpse is a hint) and yet the emotions behind it all are very understandable, if not the extreme reactions to the situation the characters find themselves in. I would say that the nonsense in the blurb about Freyja’s mistake is massively overplayed and while it has ramifications for her personal life it’s a bit of a nothing burger.
The Fallout is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Yet another brilliant story from Yrsa Sigurdardottir. This is the sixth instalment in the Children's House series and just as good as the previous books. Excellent characters, a dark and twisted tale with a complex plot. What more could you ask for? A highly recommended series.
Another fabulous instalment in the Children’s House series and back with two of my favourite characters Huldar and Freyja what more could you ask for !
The story is a sad one in parts and it really did keep me guessing but most of all I just loved how all the pieces of the mystery came together at the end it was clever and well crafted.
The subject is a dark one but the book also made me laugh many times with the dynamics between the members of the team with the irascible Erla at the forefront she is a brilliant character along side Freyja’s niece the ever scowling Saga !
This was a read I devoured it really did have everything you would in mystery thriller and I look forward to to the next book and catching up with the team once more, many thanks to Yrsa Sigurdardottir I loved the book.
My thanks also to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for honest opinion.
Oh, I'm always intrigued by the several storylines in books by Yrsa Sigurdardottir. And how it all makes sense in the end, despite it being a complicated plot. So with The Fallout readers are in for quite a ride with lots of twists and turns. I'm expecting them to be glued to the page.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.
I really enjoyed this book. It was well written with a dark storyline and well developed characters. It was a gripping read that I couldn't put down, it was disturbing, unpredictable and suspenseful. I loved it.
