I've said it before and I'll say it again: this duology is my favourite of all of Bayron's works so far! I just love the vibes, the Poison Ivy, Little Shop of Horrors kind of vibes mixed in with mythology and I eagerly kept turning the pages waiting to see what happens next! The last book ended on quite the cliffhanger and I couldn't wait to see how everything would play out and come to a conclusion and I'm so pleased to report that I wasn't disappointed!
I really felt for Bri throughout, I don't think anyone could read about the loss she's dealing with and not feel empathy for her! But she was very easy to empathise with and relate to and once again, we have a brilliant cast of secondary characters who are there right alongside her. I love the banter and the snarky remarks, I love the writing and how it evokes certain imagery regarding the plants, not to mention how easy it is to read and the tension running throughout every scene!
I had a few niggles, there were a few parts where the pace seemed to be dragged down a little by a bit too much unnecessary information and I had hoped for a bit more from the romance, but all in all I really enjoyed this and like I said...this is my ultimate favourite of all of Bayron's works!
I adored this follow up to This Poison Heart. Bayron has fast become one of my favourite YA writers, whose work I will always recommend!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bloomsbury Publishing for my arc.
After the dramatic cliffhangers from the end of first book I was desperate to know what Briseis was going to do next.
I absolutely loved her as a character and I also really loved her mum's, and how normal they all felt. I also loved the little found family that Bri gathered around her.
I found the magic system fascinating and loved all of the plant lore and Greek Mythology, especially some of the lesser known ones.
I still think the romance was a bit insta-love-y and i had trouble at times really investing in it.
I really liked both of the characters but i feel like we missed the part where they got to know each other before liking each other. Idk maybe I'm just being cynical.
I really enjoyed the ending and in my mind I like to imagine Bri and her family running their little apothecary in their quaint little town whilst solving mysteries and getting involved with supernatural hijinks. It feels rife for a tv spin off tbh and i for one would absolutely devour a cosy witchy low stakes black girl magic tv show.
CW: grief, death, death of a parent, violence, injury, murder
this is the pacey second book in the duology, and i did something out of the ordinary for me and actually read the two books back-to-back!
the mythology element was highlighted further in this book which i absolutely loved, the story of medea is one i absolutely adore and the way it was introduced meant that readers don't need any previous knowledge on the topic.
bri has to work *fast* to save someone close to her, all while being hunted down herself...
great ya fantasy series!
I do not thin it was my time to read this book: I put it away for now and I will be coming back to this once in the mood for that genre.
I want to start this review with saying that I absolutely loved This Poison Heart, and This Wicked Fire just added to the love. The sequel picks up where This Poison Heart ended, and while the pace is srelatively slow in the first half of the book, it doesn't take away from the development of the characters. I think the events in the first book had a visible impact on Bri, which I would expect, but you don't always get in books. Even though, I wish there was some more support, some more time or help for her to process her grief.
In hte end there were some things that I would have like to know more of, but I'm very happy with how the book ended!
I love greek mythology so I really did enjoy this side of the story because it really did cover mythology, however it felt it lacked something I couldn’t put my finger on from the first book, it just didn’t feel like it had the impact of the first, it’s still a strong read, I just knocked one star off because it wasn’t the 5 star read that the previous was. It’s still an incredible read and I’d recommend this and any Kalynn Bayron book to anyone
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
ADORE this book so much! The Poison Heart was one of my favourite books of last year, Cinderella is Dead was my favourite the year before, and this was JUST what I needed this year!
The ending was AMAZING! I just couldn't get any better, the perfect way to end such a wonderful book. Made me feel so many feelings all at once.
I Can not wait to read what Kalynn does next <3
Just as incredible as book one. The plot, the pace, everything just perfect. I still love the mix of mythology within the text has made me interested in researching more. Again knocked it out of the park
After absolutely falling in love with This Poison Heart I just knew I had to read the sequel. The first book absolutely drew me in and so did the second. I read the first part when it was released and so by the time this one came out I found it a little difficult to remember all of the characters and relationships and was a little confused. Ideally I should have reread the first book again before diving into this one. However, after initially finding it quite hard to personally get into, I reached a point where everything started to click again and that was it, I was hooked.
I really enjoyed the adventure/quest aspect of this book, it was very much a journey. I think it would translate really really well to TV or film as well.
I absolutely adore Briseis with my whole heart. She is absolutely awesome and one of my favourite main characters across all of the books that I’ve read. The LGBTQ+ rep is brilliant and I love reading about Briseis’ family and think wider representation is so so important, and this book just did that without making it a massive “thing” which I thought was absolutely awesome. It just presented it as the normal thing that it is, but with added magic. Also I love the magic system in this world, it’s absolutely cool and I wish I had powers like Bri, how cool would that be!
So after initially finding it quite difficult to get back into the world between the break between each book, I soon overcame this. And overall I really enjoyed it. The first book will always hold a super special place in my heart, and this was a pretty awesome sequel.
While I really enjoyed reading this book, it didn't quite have that special something that the first book did. This Poison Heart is a truly fantastic, magical book that just had something about it that made it SO good. This Wicked Fate is a good, standard YA book - it just felt like something was missing.
Honestly I requested this as a way of holding myself accountable for reading this series. I love the authors work and really want to read this series.
However I still haven't got around to reading it and I don't know when I will!
Sorry!
This was a great follow up to the first book,. It has a unique premise and a relatable main character. This was interesting and engaging and I really enjoyed it
Not as good as book one (which was phenomenal!) but still a solid read. I think I preferred the Atmos/setting of the first book and this one was a lot more fantastical. Definitely on the low end of the four star, mostly because of how much I loved book one. This just didn't have the same magic to it. I think the loss of the contemporary setting was a hindrance here.
This is the sequel to This Poison Heart, which I read earlier in the year and absolutely adored! Thank you to Net Galley and Bloomsbury for the arc copy! I'm sad to say this just didn't do it for me, but read some other reviews to get a more rounded idea - I might be the only one!
I found it hard to get into this one - even though I read book one really recently. Maybe I just have a terrible memory, or maybe too much happened at once? I really struggled just to keep track of who was who and where they were, which was such a disappointment.
I did get into it a further along when they were talking about the 'Mother Heart', as well as Greek references (the three goddesses/fates) but it took a while for them to actually start their journey! Frustrating from my point of view, especially after the first book was so well paced. Nothing happened for a couple of months, which lasted a page in the book (or less) and suddenly LOTS happened, and then there'd be another random time gap. It just didn't flow right for me. Three significant new characters were introduced in 18 pages and I had just about lost it by then.
Overall, kinda disappointed. I LOVED book one but this felt too bitty I think? A lot went on and I feel like it would have been better stretched into a trilogy so all the different themes could be explored.
It wasn’t bad - I just expected A LOT from the first book I guess.
This wicked fate really blew me away and I cannot wait for more from Kalyan Bayron. This book is the perfect ending to the duology, I loved all the Greek mythology twists and how it was weaved into these stories.
Thank you to netgalley and bloomsbury for this e-arc
I had been waiting for this book ever since i finished the first and whilst I enjoyed it...I did feel like this didn't have to be a sequel. I'm not sure if it needed to be it's own book or it could have been a novella or even, increase the size of the first book. I love greek mythology and I love a re-telling and it went HEAVY on the mythology so that is something to keep in mind. So whilst I enjoyed finding out how the story ended, i'm not sure it's as powerful and as epic as the first.
An exciting conclusion to a brilliant duology. Full of Greek mythology, action and brilliant black role models. My only real critique is that the pacing didn't feel right - I was frustrated reading the first book when I didn't realise there would be a sequel, and this second book is far more action-packed than the first. I wonder if they would have been better packaged as one longer book. Still, this has cemented Kaylynn Bayron as one of the most exciting YA authors writing in America nowadays.
This was one of my most anticipated books of the year and I cannot wait for more from Kalyan Bayron. This Wicked Fate was a perfect ending to the duology, I loved how much Greek mythology was brought in but in a whole different way to many of the books out around now,
Wow this book was so good!! I had high expectations following book 1 and genuinely loved every minute.
Briseis has one chance to save her mother but in order to do so she must tackle an impossible task and find the deadly Absyrtus heart.
Unfortunately for Briseis, she is not the only one who wants this heart. Does she have enough strength to do it? Can she save her mother?
This book was action packed and kept me on the edge of my seat! I love Briseis’s character and the development from book 1 was amazing.
Highly recommend this to all fantasy YA lovers.
