Expansive and enveloping, Webb-Campbell's collection asks, "Who am I in relation to the moon?" These poems explore the primordial connections between love, grief, and water, structured within the lunar calendar.
The poetics follow rhythms of the body, the tides, the moon, and long, deep familial relationships that are both personal and ancestral. Originating from Webb-Campbell's deep grief of losing her mother, Lunar Tides charts the arc to finding her again in the waves. Written from a mixed Mi'kmaq/settler perspective, this work also explores the legacies of colonialism, kinship and Indigenous resurgence.
4 stars for this lovely poetry collection~

This was an interesting and reflective collection of poetry that touches on subjects such as love and loss. Many of these shine a light on grief in a way that correlate to the rhythm of the world around us - such as the moon and tides. It almost gives a beautiful air to a difficult subject matter.
I enjoyed reading through this poetry collection and would recommend for a loved one going through a tough time or period of loss or grieving.
Mesmerising with the random layout of poems and injections of quotes, Q&A’s and definitions, this poetry book is as far from traditional poetry as you can get. It has a refreshing breath of unpredictability that intrigues throughout it all. Despite the randomness there is a central focus of grief, scattered with deep personal revelations to make you unite with Shannon’s chaotic mindset after the loss of her mum. The rhythm of linking it to the moon creates a cycle but overall it is a quick yet entertaining read that doesn’t leave typically inspirational poems but those that echo your thoughts more accurately than precisely organised poems.

this poetry book uses a lot of natural imagery, which i did find at times hard to try and figure out what the poet was actually trying to say, but even when i didn't understand what was really going on it was beautiful to read, the writing style and the stories that were told throughout the poems were just beautiful. so many different and difficult topics were discussed, in a way that made them feel natural. i think my favourite poem from this book has got to be Ecology of Being. for anyone that enjoys poetry as almost an escape, i would definitely recommend giving this a read when it gets released!
So many feelings about this book! It was so beautiful, gripping, and lovely. The imagery and storytelling in these poems was so lovely: Shannon Webb-Campbell weaves death, grief, her history, and the world together to create something ephemeral and yet lasting, lovely and yet terrible. "Lavender blooms in our bloodstream," one poem says. I received a free e-arc of this book.
Given my love for both poetry and the moon I thought I would adore this anthology but I ended up feeling a bit unsure about much of the contents. I did appreciate the gorgeous natural imagery and the poet's clear skill. I also understand that this was a very personal collection and so it feels harsh to judge the contents. However, I struggled to relate to much of this and so only ever felt like I was looking on Webb-Campbell's recollections rather than understanding or seeing my own self reflected inside these words.
I really wanted to love this book. I loved the whole concept of it, of examining oneself in relation to the moon and part of the natural cycles of the world. While I think that all the works were well-crafted, they didn't speak to my soul in the way that I need poetry to in order for me to absolutely love it. That said, I did think this book was very well done and I did like it. Definitely a poet to watch!
Interesting and intense. But unfortunately not for me. I didn’t understand this, but that could be me rather than the author. It just felt like random words. But I’m sure they have meaning to others.
Lunar Tides was a lovely collection of poems by an Indigenous poet! The poems have themes around water, childbirth, grief and more. I really connected with the ones about grief. My favorite poem was I Told You I Don't Believe In Soul Mates, "only to find us folded together like pages of a book as if we were bound by something over than life." Something else that was cool was how the sections were broken up by the changing stages of the moon! It really felt like we were following along with the tide. Recommending for any poetry lovers!
Lunar Tides is a book of poetry, with a lot of imagery of moons and mothers. The author uses lots of nature imagery, evoking an ethereal place. I enjoyed some of the poems, but others at times get so bogged down in the metaphysical imagery it's hard to sense what the author is talking about. I would recommend this book to those you like poetry and want a sense of the divine/universal.
