I'd never heard of this author before but as I love fantasy and it sounded interesting I thought I'd give it a go.
I thought it was a good series with a good amount of adventure and the characters felt well-developed.
I enjoyed reading the book and I would definitely recommend it to parents or children.
I'm looking forward to the next one.
A very interesting premis, loved the short chapters - it kept me hooked. The main character was interesting and I loved the way the story unfolded. A fantastic read.
A new magical world and system to sink my teeth into is always a good thing. Add in a mystery and the fact that the magic users are frowned upon and disliked? Sign me up!
This book has a number of platonic m/f relationships. The teenagers even sleep in the same room with no questions asked, just a “better turn around” moment when changing. This was really refreshing to see, as normally there’s small hints of romantic interest which we don’t need in every book.
While it took me a couple of days to properly get into this, in the end it ended up being an enjoyable book and hard to put down for the last few chapters.
Real consequences that you might not expect in a middle grade book were genuine shocks. Can’t wait to find out more about this world.
I love a new and interesting middlegrade setting with an unique magic system. This was something that I got in this book and it did not disappoint at all. It had lovable characters and the villian which helped to develop the magic system for good and bad magic. This was a different type of world as well than i am used to and i hope that there is a chance for future books from this author.
I had such high hopes for this book but sadly it didn't hook me the way I wanted it to. The premise really grabbed me but it just didn't feel very well done to me. Everything kind of felt very rushed and I feel there were parts of the story missing.
I did really enjoy the characters and wish we seen more of Lux and his grandfather together.
Part of me wants to try the sequel but I don't know how soon I'll get to it.
Walker launches you straight into the action with this book and it took me a couple of chapters to really be interested and invested in it. But then events start happening even quicker and I couldn't put it down!
I liked the play on 'Light' and 'Shade' being powers and the inclusion of mythical 'monsters' too. It's fast-paced and fantastical, and finishes with plenty of scope for a sequel! I think this would definitely appeal to middle-grade readers and older - can't wait to see what Lux and Maya get up to next!
**Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read an advanced e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own **
A brilliantly creative fantasy adventure that I never wanted to put down. The concept of light being part of everything and giving powers is really clever. Characters are well-drawn with humour, wit, bravery and empathy. What more could you want?
The first in a series by Dan Walker. This is an enthralling read that really gripped me. A great book for tweens. I love this book, this is the first Dan Walker book that I have read but now I have read this it has made me feel that I have to buy his other books. I really love his style of writing and I especially love the plot of his book. As a person who really loves fantasy-magical books this was my perfect read and anyone else who likes books such as Nevermoor this would be their cup of tea.
Absolutely adorable, and a book I suspect children will especially enjoy. Tropey and fun! Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for a fair review!
I was really excited to read this, I liked the premise, and was really into it at the start. But towards the end I kind of...stopped caring. I feel terrible saying this, but it felt like so many other books of similar genre and ideas. Nothing felt particularly new or original to me. I did like the characters, they were fun and interesting. And I wanted to know more about them, but i just didn't enjoy the story enough to read any more in this series.
This is a very exciting, action packed book. We are introduced to Lux and Maya who from the very first pages are already getting into trouble and Lux first discovers his gift.
From there it’s none stop action, we meet more characters and learn what it really is to be a light hunter…..
Overall a very exciting, fun, enjoyable read.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this copy in exchange for an honest review
We have not read books by this author before but certainly will seek out his other books to read. I enjoyed reading this book just as much as the children. It was exciting and interesting and more than a bit magical.
I really liked the concept of this book.
The adventure was good, really tested your trust with who was good and bad.
The characters were great, the bad guys were really not likeable which is a good sign of creating a baddie!
This is one for the bookshelf.
This was a thrilling read that I think children will love. It was fast paced with a mysterious and adventurous stroykline and well developed characters that were either delciously bad or wonderfully loveable. I couldn't put this down and read it in one sitting, I cannot wait for the next installment
