The Home Detox Method Daniella Chace, MS, CN
The most disturbing horror story I’ve ever read. Toxins, moulds, disturbing chemicals from the industry that no one talks about, From anything from seemingly innocent joss sticks & candles, perfume and makeup, dishwasher tablets, washing machine liquid, leave on body products & car fresheners and on and on. It seems that suspicious or toxic ingredients fill every cupboard, in every room in every home from the basement to the nursery.
Everyone’s health is at risk from contaminates our ancestors never had, or could ever imagine. From cancers, Alzheimer’s, high blood pressure, to lung disorders, mental health issues, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, all inflammation disorders and on and on. Daniella examines the seemingly innocent chemicals sitting in our bathrooms, kitchens & garden sheds. No one has unravelled these secrets before in one book. Daniella has simple and professional solutions and shares her secrets freely.
Simple easy ways to improve day to day living room by room. The author takes on detoxing room by room in your home by providing case studies that are not just helpful in providing recommendation to resolve issues but are written in ways that may help you recognize problems in your own home. The simple/clean recipes and product swaps are good way to start making your home healthier for all your family members including your pets.
This book has some ideas for people new to living on their own or new to the idea of not using a ton of chemical products. Each chapter focuses on a different area of the home, and you are given some ideas both of products to use to clean as well as how to clean. As a late-middle aged person, who already doesn't use harsh chemicals, I found the book to be beautifully photographed but not particularly useful. Some of the products seemed hard to find.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and it was definitely more than what I had expected. I really enjoyed learning about the different toxins that are in everyday products. Not only did this book teach you what's in most common products, but this book gives amazing suggestions that are probably cheaper and obviously are cleaner to use in your household. I think this is such a great book and the cleaner suggested recipes are very easy to create with ingredients everyone probably has in their home.
I've been searching for a book to increase my insight into safe, healthy detoxing. I'm working to reset my system and found this book to be helpful. If you're looking for knowledge to help reset your system and learn safe, effective ways to detox, this book is for you!
I had to stop reading this halfway through when I got to the part about baby monitors and I read a sentence that said "Electronics and their low-EMF emissions are linked to epigenetic changes and cancer". This is an egregious misinterpretation of current research and is a terrible way of taking advantage of parents who are worried about their kids. I have a PhD in physics and I work in radiotherapy where we use ionizing radiation to treat cancer. In case you don't believe me (and honestly, I wouldn't believe a random person on the internet either), I'm going to go ahead and quote from cancer.gov: "No mechanism by which ELF-EMFs or radiofrequency radiation could cause cancer has been identified. Unlike high-energy (ionizing) radiation, EMFs in the non-ionizing part of the electromagnetic spectrum cannot damage DNA or cells directly."
While I think there actually is a lot of reasonable advice in this book, it is also full of anecdata, and the above example makes me question which parts of this are trustworthy and which are not. You just are not going to cure metastatic cancer by changing your mattress. This is taking advantage of people and it's not right.
Thank you to Storey Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to access this free e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I teally enjoyed how actionable this book was. There were convenient lists of ingredients to avoid, where in the house they can be found, and what you can use as a replacement. I think this is a great book for anyone looking for how to have a more chemical free home.
I picked up this book because of the cover and the idea that it would be possible to improve the quality of the environment of my home. A recent news story I read stated plastic particles were being found in human blood samples making me more aware of the issue. [Plastic bits in my blood!!]
What I got was lucid writing in a very attractive format with lots of white space and beautiful photos. The information was laid out in a way that allowed me to understand the need for detoxing my house [Chapter 1], what to buy or make to detox my home [Chapter 2], and THEN how to detox room by room, step by step, one chapter for each room. At the beginning of each of those chapters was a Toxic Ten list beside a photo of that room pointing out each toxic item in there. [Spoiler alert – air fresheners, incense, dryer sheets, memory foam, and aluminum are really bad.]
As I read the first chapter about detoxing, I thought of three women with whom I want to share this book. One is a mother of a toddler who is highly allergic to corn – like Epi pens and hospital trips allergic. Corn products are used everywhere. The next is a 41 year old woman who was diagnosed with secondary Raynaud’s phenomenon as a teenager. She also has to be very careful about what she is exposed to. And finally my next-door neighbor, a 30-something with two little girls under 5. In the summer of 2020 she got COVID-19 and after her stay in the hospital and her quarantine at home, the next week she had a heart attack. Since the heart attack, she returned to the hospital with double pneumonia. She went from being an active, vibrant mother of two very young children to a semi-invalid in a few months. All three of these women need to keep toxins away from their families and themselves. But how do you do that? The Home Detox Method gives people a system in an easy-to-comprehend format.
And if you need more, the last part of the book has an easy-to-read list of the chemical names and properties of the toxins that make up so many items in our houses, a list of resources based in the US, and a well-organized chapter by chapter reference list which is very easy to access.
After finishing the book, I stood in front of my open refrig and realized everything in it was wrapped or packaged in plastic except for 2 bottles of salsa, 3 jars of jam and some fruit. So, I have a long way to go. But I did make a start. I threw out that open box of dryer sheets and my old plastic cutting board. I didn’t buy the air freshener and liquid laundry detergent on my shopping list. I bought wool dryer balls, a bamboo cutting board, eco-friendly power laundry detergent, and a spider plant for my living room. Step by step, I will continue to use the Home Detox Method to make the environment I live in safer for me.
Home Detox Method was a read about how to clean your life & home from toxins. Although insightful, I found this read to often be impractical for all readers. Many readers may not have access to co-ops or the funds to provide a toxin-free life for their family.
I thought there would be more practical advise & applications of products found on shelves, but this book advises to create your own, for all areas of your life, which may not be attainable.
I did learn about a few toxins I have in my life that I might be more knowledgeable about & pay attention to.
While I do not doubt the accuracy of the information provided, it did tend to be repeated.
The format of the book was great, I loved the clean lines & colors & presentation of the book.
Overall, I learned a few things to watch for but probably won't be implementing many changes in my life for now.
Thank you to NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book for an exchange of my honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley, Storey Publishing and Daniella Chace for the ARC of Home Detox.
I have actually read a few books in this genre and can say this is the most well thought out. I absolutely loved how clean the book actually looked while talking about clean products. When I first had kids I dove deep into clean products and have switched over to cleaner brands, but Home Detox made we aware of so many products that might not actually be clean.
My favorite aspect of this book was the simplified structure of each room and how to detoxify it. Now doing all this at once would be daunting, but its similar to The Art of Tidying Up in which maybe you don't have to do the entire house at once (just take it room by room). It is actually insane to me how many ingredients, chemicals and dyes are found in everything we use and many things we eat. We have such a lack of knowledge because you would think of something is being cleared by the FDA than it should be safe... wrong. I have learned a few additional tips from this book. The end with all the abbreviations is really great as well.
One thing I would think that would be helpful is maybe a cheat sheet chapter at the end so one using the book could easily find a solution they want to make in the correct space (ie the bathroom tile etc). Overall I really enjoyed this book and if I saw this in a store I would purchase even just because of its curbside appeal. I applaud Daniella Chace for educating us on the possible side effects to using unsafe chemicals found through out our home.
I was really excited to get this book as I try to use as many environmentally friendly cleaning products as I can around the home and I thought this may give me more(it did have quite a few) but unfortunately, this really wasn't my cup of tea. Whilst it was informative and I was willing to give the detoxing a go, it felt like she was just saying you have to get rid of anything nice, like scented candles, etc.
This is a gorgeous book! Seriously, it just looks clean. When I was scrolling through the pages, it reminded me of how good organic feels.
There are a lot of household basics in here so it would be a great gift for someone new to an organic or "back to the earth" lifestyle. I would appreciate it just as a reference tool. I am sure the hardcopy would also be a beautiful addition to a home library.
What I especially liked were the recipes. There are even recipes for making your own deodorant, toothpaste, and mouth rinse. Sometimes the homemade products don't end up costing substantially less, but you don't have 50 weird chemicals swishing around in your mouth either. One of the keys tonatural living is being in unison with your body and its chemical balance.
There are also some fun facts. I had not even considered that Castille soap originated from that region in Spain. I just figured it was a certain "type" of soap-like bar soap or had special ingredients in it. In our fast-paced culture, it is not difficult to go into "auto-mode" and not even think about the products or food we buy.
Home Detox is a beautiful reminder to slow-down, look around, and remember that you are a product of your environment.
What a magnificent read about all the toxins we use and have at home, and the alternatives. I am already leaving a fairly toxin free life, so most of this was not news to me, but I learned a couple of new tricks. However, I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in this subject, but might not yet have adopted a toxin-free life. I like the layout, pictures, and the great structure of the book!
Wow, this was very insightful. I loved how they explained step by step EVERY area of your house and how to achieve a good detox cleanse in those areas. I also enjoyed that they have recipes for chemical free cleaning agents. Plus, the added bonuses of eco-friendly ways to detoxify your home like what brooms/dust pans and even brushes are better for you and the environment. This was REALLY helpful as I'm on the journey to become more sustainable and eco-friendly. I truly appreciated the tips and in depth explanations in this book!
I was given this book by NetGalley and the publishers to read and review. All statements above are my own opinion after fully reading this book.
I loved, loved, loved Home Detox by Daniella Chace. Frist of all it's such a needed book. We all need to make more conscious choices than we truly do and when we bring things into our home, our sanctuary what we do bring is vitally important to our health. We just truly need to realize that. My doctor told me a long time ago when my endocrine system blew out and she examined everything she told me she does not even have a gas stove in her home because of health. Also, memory foam or any foam on her bed especially because our faces are against that chemically-laden man-made product hours a day. It made me exam everything and she gave me a pamphlet to read about what is the most toxic and where to start. First, were the pillows, mattress, bedroom then kitchen. What I love about Danella's book is the format is let's talk about every room in our houses and she gives a chapter to each room. What are usually the most toxic culprits and what can they be replaced with.
The first chapter, Our Home and Our Health, then The Home Detox Method, Kitchen, Bathroom, Bedroom, Living Room, Laundry, Kids Rooms, Home Office, Yard and Garden and Garage and Basement. Then Lab Tests and Home Test Kits for Toxins and further reading. This book is well done, could not be more user-friendly than it already is and wonderful, beautiful, useful photos.
I try to live in this way but Daniella made me dig deeper and get a wonderful grip on where I could improve further. Such as she educated me about EMF's and I got the meter she suggested. She addresses the memory foam problem and obesogens. We had our water tested before this book and have always had a Reverse Osmosis System. Glad we've had one as we had our water tested and have a well and live in an ag community and our water was off the charts with nitrates from fetilizers around our area, even though we do not as an organic farm. Anyway, we are now order the kit for home air tests. The kit for testing your plates. It's time to be conscious about what we bring into our home and release there are off gasses. Also, some of us are more effected by toxins than others but we do have to be mindful. Excellent book, beyond excellent.
I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher Storey Publishing for the opportunity to read and review Home Detox by Daniella Chace.
4.5 stars
Like most of the other reviewers, I enjoyed this book. This isn't a book I'd normally choose to review but I'm glad that I did. I love the layout and photography in the book but most importantly, love the author's knowledge regarding the various toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis and some very easy ways to reduce them, including what products to use in place. She even throws in some easy recipes to make.
This is such a thorough guide. I love the list of ingredients (and abbreviations) to watch for, in addition to the different manufacturers. I also love the suggested products and recipes to make my own cleaning products. I highly recommend this book.
This is a very helpful guide that takes you room by room explaining the biggest health hazards in each room and healthy alternatives to still have a beautiful, clean, comfortable home. Chace gives recipes for simple cleaners but she also goes much further with lists of the top ten pollutants in each room and what to do instead. For instance, I didn't realize memory foam pillows and mattresses offgased so much unhealthy stuff, and she doesn't just tell you what they contain and how it affects you but also gives a wide range of safer materials. In some cases it could use a little more, like the baby room section says disposable diapers are linked to all kinds of health issues and she says to just use a diaper service instead. There are no diaper services where I live and I used cloth diapers happily with some of my kids. There are more options besides disposables and a service. Still, it's a very comprehensive resource with lots of color photos and it leaves the reader empowered and educated rather than overwhelmed.
I read a digital ARC of this book for review.
An informative, totally transfixing, and thoroughly researched book.
For someone like myself who suffers from a very debilitating illness, every little non-toxic addition to, and toxic subtraction from, my home helps. You will be shocked at the amount of harmful chemicals in your living, eating and sleeping areas. Even if you have read other books of this ilk and you think you have a good awareness of the subject, trust me, you'll learn one or even a couple of dozen new tips in this work.
Daniella Chace's day job is to help others with removing toxins from their house, thus making significant improvements in their health. The book is structured on a room-to-room basis, so whichever place you wish to start with, it's all laid out for you. If you don't understand what the initials mean on your current household cleaners, there's a handy listing for you to follow. The fact that the author provides a whole list of non-toxic and chemical-free alternatives, including homemade cleaners, make this book worth its weight in gold. An excellent piece of non-fiction.
I chose to read an ARC copy of this work, which I then voluntarily and honestly reviewed. All opinions are my own. My thanks to NetGalley, the publishers, and the author.
I really enjoyed this book. The author went room by room, identifying toxins, and then gave examples of how to replace them or clean them, Also all the toxic products we use on our bodies, which was eye-opening! There were recipes for replacing your chemical cleaners with natural ones. Lovely pictures as well.
Thank you #netgalley for the ARC!
