Thank you Publisher and Netgalley for the sampler!
I was initially drawn in by the blurb of this book, the kind of story I would normally gravitate to!
This sampler had me hooked. I already adore Carole Hailey's writing style and even reading this first small section, I can tell it will be a strong read for me! Cannot wait until next year when this is out, will be picking this up on the release date!!
I really enjoyed this sampler. This was the perfect teaser for this book as it offered the right amount of intrigue and character. The tone in this was done well and i'm looking forward to seeing what the full book is like.
it is only a short sample but my god the beginning of the book packs a punch. I am hooked and cannot wait to read the full book.
Wow, what a start to a book!
The sampler only covers a few chapters which include a brief overview of our main character's mother's cult and going back to where it all started on her daughter's 13th birthday. By the time I finished this sampler I was hooked!
I love the way the book (so far) has been set out; with the footnotes, the publishers notes, references to specific diaries entries from her mother's notebooks, and the foreword by our main character which made it all seem believable and an actual historical event she's recounting.
I'll be keeping an eye out for the finished novel as I NEED to know what happens next.
I cannot wait to read this book.
I was hooked from the beginning of this sample. I need to know about The Event. What made her mother take a vow of silence? What do the notebooks contain? Why did Emilias mum set herself on fire. So many unanswered wuestions from this sample.
The writing style is fast paced and easy to read. Has a very contemporary style.
This book needs to be realised ASAP. I will certainly be reading
In this prologue and first chapter, Emilia recalls the day her mother set herself on fire in public (known as The Event). She also tells us about her 13th birthday party, eight years before, which was the last day she heard her mother's voice. Why did Rachel go silent? What is The Community? What led to The Event? Who was Rachel of Chalkham?
So many questions! February 2023 suddenly feels so far away!
I think the opening pages of this novel are some of the most compelling I've ever read - February 2023 can't come soon enough. Hailey writes with such a matter-of-fact tone, which I adore, which makes sense with the real-life style of this account. Emilia's memories are tinged with foreboding that gave me the shivers, and I have no idea what is going to happen next which is always an exciting way to feel when reading a sampler!
I am remarkably curious about The Silence Project now, and can't wait to read more.
Okay I sped through this, not just because it was short (it ís a sampler), but because it was SO good! The opening paragraph, are you kidding me?? I would LOVE to read the entire book as I'm sure it'll be just as good and I'm already hooked. I need to know how it ends.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me access to this text in exchange for an honest review.
The premise of this book sounded so intriguing to me and from the first page, I was hooked. Suspense, dread, and mystery - it may have only been an sample to which I had access, but it was pretty solid. Can’t wait to pick this full text up, and I can guarantee that I won’t be able to put it down!
Enjoyable sampler but needed more….guess I’ll have to wait for the whole story. It’s on my radar but great opener.
I enjoyed reading A SAMPLE of this work as it is very well set out and felt as though it was being written by a real person. A book within a book, kind of atmospheric with a side helping of suspense.
The sample was short, and cut off just as things were getting interesting, however it conveyed enough interest that I would like to read the whole book if I was offered it.
Whatever made Emilia's mother, Rachel, take a vow of silence must've been enormous. Why choose to start it on Emilia's thirteenth birthday? Was it something to do with her? After eight silent years, why did Rachel set herself on fire? Lots of questions floating about in my head that I need answers to. I look forward to reading the finished work.
I chose a sample of this book which I voluntarily and honestly read and reviewed. All opinions are my own. My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley. (I will update as and when I am able to read the whole book.)
Emilia Morris's mother first moves into a tent in the garden and takes a vow of silence and then builds her own community with women who also want to join in her vow of silence. Eight years later Rachel sets herself on fire and
Although this as only a few pages I was absolutely gripped; I am fascinated by cults and the psychology that surrounds them and this start to the novel had me intrigued and I can't wait to red the complete novel.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a sample of the novel in exchange for an honest review
This sampler was stunning - I raced through it so fast I almost forgot that it wasn't the full novel. The style of the prose is beautiful and the suspense was built within a few pages. I can't wait for the real thing!
Very intrigued I enjoyed the sample which was an easy fun read but can’t decide where it’s heading woukd love to read the full book
Emilia is breaking her silence, writing memoirs based on the notebooks her Mother left behind after she burned herself to death along with thousands of her followers. She calls this memoir 'The Silence Project'. She hadn't heard her mother speak since she was thirteen, not even in those final painful moments, but she's determined to finally speak out and hope everyone will finally listen about just how twisted and sinister The Community her Mother created has become.
I can't wait to read more of this - from the start it was a compulsive read with a kind of quiet terror. The kind where what isn't being said is more frightening than anything on the page. This is a book to make you think about the lines between hero and villain, right and wrong, anarchist and troublemaker - and mostly about the truth of the human condition. The characters were set from the start, even in the few pages I've read I feel that I know them and where they came from, and I can't wait to know more.
Absolutely hooked! devastated this is only a sampler as I CANNOT WAIT to read the full text. Definitely one to look out for!
This excerpt was so good! I am absolutely already captivated by this story and I can't wait for more! I'm so excited for this book's release!
What a great prologue and first chapter - I can’t wait to read the full book and to find out what drove Rachel of Chalkham to a life of silence on her daughters 13th birthday.
Just a shame it isn’t coming out until 2o23!!
I hadn't realised when I requested The Silence Project that it was just a preview and I was a bit confused as to why it was so short and felt incomplete! It's an interesting taster but not quite enough to give you a proper feel of the book.
So… who has a time machine so I can get to 2023 sooner?
I loved this preview, such a fantastic start to a book, I’m hooked already and need to see more of Rachel’s life whilst being silent.
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for a preview.
